He-Man Movie Update

Sony Vice President DeVon Franklin reveals that plans for a Masters Of The Universe movie are still very much on, and says they should have the script "very soon"..

This one has been on again off again more times than I can count, but there hasn't been any word it since a last April when we heard Alex Litvak and Michael Finch were brought on to pen the script. Now, while talking to Crosswalk.com Sony vice pres DeVon Franlin offers the following update..

"One of other things I'm really excited about is we're doing a reboot of the 1980s franchise Masters of the Universe. The He-Man franchise. Very excited about that. Should have that script very soon. I'm praying that we can start figuring out how we're going to make it."

Of course, we have seen He-Man on the big screen before when Dolph Lundgren brought him to "life" in the ridiculous 80's flick. The last we heard, the direction that this movie was going to take saw the concept "re-worked" and was going to be about a soldier named Adam that stumbles into (Narnia style i would assume) the magical world of Eternia were the evil Skeletor is trying to eradicate all magic. Now I have no idea if that will still be the premise now that new screen writers have been brought on. I certainly hope not anyway.

I HAVE THE POWEEEEEEEEERRRR!!!

Am I really the only one who liked the 80 Lundgren He-Man? Classic!!!

Although I haven't seen it since I was a kid so that might have something to do with it.

They should not [frick] with the story! G.I. Joe movie sucked because of that!
Just make it look cool and give it some realistic gritty feel then it will be great!:)... And please for the love of god dont [frick]ing cast someone like Channing Tatum in the leading role!
Armie Hammer or Daniel Cudmore (if he can act) would be cool!

Tarsem Singh, Zack Snyder, Neill Blomkamp or Jaume Collet-Serra as the director

Nomis@ I know they just don't understand! And I completely agree with your assessment. It is a classic because it's a ridiculous 80's Flick!!!

If dem movie writers and directors are so smart and special and prone to give their vision, why don´t they create something new, from scratch??

MarkCassidy - 6/29/2011, 6:45 AM
Sorry Nomis, I really didn't and still don't have any affection for that [frick]ing abomination. I was the biggest He-Man fan ever when I was a kid. I was 7 when it came out and even then I thought it was a pile of shit.

There's great potential in this. They very much could make He-Man into something worth seeing, but that would depend entirely on how much distance they can put between the new stuff and the 80's stuff

I think if it is shot the same way 300 was then it could be epic.

I'd much rather them make a really good CGI Masters film.

The original movie wasn't all that bad. It was a lot more like the comics series than the Animated series. You can read all of them for free here http://old.he-man.org/primary_sects/comics/html/mini_comics/motu/index.shtml

Hmmm...Interesting..I didn't know this movie was alive. I don't have a good feeling about this. Between cartoons and CBM movies, these clown producers, writers can't seem to get it right and the damn script is right in front of the, I.e. the source material. I'm expecting them to F this up.

Well I read a review of the script by Justin Marks and it was awesome. Dark, fantasy/sci-fi blend with lts of action.

Adam a soldier? That already sets it up for failure. He's supposed to be the prince of greyskull. Ugh. Smh. Hope they are faithful to the source material

Last i heard (from latino review) they had scratched the idea of Adam being a soldier from Earth and rethaught the entire story to make it ALL based on Eternia, with Adam being a young prince and fleeing an attack on his kingdom where his father dies. He then embarks on a journey to retake it and finds this mystical sword etc, etc.

Brashlight- No you are definitely not alone! In fact, i say that anyone that can enjoy Stallone's Judge Dredd, actually CAN very much so enjoy Lundgren's Masters of the Universe. The acting was very decent in fact it probably was Frank Langela's best ever performance which i feel even eclipsed any and all James Earl Jones performance as well as many other talented actors. The story was what it was which might not have been as entertaining as the cartoons but was still very good for a film shown to the average joes. The soundtrack was just as EPIC as Superman's or Star Wars. The effects could have been better but weren't too cringy in my opinion. Even the dialog is passable, all but for one MASSIVELY cringe inducing line given by He-Man himself as he's captured and taken away by Skeletor, he says "I don't want inocent people to die!" in the most ridiculously fake way possible. Aside from that everything was very enjoyable and still is to this day since i watch it with my kids.

Sweet! Michael Bay should direct (before you kill me think - there is really no complex plot here, so epic battles would be nice, instead of laser blast fights in a guitar store).

They should start the film with a LOTR style prologue with King Greyskull from the more recent show and also use the set up showing Keldor becoming Skeletor. Then do He-Man's origin.

marvelguy - 6/29/2011, 8:19 AM
Now we finally have the technology to do it justice! The best part of "Masters of the Universe" was the rendering of Skeletor. They definitely need to keep it on Eternia and he has to have Battlecat. Obviously, with "Conan" coming out, the differences must be stressed: technology plus magic, Battlecat, Panthor, the king and queen, the connection between Man-at-Arms-Teela-Sorceress.

Good script, good CGI, and a good He-Man would definitely command a trilogy!

I loved the lungren he-man movie as a cult classic. Lungren was so bad ass, he looked like what he-man would look like in real life. But for some reason the director/story/writer's could'nt make i all come together.I think the remake will be like the new conan movie it may look good from a distance but i dont think it will live up to the classic's.

Can we possibly get a moral at the end of the movie just like the at the end of every 80s cartoon?! I would love that. :)
