When details of an all-female Ghostbusters film started circulating, one of the names in most minds was Emma Stone, who recently played Gwen Stacy in the Amazing Spider-Man films and garnered an Academy Award nomination for her role in Birdman. Though there was heavy interest from Sony, she eventually decided to decline joining the new take on the franchise.
"The script was really funny," she told the Wall Street Journal, however, "it just didn't feel like the right time for me. A franchise is a big commitment — it's a whole thing. I think maybe I need a minute before I dive back into that water." Sounds like her Gwen Stacy days were rather draining, though the actress does admit that she'd love to do let lose and play a "crazy or dangerous" character, perhaps even a villain, at some point. "That would be amazing," she says. "I would love that."
