IRON MAN 3: Designs For Mandarin's Rings & Pepper Potts' Shrapnel Necklace

People have been coming out in droves to see Marvel's latest film, Iron Man 3. But, the film's success at the box office doesn't mean all is well. Moviegoers have been divided upon the film's big twist, which is Ben Kingsley's Mandarin isn't really the Mandarin. But in fact Trevor Slattery, a drunken British actor hired by Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) to give Evil a face. So, those rings that Trevor/Mandarin wears, are purely decorative.

With that out of the way, let's appreciate some wonderfully beautiful and intricate designs for The Mandarin's rings, that were created by Andrea Dopaso.

Near the end of Iron Man 3, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) has the shrapnel surgically removed from his chest. Then the film cuts away to a scene of Tony placing a necklace, with a heart-shaped pendant, around Pepper Potts' neck. That piece of jewelry is actually supposed to be made from Tony's shrapnel fragments that had been recently extracted. Sadly, none of Andrea's lovely designs below were used in the film.

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3″ pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Iron Man 3 was directed by Shane Black, and will hit theaters May 3, 2013! The film stars: Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Gwyneth Paltrow (Virginia Potts), Don Cheadle (Col. James Rhodes), and Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin.

I wonder if Sideshow will sell prop-replicas of the Mandarin rings

Why would they design those rings only for them to be shown for a couple seconds and have no purpose in the movie at all?

Those rings are awesome too bad they were just props like the Mandarin!!!!

i really wish they had done something etter with the mandarin, loved the film but reli do think it was a waste of a great character who could have been a real threat to ironman and fed his alien tech obsession/phobia through actual power rings

Whats the point of designing the 'rings' in this film if they dont serve any purpose...

What's the point of designing anything for films? Why design a costume that'll be seen for two seconds, and blurred because they're moving too fast? Or a ship? Or anything? Why did the designers and builders on Lord of the Rings create EVERY single piece of furniture, cuttlery, or dishes seen (or hardly at all seen) in the films?

@ raccoonwithrockets

I agree with you 100%, it was a way to trick us. Anyways some fansboys are alluding that the fake Mandarin got plastic surgery etc... to look like the real Mandarin.

That is just silly because no one knew who the Mandarin was or who he looked like! Such silliness if you ask me.

I love the sour grapes excuse for the raped Mandarin. "Mandarin was a shit character to begin with". They fail to realize that if the Mandarin, barely arguable as Starks arch nemesis, is shit, then Iron Man doesn't have any [frick]ing villains which is actually an inadvertent insult. In other words, it's a stupid defense to an obvious debacle.

I didn't mind too much about the twist...but this makes me go like: "Why even bother?"
Any way...still an awesome movie.
Haters can suck it.

Why did the fake Mandarin even need rings? Oh yea to fake out the fans of the comics. I forgot. The Directer & writer are so clever!

They could have tied the mandarins origin story and motives from the first film.. and those rings were actually given to him somehow from an alien or good or share asgardian civilisation Imean Damn they just fought a God And aliens in the last movie....

@ MrMartinMarvel

Yes why have the rings? Why sell us a Mandarin that never existed....

I know when I saw the trailer and saw those rings I was like that is the freakin Mandarin. And even if those rings did not have any alien technology behind them it was the essence of the Mandarin, and all we got was some drugged up stage actor.

That is my opinion, just like how I was little disappointed in Bane and how his mask only had pain killers no venom but in the end we did get a Bane so better than nothing.

I like the idea of the shrapnel being part of the necklace, but there is way too much shrapnel on those designs.

And the fake-out you guys speak of is that George Lucas-style fan contempt. Why emphasize the rings when the general public knows NOTHING about what they are or should be. It's strictly for the fans- people who are familiar with the character to recognize. While the general audience is none the wiser and having fun, Shane Black is tapping fans on the back and whispering into their ears....

[frick] you.

@ MrMartinMarvel

True if he was a real Mandarin and he did not have the rings some people if not most fans would be bugged! But I would have been more happy having a real Mandarin with no rings then a fake Mandarin with rings.

Dang when you say that out loud it just sounds silly!

And I am sure DC trolls and Marvel fans laugh at people who are blind on how average the movie was!

The rings are there because the name of the terrorists was the Ten Rings.

I know it's complicated
