SCOOPS: Is This The Leaked Script For The Judge Dredd Reboot?

Now that Karl Urban has confirmed that he’ll be playing Judge Dredd, and with filming on the 3D reboot scheduled to start this Fall, we can expect more casting news and information about the movie to be released in the next few months. However, thanks to an anonymous email, it would appear that CBM has gotten it’s hands on an even bigger scoop, as we’ve been sent what appears to be Alex Garland’s script for Judge Dredd.

Interestingly, the title on the first page is “Peach Trees” which could perhaps be a code name in a similar style to how Captain America: The First Avenger is being referred to as “Frostbite”.

Download the script to see and read it for yourself by clicking HERE.

Before you cry “FAKE” though, I’ve read a good chunk of the script today and both the layout and story are a lot better than your average piece of fan fiction. (although to be fair, many of you regular CBM contributors post stories that are easily better than a lot of what Hollywood produces!) The script also appears to have been scanned rather than just typed up and posted online, while we were assured that is in fact genuine. Also, a fair bit of what I’ve so far read does corroborate what Urban has said about the tone and story.

Regardless of the quality though, there is of course no way to know whether it’s the real deal which is why it’s up to you guys to decide! Just use the “Like” or “Dislike” buttons below to confirm or debunk this news!

HEY JOSH! I'm creating a petition and I want to know some tips on how to make it. Like, who should the "target" (who it will go to) be and what should the signature goal be? 1000 or 5000 or 10,000?

I have the screenplay. Here is the link.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=THVZVTPH

It's 100 percent real. PDF file - opens with Adobe Reader.

I think it's crappy - just a Die Hard rip off set in a MC-1 block. I've posted a review on the IMDB Dredd 2012 board. Here is the link:

Just to add to my previous post...I have the screenplay. Here is the link.

--------------------------------------------------------------

If you can't view that, here is my review with spoilers removed:

Long term Dredd fan. Having read the entire screenplay, here's my verdict with spoilers taken out. My original review had a few spoilers to help illustrate my points but I've removed them.

Lame Die Hard copy set in Dredd's world.

No imagination, no satire, no invention, cliche villains, just Die Hard in a block. It really is Die Hard in a block.

The outline suggested Dredd and Anderson have to escape with the perp but that's not the case. Kay, their perp, is just some gang member of little importance.

Mega-City 1 is portrayed as poverty-stricken. Peach Tree Block (not the greatest name for a block) is a slum. The overall feeling you get is Mega-City 1 is a bit of a dump. Garland's screenplay does not paint a high tech view of the future. This a grimy, dirty vision of MC-1.

Ma-Ma (worst villain name ever) isn't a great foe. Perhaps she'll be intimidating on screen but as a villain on paper she's kind of naff. A woman is hardly going to be much of a challenge for the ultra tough Judge Dredd! I'd rate her 2 out of 10 on the villain scale.

Dredd's character seems fairly consistent with Wagner's. He's taciturn, stoical, a man of action. The characterization is good.

Anderson's characterization is good too. She's fairly sensitive, a sharp contrast to Dredd's taciturn 'little emotion shown' character. There's some backstory about her parents. The Psi angle is used a bit, not to a huge extent. She comes over as physically tough which is consistent with how she's portrayed in the comic. The rookie subplot is okay. It works within the context of the larger storyline.

Garland has got the basics of Justice Dept right. A few changes here and there, such as 'responders' but overall it feels close to the comic version.

The Chief Judge appears. His/her actual name is not mentioned.

The perps are your standard type - seen in a million other action films. They're dumb, foul mouthed and can't aim straight! Nothing new there.

There's no satire, no poking fun at culture, at people.

There's no Wagner type ironic humour. The humour comes from the exchanges between the characters. Little of it seems to come from the situations. There's not much humour in the screenplay - period. It's done in a serious way.

The dialogue is peppered with "[frick]!" and "mother[frick]er!" No "drokks" - "gruds" or "stomms" to be seen. I missed them. The screenplay is very swear-ridden, perhaps too much?

It's violent. Heads blow up, people are set on fire, cut in half, blown up. It reads as 18 certificate but I guess the gore can edited down to 15 or PG 13 in the US.

Slo-mo is bullet time. It may not be done on screen like The Matrix but it seems similar. It doesn't play a major part in the story. It's featured early on but then it's more or less forgotten about. It does have some bearing on the plot though.

Plot - as mentioned, just Die Hard in a block. There is a a major plot development in the third act but it's still just Die Hard in a block.

The action is your standard stuff - mostly gun fights - a few fist fights too. No big action set pieces as such although I'm sure the action will look good on screen. The final battle is nothing you haven't seen before in a million cheap budget action films. No imagination there.

Conclusion

The screenplay is a missed opportunity to do something different, to show the crazy world of Mega-City 1. All the strangeness, the crazy perps, cits and crimes - there's none of that in Garland's screenplay. Not one thing. Garland is an unimaginative hack with zero passion for the material. A cynical writer just covering the basics. He stuck the rudimentary elements of Dredd's world into a Die Hard plot and believes that's good enough. I hope most fans can see that it's not good enough.

In terms of story originality I'd rate it 0 out of 10. Incredibly unimaginative. Overall I'd rate it 4 out of 10.

I hope this screenplay never gets made.

You've really been hawking this around haven't you dreddhead?

Here, Empire forums, imdb, who knows where else - if they did want to find you, it wouldn't be hard.

I have no idea if the script is genuine or not and I'm not going to read it anyway, so I'm not qualified to pass an opinion on it either way.

I do find it a little suspect that no attempt has been made to pull any of your multiple postings of the script down, so my gut feeling is that it's a fake or a very early draft.

I think how vocal you've been over it is also a little suspect so overall I'm going for a debunk.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but the whole way you've gone about this smells fishy to me.
dreddhead
dreddhead - 7/28/2010, 6:14 AM
KeithM,

You're wrong! :)

The screenplay is genuine. It's Alex Garland's Judge Dredd screenplay. What version - an early draft or final draft - I don't know, but it's genuine.
KeithM
KeithM - 7/28/2010, 1:05 PM
Well, we only have your word for that at this stage, and considering you've never posted either here or on the Empire forums before coming up with this script, and your reliability and trustworthiness or lack thereof is a complete unknown, I'll maintain a healthy level of scepticism thanks.

Provide some actual proof that it's genuine (or time proves it so) and I'll happily concede the point.

Until then, you're just some random guy who says something which may or may not be true.

dreddhead
dreddhead - 7/28/2010, 2:34 PM
It's easy to prove. Here is the Playlist outline review of the screenplay:

http://theplaylist.blogspot.com/2010/07/details-alex-garlands-judge-dredd.html

"Imagine DIE HARD taking place within the world of BLADE RUNNER; that’s the JUDGE DREDD"

I cut the rest out. Here's the end bit:

"this is a gritty film, that plays the world we are in as a realistic future, a very dark, unpleasant crime ridden world as Dredd explains ‘Tweleve serious crimes reported every minute. Seventeen thousand per day. We respond to around six percent’."
-------------------------------------------------------------

Read the final line again.

Dredd says

‘Twelve serious crimes reported every minute. Seventeen thousand per day. We respond to around six percent’.

Here's the exact line in the screenplay. I'm typed it word for word from the screenplay:

Dredd
(to Anderson)
‘Twelve serious crimes reported every minute. Seventeen thousand per day. We respond to around six percent’.

And here's the rest of the scene:

Anderson
Which six percent?

Dredd
Your assessment. You tell me.

Anderson glances down at her bike nav-screen. Waypoint markers are flashing all across the sector map.

Anderson
Peach Trees. Multiple homicide.

Dredd lifts his left hand - which has the radio integrated into his glove.

Dredd
(into his radio)
Dredd responding to Peach Tree. On our way.

-------------------------------------

Dredd's first line of dialogue as mentioned in the Playlist review outline is identical to what's in the screenplay you can download. Plus I've posted the next few lines of dialogue which carries on from what Dredd's said. I think this is absolute proof the leaked screenplay is 100 percent genuine.

KeithM
KeithM - 7/28/2010, 6:12 PM
It's only proof that whoever wrote that script read the review outline. :)

Like I said, if it really is what you say it is, then fair enough, but if so then it's probably a very early, now abandoned draft - or it wouldn't still be up.

You've posted it on all the most visible sites on the internets, so as I said, it wouldn't be hard for them to spot and send a 'cease and desist'.

@Josh Have you had any mails or visits from strange men in dark coats yet?

Have you ever had such a mail on the site asking you to take something like this down?

What are your thoughts on how genuine it is?

I'm not going to read it no matter what, because I don't want to spoil if it does turn out even half accurate, so post up a few lines of dialogue from a scene NOT mentioned or even hinted at by the review and sometime in the next year or two, we'll know one way or another if you were right or not. :)

When the movie or a trailer comes out which actually does prove this is genuine (or the studio/Garland confirms it), pop back dreddhead and I'll humbly doff my cap and apologise for ever doubting you.

Until then though - shields remain set to healthy scepticism.
dreddhead
dreddhead - 7/28/2010, 6:42 PM
Keithm,

All I can do is reiterate what I've said before... I believe it is 100 percent genuine.

There are a few scenes which have been removed. On page 12 it has:

INT. MA-MA's BASE/CELL - CONTINUOUS - SCENE REMOVED

It reads like a final or near final draft.

Why would anyone spend time writing a fake screenplay like this? The screenplay matches 100 PERCENT with the Playlist review outline. It's identical. Everything that's mentioned in that review outline is in this screenplay. So you're saying the Playlist review is fake too? Seems unlikely.

"When the movie or a trailer comes out which actually does prove this is genuine (or the studio/Garland confirms it), pop back dreddhead and I'll humbly doff my cap and apologise for ever doubting you."

I will do that!

At the end of the day, I have no vested interest in this. If it's fake then it's fake and I was tricked. I didn't rate the screenplay that highly so if it's fake that means I get to see a different storyline in the film. If it's genuine then I'm guessing it was leaked for a reason. Perhaps someone wanted people to post negative comments about it. I doubt the leak came from the film's producers.

If you take a look at it, read a few pages, you may change your mind and consider it to be genuine. :)
