ZACK SNYDER'S JUSTICE LEAGUE Director Admits Handling Of Global Release Schedule Has Been "Not Amazing"

Zack Snyder's Justice League is heading to HBO Max on March 18th in the U.S., but plans for an international rollout remain vague. Now, the filmmaker himself has shared his take on how that's been handled.

There's only around a month to go before Zack Snyder's Justice League arrives on HBO Max, but as that service is a U.S. exclusive, no one really knows what the plan is for an international rollout. The movie has been confirmed for a handful of countries, but for the most part, there's no word on what Warner Bros. has planned for countries like the UK and Australia.

In an interview with SnyderCutBR, the filmmaker admitted that the release isn't being handled in an ideal manner, but dismissed notions of this being a deliberate move by Warner Bros.

"Yeah, there has been, you know, not amazing work done with the distribution of the movie. I don't know why that is, I honestly couldn't put my finger on it. I don't want to [make it] seem like there's some sort of conspiracy out there... I don't think so."

Snyder went on to share his take on why the global release has been so poorly handled, and believes it could be a result of the short period of time between the announcement and his cut being finished.

"I think part of the problem is no one saw the movie coming," he adds. "I think that the normal window or the normal way people in Hollywood distribute movies is they understand when the movie gets made that it's going to have to be distributed. Normally, they have like a two-year window to figure that all out. The problem is this happened in six months and came to life. It's caught everyone off guard."

Unfortunately, it sounds a lot like Warner Bros. failed to understand that DC fans in more than just the U.S. want to watch this version of Justice League.

"I do believe that even when the movie was green lit, the Snyder Cut version was green lit, I don't know that there was a sense of urgency or an understanding of the worldwide demand that would be required of distribution and the studio and everyone to satisfy."

With any luck, some sort of international PVOD or Blu-ray release will be announced for Zack Snyder's Justice League before too long. However, with such a short amount of time to go until that HBO Max debut, it's looking increasingly unlikely that fans around the world will be able to watch the "Snyder Cut" at the same time.

Click on the "Next" button below for a breakdown
of Will Beall's Justice League screenplay!

10. Batman And Superman Are Allies

34983943321w344r13

Superman is dead when the Snyder Cut begins, but in Beall's version, the Man of Steel is good friends with Batman. They know each other's secret identities, and meet in a Metropolis diner for a catch-up.

Before heading to Central City to recruit the Flash, there's a battle in Lexcorp Tower against KGBeast and Killer Croc to deal with. Lex Luthor is in the midst of attempting to buy Kryptonite from the former, but they're all interrupted by the arrival of Desaad, one of Darkseid's most loyal followers.

He kills Croc, and makes off with the Kryptonite.

This action-packed, character-heavy opening doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of what's to come, however...

9. Darkseid Is The Film's Big Bad

34983943321w344r134

Steppenwolf doesn't get as much to do in this Justice League, and Darkseid is the lead baddie from the start. The film wastes no time in introducing the ruler of Apokolips, with the opening scene taking place on the villain's home planet.

Snyder and Terrio clearly had a different idea for how Darkseid's big screen introduction would work, as he's only expected to make a cameo appearance in the Snyder Cut. The reason for that is because he was supposed to take center stage in the Justice League: Part 2 film Warner Bros. initially greenlit.

Had Beall's script been used, Darkseid might have beaten Thanos to theaters.

While this film may have had Darkseid in spades, there's one member of the League who was set to be M.I.A.

8. There's No Aquaman

34983943321w344r1344

Jason Momoa's Aquaman has become a firm fan-favorite, and his solo film grossed over $1 billion globally in 2018.

Beall, however, had no intention of using the King of Atlantis. While there are a lot of other heroes in this Justice League, it seems the writer couldn't quite figure out how to bring this divisive superhero to the screen. Remember, when Beall was penning this screenplay, it was before DC Comics reinvented Arthur Curry with the New 52 reboot.

As you'll soon come to see, it would have been tricky to squeeze Aquaman into this story, because Beall instead focused on characters who Snyder overlooked in his film.

Chief among them is Green Lantern...

7. Green Lantern/Hawkman Team-Up

Kwzvifya o

There was a huge cosmic element to Beall's Justice League screenplay, with Green Lantern John Stewart and Hawkman teaming up in an outer space nightclub to stop Kanjar Ro from helping Dessad weaponize the Kryptonite he stole from Lex Luthor and KGBeast.

We don't get a Hal Jordan mention, and this film was presumably set in a separate world to 2011's Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds.

While all this is happening, there's a subplot about Amanda Waller and the Department of Metahuman. Interestingly, she has her own team made up of Tattooed Man, Copperhead, Cheetah, and Solomon Grundy (we'll come back to them).

Also on Earth, Superman is kidnapped by Steppenwolf and his Parademons, and taken back to Apokolips.

6. Massacre On Oa

7mb0nanu o

Batman heads to Themyscira to seek Wonder Woman's help, and we learn they have a romantic history.

John Stewart, meanwhile, returns to Earth, and and meets with Bruce, Diana, and the Flash in the Batcave (which is packed full of Easter Eggs, including The Penguin's Umbrella and multiple Batmobiles and Batsuits).

As the team formulates a plan to rescue Superman, John heads back to Oa, only to find the planet decimated by Darkseid. Katma Tui, Kilowag, Guy Gardner, Salakk, and Tomar-Re are all dead, a sign Beall wasn't exactly thinking ahead to their potential future in the DC Universe...for now, anyway.

With no Green Lantern Corps standing in his way, Darkseid heads to Earth.

5. Batman v Superman

Dsrbjtc1 o

Superman has fallen under Darkseid's control, and a fight with Batman ensues.

Like in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, the Caped Crusader dons a special armored Batsuit to take on the Man of Steel in hand-to-hand combat.

It's Wonder Woman who eventually figures out how to free Superman from Darkseid, and the hero quickly rejoins the League to repel the villain's invasion. However, things get a little strange at this point in Beall's Justice League film because Kal-El finds himself thrust eleven years into the future after travelling through a Boom Tube.

This has to be where Snyder and Terrio got the idea to tackle a "Knightmare" future in their version.

4. A Desolate Future

U3geltzc o

Superman learns that Darkseid has wiped out 80% of the planet's population, and Diana and Bruce are leading what's left of the human resistance.

Batman is Wonder Woman's second in command, and they have a son: Clark Wayne.

It seems Superman's disappearance through the Boom Tube left Earth defenseless, and even Lex Luthor is now aligned with the heroes. "Batman's Berzerkers" is a team made up of Deathstroke, Captain Boomerang, Huntress, and Cheetah, essentially meaning the Dark Knight is the leader of the Suicide Squad.

The survivors are based in Superman's Fortress of Solitude.

3. Time-Travel

34983943321w344r13444445

We know Batman and Cyborg are responsible for sending the Flash back in time in the SnyderVerse, though it's likely those scenes were being saved for the sequel.

In Beall's film, it's Lex Luthor who figured out how to send Barry Allen eleven years into the past.

The Future Flash arrives on Earth prior to Darkseid's invasion, and dies in his younger self's arms shortly after warning the younger Barry about what's to come for the League.

After warning his teammates, the stage is set for an epic battle...

2. Epic Final Battle

34983943321w344r134444454

Superman has already been taken to Apokolips at this point, so Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, and Green Lantern travel to the planet to stop Darkseid before he can brainwash their teammate.

Superman is rescued, and the heroes take on the villain and his forces.

The Green Lantern Corps - who are alive in this timeline -  soon arrive to lend a helping hand, as do the Amazon warriors from Themyscira. As you might expect, the heroes emerge victorious from the battle, and stop that desolate future from ever becoming a reality.

Darkseid may be defeated, but there's another foe waiting in the wings.

1. President Lex Luthor

34983943321w344r1344444543

Lex Luthor is planning to run for President, a nice hint at how his story played out in the comics. However, there's one final surprise that could set the stage for a Superman spinoff film.

Lex receives a message from his future self, and learns that Superman is, in fact, Clark Kent.

Beall's screenplay doesn't reveal what the villain does with that information, but there are plenty of ways that could have been addressed. In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Lex deduces that himself, and the pay off wasn't quite what a lot of fans out there hoped for.

Beall's film sounds like it could have been a fun ride, but how much Snyder and Terrio borrowed is currently up in the air.

The roll-out’s actually better than I was expecting. It’s going to a lot of European countries and on Crave in Canada, which is a lot more organized than whatever [frick]ing happened with WW84’s international roll-ouy

@tmp3 - I haven't heard anything about European releases. What have you heard? I have HBO Max through VPN anyway but I know people who are wondering.

Geez, you people are obsessed with hating on Snyder. Crying about a [frick]ing headline that is technically correct anyways.. woof lol

It’s a 4 hour long director’s cut of a 4 year old, maligned movie that massively underperformed... of course nobody knows what to do with it, or what kind of demand there actually is for it.
Conquistador
Conquistador - 2/15/2021, 4:02 AM
@Chewtoy - I think HBO max figured out there was clearly a demand and would help with their subscriptions. I think what Snyder's saying is that, they didn't realise that worldwide would be thinking "what about the rest of us". They should have worked all that out before throwing a bunch of money at it to be honest to maxamise their profits all in one go.

Unfortunately by the time is does get to the UK for example, it would be on top ten most downloaded (illegally) movies of 2021. and their potential for profits from possibly selling to another steamer, or an international HBOMAX launch at that point would have greatly decreased.

They should have waited until all that was sorted. The same lover and haters would still have consumed in the same capcity as next month. Either way i'll get on the VPN and give it a watch...now i just have to find 4 hours of time to give up. :- (

BornToLose - 2/15/2021, 9:24 AM
@Chewtoy - well, the new trailer racked up 10 million views in a single day on YouTube alone and that’s not accounting for any reposted videos on various YouTube channels... so HBO better get to it. There’s money to be made via subscribers.

I think you DO want to make it seem like there's some sort of conspiracy out there, Zack.

Kinda goes for all HBO Max releases. I'm not going to the cinema anytime soon, but without an online international release I won't be able to watch this, Judas and the Black Messiah, Godzilla vs Kong and Mortal Kombat unfortunately

It's expected to be released via Sky here in Germany (which I don't have), but so far there hasn't been any official announcement. Cinemas likely won't be open in March.

I guess I'd have to get it another way, but I'll be fine experiencing the movie via spoiler reactions and discussions until I can legally watch it for free someday.

HBO Max are missing out on a lot of subscriptions by releasing all of this stuff in the US only with no plans to make them available in any other rental or streaming services internationally. Anyone outside of the US who really wants to watch this stuff will have pirated it waaay before HBO Max is available in their country. Another example of the US thinking as if the entire rest of the world is an afterthought

"I don't think there's some kind of conspiracy"

I don't think anyone thought that until now but it's good to know that Snyder kind of keeps sh***ing on WB. Goes to show they really might be done with each other, one can only hope.

As for the roll-out, it's messy indeed. But that goes for every WB releases movie this year. Most of the world doesn't have HBO Max yet so their stuff is either not releasing there or gets released via other streamers to buy like Amazon.
It's not a conspiracy against this movie in particular but a messy release strategy
Conquistador
Conquistador - 2/15/2021, 4:50 AM
@Blergh - Don't see why he should kiss their ass either. Warner max begged him to come back and to do it without him having to compromise a dam thing further, and isn't working with Hamada or other big wigs previously involved. Good for him i say. No one talks about how they shit all over him either. Can't give someone free reign and then change your mind because you won't get your bonus... terrible business. But yeah i wasn't there.
Blergh
Blergh - 2/15/2021, 4:55 AM
@Jaykay21 - I'm neither a WB nor Snyder fan, so I'm actually kind of more on his side here. He gets to be bitter about their decisions in the past, he certainly hasn't been treated all too well after they treated him like a god at first. Got to be incredibly humbling to have a "fall from grace" by the ones that put you in power in the first place.

I just don't think the release is a concious attack on his movie, they want this movie to bolster their sub-count, so there's no reason for them to have an interest in seeing it fail.

However WB is a pretty inept company with some mid-boggling decision making, so I'm chalking the release chaos up to WB being WB.
Twenty23Three
Twenty23Three - 2/15/2021, 5:19 AM
@Blergh - if you look on Twitter there are a lot of people who genuinely think there is a conspiracy to minimise the films impact. Obviously it’s all madness but I’d image some of that has got back to him and that’s what he’s addressing
Conquistador
Conquistador - 2/15/2021, 5:21 AM
@Blergh – Wouldn’t call myself a hard-core fan, but I did like his remake on DoTD and that Owl’s movie was THE SH!T! (totally underrated). I agree though, and he goes on to elaborate on why he thinks there's ISN'T a conspiracy, like other hard-core fanboys are suggesting
Personally I think WB/DC/Hamada didn't want shit to do with it, and did not want to put any exposure or resources towards that. I’m guessing however Warner Media, and HBOMAX seeing the demand then realised they needed the content and just went ahead and agreed to it, announced it and set it in motion without working out the distribution. They should have waited I say as piracy is going to kill any profit they could have made from selling to other streamers or preparing for an international launch of the platform. Same will happen when all the other blockbuster movies get released this year. I really hope to see Dune and M4trix in theatres. They really missed a few opportunities there and it’s going to impact on all the other movies that haven’t even started production yet when they try to claw back their expenses.
Blergh
Blergh - 2/15/2021, 5:32 AM
@Jaykay21 - agreed, there was a demand for the movie. I'm still not sure if 70mil was a good investment though but we'll see about that.

I'm really anxious for WB's other releases as I REALLY want all the Dune books to get adapted to movie form, it'd be such a shame if WBs lack of foresight prohibited these movies from happening.
Conquistador
Conquistador - 2/15/2021, 5:45 AM
@Blergh - Yeah, but WB seem to be shitting on all their directors. I understand it's a business at the end of the day, but they need to have a better plan. To rush everything to a streamer to make $$ back just shows they want all the quick returns even if it's less than expected. They don't want to risk the wait.

But as a hungry consumer, i'm of course going to eat it alll up! haha

$70 million isn't terrible to be honest, when you compare 2 hours worth of $300 mill for josstice league, to $70 mill for 4 hours on snyders. It's not like i paid for it, or even paying for a subscription haha. I'm sure they can cut alot of cost on advertising this time around as it's a steaming service and don't need to do any PR as snyder's doing all that himself for himself.
Blergh
Blergh - 2/15/2021, 5:56 AM
@Jaykay21 - Absolutely, they didn't inform anyone, not even their partner studios. If I was Legendary I'd sign a new deal with another studio.
WB is an incredibly shortsighted studio, only beaten by Sony in their lack of foresight (Disney comes close third).

the 70mil are an extension of the 300mil they already invested though. The money is to finish effects and shoot additional materal. The VFX could have been done on a CW level budget as well, they would have looked worse for sure but it still wouldn't have been such a financial drain. But we'll see how it turns out.
AC1
AC1 - 2/15/2021, 4:42 AM
Man, I know Snyder is trying to calm some of his more shall we say "excitable" fans down by specifically saying "I DON'T think there's a conspiracy" but you just know that they're just gonna latch onto that last word and start screaming "THERE'S A CONSPIRACY! WB ARE INTENTIONALLY TRYING TO BLOCK THE MOVIE!" from the rooftops.

Anyway, I hope we get some news on international rollout soon. Here in the UK I'm really hoping it just ends up on Netflix, I'm pretty sure they're already streaming a bunch of other DC stuff anyway (including Batman v Superman last time I checked) so it wouldn't be entirely out of the blue. Having said that, I can also see them going down the VOD route or even straight to blu ray or some combination of the two in order to try and drive more profit seeing as they won't be getting any HBO subs.
