Will Disney's New Movie Plan Affect Our Heroes On Screen?

Disney is throwing a slight curve into the movies they will make. How will it affect Marvel movies?

Producers of the movie "The Proposal" say that Disney has informed them that they are going to focus on two kinds of films for now.

The first is "the $150 million plus blockbuster with lots of special effects and built in merchandising."

The second is "low budget productions."

Obviously films like IM2, Thor and Captain America fall into the first category. The question that immediately comes to my mind is: What about films such as Ant Man and the second tier heroes?

Marvel reportedly had plans for Ant Man, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist and others in the near future. Will their status as B-list heroes allow for a big enough budget for them to be made?

I know the alternative, going low budget would never do the characters any justice.

I am very interested to see what effect, if any this has on the future of our heroes on screen.

One of the things that stood out to me when the merger went through was Disney saying they would utilize Marvel characters in different forms. I think we will see a lot more animated series/features. Their success will determine live action versions. Live action tv series is also a possibility.

DOGS- I AGREE 100%!..I would LOVE a LIVE ACTION marvel
tv show, and ALOT more MARVEL animated MOVIES!
Ant man would make a great animated movie,
Iron Fist TV show??..maybe..Daredevil would be a
nice cameo on that show..Maybe Iron Fist should
be animated too.

Angelo: Good point. I believe "The Proposal" was made for under $50 million and this topic came up when the producers wanted to do a sequel. Disney said they wouldn't be interested in a sequel because of this new plan.

@Angelo: If they had a like/dislike button I could chose next to people's topics, I would give you a thumbs up. Sometimes it's better to have movies like Blade where you have shadows and music to compensate for the special effects. I could see a Dr. Strange movie being made with a Blade feel and budget despite all the grand scale mysticism.

Meh. Nothing to do with philosophy. Has to do with economics. People are not going to every piece of crap film that comes out now, due largely to the economy. Basically Disney is wisely being more selective to what kind of crap that they're going to foist on us.
This is neither good nor bad, except they may be more careful on hiting the mark with quality filmmaking which is good for us.

SandMan101 - 2/25/2010, 5:41 PM
I understand theyre economic responsibilities and i respect them for that...but im not worried about that. Im worried that the minute disney gets theyre hands on anything, they want to suck it dry till they have earned every cent from it. They would be more willing to sacrifice story for gimmicks. Im afraid were going to have a Mulan 2 instead of a dark knight if u know what i mean.

i don't see the term low budget as a bad term. It may actually make the movies seem more gritty and better. movies like iron fist, luke cage, daredevil don't really need a huge budget to be affective. I'm more curious to see how this would affect like characters like Nova which even though he isn't really a huge name in comics would only be a success if they used a giant budget to make a space epic.
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 2/25/2010, 5:51 PM
gestlmutant : You hit the nail on the proverbial head. Nova is exactly the type of character I would have questions about.

Joker08 - 2/25/2010, 6:10 PM
@gestlmutant: I couldn't agree with you more. If a film were forced to deal with a smaller budget, we may see more character-driven pieces... In so many of today's epic films we see SFX used as a crutch - merely a gimmick. I think this is great for the most part.

think about this the first Blade movie was actually a low budget movie. the budget for that movie was only $45,000,000 and it made $131,183,530. the budget aint a issue they just need a good story and director to do these movies. even big budget movies does not do well it might make the money but sometimes it fail big time.

i believe Ant Man and Doctor Strange will get big budget tho.

Black Panther, Luke Cage and Iron Fist will be low budget movies. plus Black Panther, Luke Cage and Iron Fist most likey will not be distributed by Disney but their alternate movie divisions i.e. Hollywood Pictures or Touchstone Pictures.

ATOMbomb - 2/25/2010, 6:18 PM
I agree with the SFX thing, yeah it is needed but it should not be the entire film. You can have a character driven film and it be a CBM.

seriously, who wants to see Ant Man and the second tier heroes on the big screen?!!? i don't understand how some people want to see every single comic book character come to life. why saturate the market with (more) trash.

@ sandman

i posted it another article, but i'll post it again.

Disney might come out with disneyfied "versions" of comics and toys and shows and things, but they would be complete idiots to do that with all of their existing properties and media. they would lose the already existing fanbase that they make the majority of their money from. thats bad business.

why would you buy a company that makes most of their money off of pre-existing fans, just to turn around and push those fans away?? Marvel already has awesome sales in the children demographic, as well as the adult demographic. why would they even CONSIDER pushing away more than half of their fanbase?? it would be lunacy. it would defeat the entire purpose of the reason they bought marvel to begin with, which is to make money!

i don't think you realize just how many companies Disney owns, that you don't even know about. i'll put just a FEW up.

Touchstone Pictures. Hollywood Pictures. Miramax Films. Dimension Films. Pixar Animation Studios. Buena Vista International. these are all movie studios that Disney OWNS, yet they stay away and let them run the way they always ran before they were bought out. MANY of these companies put out rated R movies ALL the time. Disney has done NOTHING to ruin ANYTHING that these companies do. why would they start with Marvel??

Disney has given NO ONE ANY reason to think they will ruin anything. you're basing your anti-disney comments off of nothing other than your own fear, and not fact. you say Disney sucks companies dry, well guess what, thats the whole reason they buy companies, to make money off of the things that the other companies do better. until Disney gives you a solid reason to think they will ruin marvel, you should relax :) but don't worry, you're not the only one. like Odinsbeard said in another article, "can you name ONE thing Disney has EVER done to make you think they will ruin Marvel?? name one thing...

i don't mean to sound condescending or like i'm singling you out, because this anti-disney talk goes on all the time. so no offense personally :) its just that everytime there's even IFFY news, all of a sudden people blame Disney. yet you don't hear ANYONE PRAISING Disney when we get great news. kind of ironic, huh?
Scion
Scion - 2/25/2010, 6:27 PM
I don't think they have any concerns as to the characters as much as they care about the almighty buck. I don't know what the deal is with the Marvel exec and how much power they actually retain over the characters so this is pretty worrisome. Unless the big blockbuster hero route is where they were planning to go with the Marvel buyout from the get go.

I'm also afraid with LOST since Disney owns the rights to and may beat it into the ground after the series is over =/
Joker08
Joker08 - 2/25/2010, 6:32 PM
@ATOMbomb: If you're refering to what I said, a perfect example would be The Dark Knight - reviewers said wasn't like a CBM because of it's focus on characters. It still had action, just not overdone. Or Sin City, aside from the stylize presentation, it's a very dramatic and noirish character-driven film. CGI and SFX are necessary with these films, some more than others - but it would be nice to see something different, something untraditional. Oh, and and your avatar is spooky :)

Upupandaway - 2/25/2010, 6:35 PM
@CDB: Disney put out Pulp Fiction. I'm completely with you man. I agree with all of the others saying that low budget does not equal low quality. I would, however, like Black Panther to be bigger budget because I would like it to be on location.

this could be good news i think .. it may mean we get some more comicbook films yer they will be low budget whatever that means but still i think it means we will be getting more films once they work out what films are going to be the big 1s i really think a lot of CBM are going to be made i dnt care if they are blockbusters or not i just wana see um get made

@Dogs I agree 100%. Marvel has alot of potential for direct to DVD animated realeases as awell as live action and animated tv series.

An Alias tv show could be cool. And I always thought a show about the Vault would be inbteresting. Kind of a Law and Order/Oz meets the Marvel Universe.

"I know the alternative, going low budget would never do the characters any justice. "

i strongly disagree with this statement. it's all about having the right mind behind the production. someone creative enough could do an Iron Fist or Luke Cage movie on a very low budget, absolutely.

ANOTHER CASE OF FANBOY PARANOIA

corndog@ i know you're with me. and your post was nothing short of genius

marvel would never have the budget to do these movies by themselves anyway so im not sure what the problem is. Disney gives them MORE money to do things they wouldn't have been able to before. Disney makes these movies more of a possibility rather than shooting them down.
OdinsBeard
OdinsBeard - 2/25/2010, 7:14 PM
and i don't know about the rest of you guys (shaman might call me out for this:)) but i love disney! they've entertained me for years and continue to do so with their commitment to great story telling. sure they make some bad movies but they can't all be winners. and who doesn't love Disneyland?!?! i smell a Marvel section of the happiest place on earth right around the corner and that would be sweet!
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 2/25/2010, 7:18 PM
OdinsBeard: I didn't mean every character. Your absolutely correct with Cage, Iron Fist and any of the street level characters.

The ones I'm referring to are the Cosmic characters or any of the flying, laser shooting type characters that would warrant a larger amount of special effects.

Marvel has stated they want to get some of their cosmic characters on the big screen. Some of these heroes are not what you would call A-list heroes. I just wonder if their second tier nature would allow for a large enough budget to properly bring them to life.

My fault for not being more clear. There is absolutely no paranoia anywhere in my little world. I merely posed a question. I neither hate nor fear Disney.

DannyRand401 : I believe "The Proposal" was made for under $50 million and this topic came up when the producers wanted to do a sequel. Disney said they wouldn't be interested in a sequel because of this new plan.

dude! that idea is pure gold!!!! a show about the Vault would have such high potential!!!!!!! they could literally put ANY supervillain in it they wanted (as long as they own the rights of course). cameos galore!!!! wow, thats seriously one of the best ideas i've from anyone on this site. good call man! i would definately watch that.

Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 2/25/2010, 7:46 PM
CDB & OdinsBeard : You both need to back up. I have never said anything bad about Disney. I have no worries when it comes to Disney "messing" with Marvel characters.

My question is: are Marvels characters going to get descent treatment on screen for at or under $50million bucks? The point of this article is they are focusing on movies OVER $150 million or under $50 million.

Now, how many of Marvels B-list characters do you think can be filmed for over or under that amount? Not many. Most fall somewhere in the middle.

Now, find someone else to pin your paranoia badge on because the damn thing doesn't fit me.

I don't think we have anything to worry about with Disney!
Joe Johnston walking off set just looks like a negotiation
ploy for more money! Probably his agent/lawyer told him to
do it to squeeze a little more jingle outta Disney!

This isn't the Disney I grew up with. I watched Mickey Mouse cartoons and anything during the 90's. Nowadays, the words I hear when discussing Disney include every homophobic word in the book. I hope Epic Mickey can change all that.

And watch what you say about the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus. They did that "We Are the World" remake, and if you bring one of their names up and say that they screwed it up, you get a grammatically-retarded response saying that you fail at life and have no heart.

doctorretroandthepogs - 2/25/2010, 8:55 PM
Um, I don't know why everyone is freaking out. First of all, Disney bought Marvel because Marvel/Marvel Studios are successful. They are not going to mess with it if "kiddify" anything. Heres a great example. Disney owns Miramax. Heres a list of a few movies made by Miramax since Disney acquired them in 1993:

All the Kevin Smith films
All the Quentin Tarantino films (sans Reservior Dogs)
The Crow
Mighty Aphrodite
Trainspotting
From Dusk Till Dawn
Hellraiser: Bloodline
Swingers
Velvet Goldmine
No Country for Old Men
Hero
Sin City

I don't think theres anything to worry about.
