Damon Lindelof Not Returning To Write The PROMETHEUS Sequel

Confirming a previous report which suggested that he won't be a part of the follow-up to Ridley Scott's Prometheus, writer Damon Lindelof lengthily explains the reason of why he is no longer going to be on writing duties for the sequel to the science fiction thriller film.

Back in August, 20th Century Fox confirmed plans to move ahead with a sequel to this year's Prometheus (set to be released in 2014 or 2015), while writer Damon Lindelof - who was responsible for rewriting Jon Spaihts' early draft of the movie - expressed his resentment over returning to pen the script for the follow-up movie due to his commitment to other projects. This has seemingly been confirmed by the Lost creator himself, via an interview with Steve Weintraub of Collider at a Bad Robot event last week, in which he provides us with a lengthy explanation of why he is going to miss out the chance of collaborating with director Ridley Scott once more. Check it outbelow...

I am not [involved at all with the
Prometheus sequel]. Ridley [Scott] and I talked at great length during the story process of the first movie about what subsequent movies would be if Prometheus were to be successful. And I think that the movie ended in a very specific way that hinted at, or strongly implied that there were going to be continuing adventures worthy of writing stories. What those stories would be would not necessarily usurp or transcend the Alien franchise as we saw it because we know that the Nostromo hasn’t come along yet. So the idea was to set up a universe that… Is it a prequel? Okay. If that’s what we want to call it, sure. But the sequel to this movie is not Alien. The sequel to this movie is this other thing.

So Ridley and I talked about what that other thing might be, and he was excited about doing it. But then I think what ended up happening was that the movie came out, and there was a reaction to the movie. And I got really wrapped up in
Star Trek, and really wrapped up in this movie that I’m producing and writing with Brad Bird. And I have a TV project that I was really passionate about. Ridley and I had a meeting after Prometheus came out where we started talking again about where this journey would go. And in that meeting I said to him, unfortunately, before he could ask me and go through the discomfort of whether he was going to ask me or not… It’s sort of like having a date where you’re letting the other person know, “I’m in another relationship.” So I can’t tell you that he asked me and I said no. But I did communicate to him that I was working on these other things.

The thing about
Prometheus was it was a rewrite. Jon Spaihts wrote a script and I rewrote it. And still it was a year of my life that I spent on Prometheus, kind of all in. The idea of building a sequel to it—from the ground up this time—with Ridley is tremendously exciting. But at the same time, I was like, "Well that’s probably going to be two years of my life." I can’t do what J.J. [Abrams] does. I don’t have the capability. I’m usually very single-minded creatively. I can only be working on one thing at a time. So I said to him, "I really don’t think I could start working on this movie until I do this other stuff. And I don’t know when the other stuff is going to be done." And he was like, "Well, okay, it’s not like I asked you anyways." He and I are on excellent terms and it was a dream come true to work with him. But much to the delight of all the fanboys, I don’t see myself being involved in Prometheus-er.

Judging from the mixed reception Prometheus earned from critics and fans alike, foremost due to the criticism aimed toward the many "unanswered questions" included in Lindelof's final version of the script, this report will most likely be met with greatly divided responses as well. So, are you glad that Damon Lindelof is not returning to write the Prometheus sequel, or do you find it as a disadvantageous move instead? As usual, share your thoughts on the space provided below.

Prometheus follows a team of scientists who travel through the universe on the spaceship "Prometheus" on a voyage to investigate alien life forms. The team of scientists becomes stranded on an Alien world, and as they struggle to survive it becomes clear that the horrors they experience are not just a threat to themselves, but to all of mankind. Under the direction of Ridley Scott and starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Logan Marshall Green, Idris Elba, and Guy Pearce, the movie was released on May 31, 2012.

I don't really mind this; Prometheus was very good, but it wasn't without plot holes.

Prometheus is a very hot curvy chick with sexy british accent and a slightly below average intellect. Her sexiness and accent mask her stupidity well.

good movie though, i'll give it a 7/10 with deleted scenes. Shame on you ridley you are better than this :(

Still haven't seen it. Missed it in the theaters and couldn't motivate myself to pick up the blu-ray yet. Originally I was very excited about it, but I have to admit that in this case the very mixed reviews kinda alienated me. ;)

The flute killed it for me. Whoever thought that was a great idea should never ever be allowed to work even close to a movie again, not even selling popcorn in the lobby. I mean, a gt dmn flute!? No neural connection or soe crazy advanced mechanism you would expect from godlike beeings. It might aswell have been a harmonica or a freeking banjo! Pull out an axe and played the intro to Smoke on the Water would at least have rocked..

... Good, I guess? Is it possible to make a decent sequel to a fundamentally broken first film? Does anyone even care anymore?

Frankly, if the powers that be don't see fit to give Green Lantern a sequel, I don't see how Prometheus is any more deserving.

... Other than because it made a boatload of money, I guess.

But seriously, Prometheus sucked WAY harder than Green Lantern.

...

... I just want them to make a Green Lantern 2, dammit.

DON'T JUDGE ME!

And so begins the Make-it-up-as-you-go way of Hollywood sequels while fanboys argue to make sense of plot holes from film to film that the many different writers couldn't give a shit about as long as they get paid to stretch the same story elements as far as it can go with the "Franchise".. suckers!

The scientist, with what must be one hell of a resume to even qualify him for such an expedition in the first place, tried to pet the hissing snake thing. Now I'm no scientist, what with all that there fancy book learnin' and all, but even I know enough not to go around trying to scratch hissing space cobras behind the ears.

I just don't like Lindelof's intentionally ambiguous writing style. The man spends so much time dreaming up plot threads he has no intent to close, and forgets to make the straight-forward stuff plausible and logical.

easily the most dissapointing movie of the year. i have no clue how that shitty as script was given the green light by a director or Ridley Scott's caliber.

The script was the worst part of Prometheus!!!
titansupes
titansupes - 12/20/2012, 3:06 AM
@Shamo Because Ridley Scott, by his OWN admission in a biography, doesn't know a good script from a bad one. He just gets and idea in his head of what type of movie he'd like from a production/visual standpoint (he started out as a painter/artist) and the first script that passes him that matches that in some way he runs with.

I agree, Good film... Had it's faults like the flute but with Lindelof off the credits hopefully the threads that made this movie will begin to close in the next while opening others to make it a trilogy. I understand why alot of people had problems but for me it was very much like The Hobbit... I was just damn glad to be back in that universe! :)

prometheus was such a long boring convoluted piece of shit. it made alien 3's pacing look like sonic the hedgehog. and "And I think that the movie ended in a very specific way that hinted at, or strongly implied that there were going", that shit movie only 'works' if it had a sequel, since it had no real ending, answered nothing and every character did everything without rhyme or reason. this movie is another pirates of the carribbean 2

i liked it.

and @zeon yeah dgabbor2's right, american gangster was fine. and so was body of lies. neither was flawless, but your criterion was "watchable" so i think we're easily in the park on those two... and probably a few more.

Prometheus was a good movie, people are just pissed it wasn't an Alien prequel! This reminds me of how a bunch of people thought Sucker Punch was too confusing when the story was very simple. These "Godlike creatures" were nothing more than scientist who F'D up & tried to fix the problem! They weren't these great "Engineers" who created the human race, they ran a test that's why there was only one of them that drank that crap.

Prometheus fully exposed Lindelhof as the one trick pony hack we suspected.

Just like Lost he exploited a ridiculous formula where his plot hole ridden stories could end with major cliffhangers and zero explanation of any of his character's motivations. This isn't a goddamned series. You have to be able to make movies which are self contained or else audiences will catch on.

Suckerpunch wasn't confusing, it was a goddmaned awful mess written by a director with little sense of how to construct a coherent or compelling story.

beane2099 - 12/20/2012, 6:35 AM
I liked it for the most part. The too many unanswered questions bit was annoying and there were several plot holes. However, it won't just be "fan boys" that are happy. I was still working at a movie theater when this came out and confusion was a general reaction from a lot of movie goers walking out of the theater as I waited to clean up after them. It's one thing to leave mystery. It's quite another to leave half your movie unexplained.

You can't say "it's a good movie" if you say "it has plot holes". Plot holes tear a movie apart. You could say "I liked it, but it had plot holes".

The visuals do appear to distract some people from grasping how bad the story was.

i still laugh at people saying plotholes ruined this movie. um this is a site for comicbook movies. almost every CBM has plotholes. we got batman, spiderman and avengers this year and all 3 had holes. i still pissed at thor being in avengers beging explained haphazardly and the he not seeing jane at all (fail) situation now taking up room in his sequel that by rights should hit the ground running and not stop.

point is if you like or dislike something fine. but everyone needs to stop kidding themselves. almost every movie on this site can be subjected to the criticism prometheus gets.

who am i kidding here, continue little ones ;)

Prometheus was [frick]ing awful. I was so disappointed when it was over. Thank god this guy is out of the sequel, he was the main reason it was bad. I still will not waste money watching the next one(s) on theaters, will wait to download them.
