Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life - real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when he procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police -- controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world -- Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

Total Recall is scheduled to be released August 3, 2012. Starring Colin Farrell as Doug Quaid, Kate Beckinsale as Lori, Bryan Cranston as Vilos Cohaagen, Jessica Biel as Melina, Bill Nighy as Quatto, and John Cho as McClane.

Basically Biel is saying "Well, they think that most people are idiots and they didn't want to confuse them"

it wouldn't add much to the movie anyway..

It would've been cool! I heard about this and I think it's a missed opportunity.

When you're making a movie, you're trying to get the audience to emotionally connect with a character. When you have the character looking completely different in scenes relating to who the person "really" is--the history of the character, what truly defines him--it detaches that from the character you're watching throughout the rest of the film. You lose some of the emotional connection between the character and the audience for the sake of narritive "cool" factor.

So, it's not that they thought the audience was too stupid to get it--although some probably would be confused by it--but that the emotional detachment (the emotional "confusion," if you will) affects the character/audience connection negatively, even when the audience is aware that it is the same character played by a different actor.

Leoatrox you sound like you gave a better explanation but its no excuse. There are many examples of identity change or physical transformation while keeping the audience emotionally attached to the character. The imaginarium of doctor parnassus is quite drastic with four actors portraying the same person. Then of course you have the likes of the hulk, Dr jekyl and Mr hide, the invisible man is quite good cause you no longer see him. Identity changes are not new and do not confuse the audience, in fact it more often then not surprises them and grabs even more attention. It is actually quite a unique tool. Bit if the film already contained so many twists and turns in the plot, the identity change just might have been too much.

these interviews are incredibly stupid, especially when you have basic wannabe actors who try to make themselves look smart and try to make movie look deeper than it actually is.

So they think we are all idiots?

Not exactly a big revelation, I could tell by watching the movie they made. And that, my friends, is the reason it bombed.

@LeoAtrox

Just WATCH the damn movie and tell me if their priorities were

"allowing the audience to make an emotional connection with the character"
OR
"'cool' factor"

Learn to read between the lines boy, what she was saying (in laymen terms) was "we thought the audience would be too stupid to get it".

complicated, it WON'T be...but it would make NO sense. i mean, story-wise maybe, but..actually, she is absolutely RIGHT. if doug, or whoever da heck his real name was, got a different face altogether before, it WON'T make sense for her to still have that connection with him after the whole recall thing. she won't even recognize him, right..??

now lemme get back to WHY, story-wise it DOES make sense..the bad guy (malcolm in the middle's dad) WOULD wanna change his top agent's face to 'protect' him from the rebels and making sure he won't go back helping his rebel pals..if i were him, i WOULD change his face and not just his MEMORIES...duh!!

but, i think Biel's not ALL wrong in her answers. and there ARE audience who are THAT stupid to get confused by 2 different actors playing the same one character in a movie.

Film was damn good, saw it twice now. Some of the best conceptual designs I've seen in ages and best film Colin Farrell has been in since In Bruges. Fanboys can boycott it all they want for Arnies sake, it runs that cheesy version ragged on every level. This film at least looks like it was shot for cinema not TV like that crap all the sad fanboys are still trying to classify as a classic.

The real story is that Ethan Hawke at the last minute said "[frick] it" and just walked off the set.

BIGBMH

I get the idea, but I think the effect is stronger to show the same actor behaving differently. It makes it easier to communicate the disorienting feeling of a person seeing himself doing things and talking about things he has no memory of.

@monkeyballs C'mon be honest, man. Mine was a typo, yours was really wrong spelling. These are commonly used words, ingrained in your subconscious. You don't get typos like that. If you meant to type "paid" and had a typo, it would have been something like paod, oaid or paif.

Anyway, let's not fight and call each other idiots, it's childish. Hell, I didn't even call you one. At least, if anything, we'll proofread our posts beforehand next time around.
