Al Pacino Turned Down A Role In STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE

While speaking at "An Evening With Al Pacino" over the weekend, the Academy Award winning actor revealed that he could have starred as a major character in George Lucas' first Star Wars trilogy. Which one? Click on to find out.

Al Pacino isn't know for his sci-fi/fantasy roles, and obviously leans more towards gritty crime dramas, but that might all have been different if he had accepted a role in THE ultimate space-set adventure; Star Wars. While talking at "An Evening With Al Pacino" the actor reveals that George Lucas offered him the role of Han Solo in the original trilogy, but he turned it down because he couldn't wrap his head around it! "It was mine for the taking but I didn’t understand the script." admits Pacino. That role went to Harrison Ford but he wasn't Lucas' first choice because the director didn't want to work with an actor he had previously (on American Graffiti) and the likes of Jack Nicholson, Chevy Chase and Bill Murray we all considered, alongside Pacino, as potential Solos. Could you picture Pacino in that role? The courtship of Princess Leia would probably have been a lot different anyway.

I don't think I could see him in the role having chemistry with Carrie Fisher or MArk Hamil as much as Harrision Ford did.

Pacino is a crime/gangster man not an action fantasy man, it wouldn't have worked.

Just more proof that George Lucas owes the success of Star Wars to others and to dumb luck.

Like Inspector Clouseau bumbling around but solving cases Lucas clumsily and stupidly somehow solved Episode IV.
But his dumb luck ran out and every big movie decision he made since Empire sucked.

Would have been interesting to see him in the role, but who know's how it would have turned out if he accepted the role.

It would've been funny to see a Han Solo as short, or shorter than Luke. I'm glad they went with Harrison Ford.

I couldn't imagine Pacino being Hans Solo just no way in the world. He's a great actor and I love his movies, but as Solo no I don't see it.

Wow, that's so random. Everything worked out for the best. Harrison Ford is the perfect Han Solo.

Could people please stop referring to it as a new hope? I realise its the subtitle but nobody ever called it that until the crappy prequels arrived. The film is Star Wars...end of.

Interesting but old news, and I disagree with everybody that thinks Pacino would of been terrible for the part.

Has anyone of those people even seen his wide range of legendary performances? Besides Scarface, Sent of a Woman, The Godfather movies, and Heat?

The Man is a legend for a reason and he was at his peak in the 70's. Would of absolutely nailed it! Who knows how much his career would be different from today.
