Benedict Cumberbatch On Why He Dropped Out Of CRIMSON PEAK (No, It Wasn't STAR WARS)

The Star Trek Into Darkness star hints that his reason for walking away from Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak was down to creative differences with the Pacific Rim director, and again confirms that Star Wars Episode VII had nothing to do with it. Check it out!

In a lengthy interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Benedict Cumberbatch has once again been forced to dismiss reports that he has signed up for a leading role in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars Episode VII. It's now become hard to tell whether he's becoming frustrated with denying the rumours or just isn't trying as hard as he did with Khan, but at this point it still seems as if he's at least open to the idea! "I don't know. Who knows, who knows? Nothing is known of that. I worked with J.J. [Abrams, who directed Star Trek Into Darkness and now is prepping Episode VII]. Obviously, he knows. Everyone who wants to be part of that film, they know about." As for whether that movie really does have anything to do with why he dropped out of Crimson Peak, he added: "Absolutely not. No, no, no, no. That was nothing to do with it at all. [It was] between me and Guillermo, to be honest. It was amicable, and that's all I'm going to say." I guess he saw Pacific Rim! Anyway, the actor once again expresses his interest in taking on a role in Star Wars Episode VII and reiterates that the movie had nothing to do with his decision for walking away from Guillermo del Toro's upcoming horror movie in the following video interview with MTV News.

With his current fan base, alongside the fact that he is interested in it, Disney would be foolish not to pursue him. I just don't want him to be cast as the Star Wars version of his Into Darkness performance, which IF he is offered anything, would seem likely. I would much rather see him on the side of the protagonists.

Pacific Rim sucked. Del Toro is not a good director, or writer. He makes cool monsters and creatures, and is an FX guy. Doesn't make u a good director.

In my honest opinion...and this is just my own personal thoughts on the matter...Del Toro is a great visual director but his movies always lack heart.

There is 'implied' heart, but it's always so hollow.

As a Hellboy fan I loved how the movies looked but they all felt empty.

It was even MORE apparent in Pacific Rim where we were shown moments that were supposed to be emotional but due to the pacing and lack of development I couldn't feel anything for any of the characters.

Still looked cool as hell though.

I disagree about Hellboy lacking heart in the films.

Pan's Labyrinth lacked heart?! I respectfully disagree. :)

Also while I don't think Pacific Rim is a great movie - seriously, Josh...? -_-'

@Humperdink:

Del Toro not have heart?

The Devils Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth are both gut-wrenching and heartbreaking films made by a genuine visionary.

His best films are in his native tongue.

I'd like to see Cumberbatch in Star Wars as a badass Bounty Hunter... I was impressed with his performance in STID but felt he was underutilized and would be great if he returned in the third film.

Benedict would make a great bounty hunter imo! And dont necessarily follow the expanded universe. Do an original story!

So, my understanding of Cumberbatch's comments are that he has been cast as a Sith Lord for the entirety of the sequel trilogy. I'm glad that's cleared up.

Two of his very best.
I think they were the most successful films he's done.

Everything else has been 'okay'.

I have to agree that Del Toro hasn't made good films. They often look incredible, but they just aren't good. This rings true with Pacific Rim. While I don't like the jab in an article that's supposed to be a report about the news, I can't deny the fact that Del Toro's films have never been very good films, just refreshing and interesting to look at.

I think the Star Wars films won't be good and won't be aimed at us anyways (anyone over 20ish). With Disney behind them, it's likely that it will be aimed at 12-18 year olds. They know that fans will go see them no matter what, and they want a new generation to jump on the bandwagon, it only makes sense.

It does seem like Benedict is being cryptic in his response about leaving the film, I'm fine with it not being for Star Wars, but saying "it's amicable" usually means it wasn't.
