George Lucas Talks More About His Post STAR WARS Plans And EPISODE VII Involvement

Despite being named as a creative consultant on Disney's Star Wars: Episode VII, George Lucas has downplayed his involvement with the new trilogy and also comments on his plans to continue making movies...just not ones you're likely to see in the theater!

Entertainment Weekly were able to catch up with George Lucas at Ebony magazine's Power 100 Gala on Friday, and while the Star Wars creator has already released numerous statements about selling LucasFilm to Disney, they did ask him just how involved he will be in the hiring of a director for Episode VII. His answer? A fairly non-committal one! "I’ve turned it over to a wonderful producer, Kathy Kennedy, and I’ve known her for years," he said. "She’s more than capable of taking it and making it better than I did."

"It's very sad," Lucas added about his decision to sell his company. "It's 40 years of work and it’s been my life, but I’m ready to move on to bigger and better things." And what are those bigger and better things? Well, he'll be spending the majority of his time dealing with his charitable endeavours, but that doesn't mean that filmmaking it completely in his past. "Mostly it will be philanthropy but I’m also going to make my own little personal films. I barely got Red Tails into the theaters. The ones I’m working on now will never get into the theaters." What would you like to see Lucas do next? Comment in the usual place!

Good for him. Glad he's able to do what he wants but also glad Star Wars won't stagnate.

I'm really happy for him.
He gets to see his legacy continue, the employees at LucasFilm have a secure future at Disney, and most of the money he made from the sale he's giving to charity. He's a complete class act, and you know what? Despite constant complaining from the fans, he never compromised in what -he- wanted to do with his creation. He gave me some of my absolute favorite childhood memories with Star Wars and Indiana Jones, (I even liked the prequels and KOTCS), and I wish him the best of luck with the smaller films he plans to make next. Even if they won't be in theaters, I'd love to have a chance to see them.

Bowing out with grace? Well, maybe a decade or so too late for dignity but at least he's moving on to that last phase of trying to help the world.

@Viltrumite: Very well said! The prequels were not as good as they could have been but at the same time I admire GL for not compromising HIS creation. So many filmmakers pander to the millions of whiny fans that want movies done THEIR way in order to maximize box office numbers while Lucas had the stones to say "I don't care, I'm making the movies they way I imagined them because they're MINE and I created them". I can respect that.

1: U-turn on the Disney deal and sell Lucasfilm to Spielberg instead.

2: Give away all your money!

3: Die!

Disrespectful? Pretty sure millions of people spending $700 million+ around 1977, also had something to do with its success

And they feel disrespected too..

He needs to have little to no further involvement with Star Wars. The franchise has developed a life of it's own and any input from him at this point would only serve to further damage it's potential. You've [frick]ed it up enough George. Bail dude.

I've been saying for years, we need a live action Star Wars series. Star Trek did it. Star Wars has waaaay more potential.

I think we need to respect Lucas More even though he did the prequels we have to respect him for creating a world we know and love and have respect for the material.. Rather than saying "Thank God his gone now we can have good Star Wars Movies" he did create the original Star Wars universe after all.. Just saying

Calling him a talentless hack for someone that gave us the Star Wars franchise just because the prequels were not up to your standard does not mean you should insult and disrespect him @mctrinket
Have respect for George Lucas as a true Star Wars fan insulting him won't get you anywhere or make you sound cooler just makes you look retarded

Lucas imasculated Vader and Han Solo while giving us Jar Jar Bunks and ewoks and all manner of other unforgivableness....he needs to stay far away.

What was the problem with the prequels they weren't that bad. If he would have just made sequels people wouldn't have freaked out so much about Little Vader. I've watched a little bit of the cartoon & if they can make a live action film on that level it will be great.

Best scenario for everyone. Lucas suggests virtual non involvement in future Star Wars films while he goes all Andrew Carnegie and becomes a philantropist. Well played George. You're gonna make a lot of people happy.

People are always bashing George Lucas for the new Star Wars, which are pretty good. Of course they didn't live up to the original. Nothing ever will. Star Wars is his vision and always will be. For those who claim to hate the new Star Wars here is a solution. Get over it. Star Wars is meant for a wider audience than just the Hard Core fans. The Movies, Cartoon, Games are all good. You are the same people who got mad at X-Men Last Stand because the Juggernaut was a mutant. I love Star Wars ever since I could remember and it is all Good. Even the Ewok adventures!!!!
