Jon Favreau Reportedly Pursuing STAR WARS: EPISODE VII; David Fincher In The Mix?

Iron Man director Jon Favreau is reportedly "panting after" the coveted job of helming Star Wars: Episode VII, which is targeting a 2015 release. Additionally, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo's David Fincher may be game for an installment in the new trilogy.

Ever since Disney have announced that they will release a new Star Wars trilogy last month, rumors have been overflowing the internet. Perhaps the most popular one is the director for Episode VII, which is currently being targeted for a 2015 theatrical release. The biggest rumor going around right now is that X-Men: First Class helmer Matthew Vaughn is set to direct the film, but has yet to be officially confirmed or denied. Another heavily speculated candidate is Iron Man's Jon Favreau, who recently expressed his excitement for the new trilogy. According to Deadline, Favreau is "panting after" the highly coveted gig. The choice makes sense, as the director is a big Star Wars fan and helped launch one of Disney's biggest franchises in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Personally, Favreau would be my top choice for the job if Vaughn doesn't get it.

Additionally, Deadline say that David Fincher (Fight Club, The Social Network) "might be game" to direct one of these new Star Wars films. This choice also makes sense, due to the director's prior relationship with LucasFilm. Fincher is also attached to helm Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, which the studio are currently deciding whether or not to greenlight.

Interestingly, Disney studio chairman Alan Horn recently spoke with Vulture about the secrecy of the studio's LucasFilm purchase, and he also discusses when we can expect the director of Star Wars: Episode VII to be announced. "I would say you'll know soon. And it's got to come from Kathy Kennedy — we don't have the company yet!" He also refused to comment on the Matthew Vaughn rumors.

In the meantime, Episode VII is currently being written by Michael Ardnt (Toy Story 3). Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days Of Future Past) recently signed on to pen the screenplays for two more Star Wars films, which are said to be spin-offs and not a part of the main series.

Fincher should let Favs direct episode 7. He's gonna be too busy directing 'The Goon' anyway

I think Jon Favreau can do a much better job than Matthew Vaughn could! Iron Man 1 was awesome and let's be honest Iron Man 2''s problems were the screenwriter fault not his! Cowboys and Aliens was very enjoyable! I hope Jon gets in and not Vaughn!

It would've been awesome if Spielberg directed a Star Wars film in the 80s, when he wanted to do it.

I won't watch another Affleck film because Argo was so historically accurate is bordered on racism. Michael Bay has a lot of haters for good reason but from a technical point of view he is one of the most gifted film makers around. Let Favreau do episode 7 fincher 8 and Darren Aronofsky do 9

Yes!!!!! Give Fincher episode 8!!! Let this be the Empire of the new trilogy, the darker film out of the 3. He would crush that sh!t. Let Kasdan write it too. I can't think of a film more perfect. Make it happen!!

And while Vaughn would do a terrific job, I think Favs has this one locked up. He s got a solid relationship with Disney/Marvel from Iron Man and that Magic Kingdom flick he s been working on for a long time. I d be surprised if he didn't get it. He 'll do a fine job with Arndt's script.

Favreau is kind of hit and miss, but I think he might be a good choice. Fincher would be good too.

Darren Aronofsky would be cool but he'd have to direct episode 8 or 9 I doubt he'll have time for 7. Although IMHO Disney and Lucasfilm should sign a diretor with a 3 movie deal. He should do all 3 movies and not just 1 or 2. I hate it when they switch directors and a movie might suffer from that. Andrew Stanton would also be a very good choice John Carter was VERY underrated and was a very good film!Boba Fett's Daddy Joe Johnston could do it he worked on the original trilogy! Heck I'd give Ron Howard a shot! The problem with Vaughn is that even though I LOVED X-Men: First Class I felt it was more of a mature film and lacked ''heart''. He's good at doing more adult orientated films which is ok but not for Star Wars I'm betting on Favreau or maybe another director heck even Neil Blomkamp if he keeps the blood to a minimum!

@Ironpatriot-how do you figure? How is it that the director is "just as responsible" as anyone else as far as the quality goes? I completely disagree with that. I'll pick another director from this article to help prove my point, David Fincher:

Alien 3. Due to way too much studio involvement, Fincher reportedly walked away from the film towards the end. Alien 3, admittedly, is a good film as far as being an 'interesting' chapter to the Alien franchise. But, DUE to the studio's heavy handed involvement, the film did very poorly at the box-office. Because Aliens was such a HUGE hit, the studio couldn't let well enough alone and just let Fincher make his movie. If they had, and it was failure, THEN, it's his baby.

Fav had the same issues with Iron Man 2. Due to the huge success of Iron Man, execs had to "butt in" and run the show so much that Fav refused to have anything more to do with the Iron Man franchise as far as directing goes. Again, not a 'bad' film by any means, but when compared to the first, most were severely disappointed.

Back to the article. Jon Fav is definitely MY pick for this! As with Empire, I think Fincher would be excellent for Episode VIII, maybe bring a darker tone to it. But for this initial outing, Fav has the capability to bring the right amount of humor, drama and action without stuffing it with so much filler and political drama (which, in my opinion, along with horrid acting and way too much cgi, was the prequels' downfall).

I thought Favreau left Iron Man so he could direct Fantasia or something like that? Did it just not happen or did he already do it or somethin
