David Fincher On His Vision For SPIDER-MAN; Reveals He Would Have "Killed Gwen Stacy"

The man who will be bringing us his Girl With The Dragon Tattoo very soon was in line to reboot the Spider-Man franchise before Marc Webb landed the gig. Fincher reveals his ideas and openings sequence to io9..

Remeber back in January when David Fincher was one of the names thrown around to take teh reigns from Sam Raimi on the Spider-Man franchise? I think most felt that this was just speculation, and that maybe Fincher was just being sought for the job or something. Well it turns out that the man behind such incredible movies as Fight Club and Seven was a lot closer to accepting directing duties than we may have thought. Speaking exclusively to io9 he reveals what would have been his opening sequence for the movie, as well as an iconic moment from the comics that would have also made the cut..

My impression what Spider-Man could be is very different from what Sam [Raimi] did or what Sam wanted to do. I think the reason he directed that movie was because he wanted to do the Marvel comic superhero. I was never interested in the genesis story. I couldn't get past a guy getting bit by a red and blue spider. It was just a problem… It was not something that I felt I could do straight-faced. I wanted to start with Gwen Stacy and the Green Goblin, and I wanted to kill Gwen Stacy.

The title sequence of the movie that I was going to do was going to be a ten minute — basically a music video, an opera, which was going to be the one shot that took you through the entire Peter Parker [backstory]. Bit by a radio active spider, the death of Uncle Ben, the loss of Mary Jane, and [then the movie] was going to begin with Peter meeting Gwen Stacy. It was a very different thing, it wasn't the teenager story. It was much more of the guy who's settled into being a freak.

I'm sure there will be a few purists that don't like that bit about not doing the "Marvel comics Super-hero" story, but Fincher is one of my favorite directors so regardless of what changes he would have made, I would have loved to see his take. How bout you guys? Was Webb the right man for the job or would you have preferred Fincher?

If Fincher were to do the Batman reboot, he would be perfect for doing a proper big screen adaptation of The Riddler!

I'd like Gwen to get killed sometime in a movie by GG, but the way he said he would do it doesn't interest me. MJ shouldn't leave him first, I would do this scene at the end of the movie to almost the exact panels:

And he could be a young man. No prob with that.

As much as I love Fincher (one of my top five favorite directors), this sounds like a horrible idea. However, I do agree he should do the Batman reboot/reinvention with the Riddler as villain. I could definitely see that working.

I'm glad that we're getting this awesome new reboot, but I know for a fact that a David Fincher Spider-Man film would've been absolutely incredible. Have you guys seen 'The Social Network' or 'Fight Club'? The guy's a genius

@RunDTC

I could definitely see him doing that. Especially with his crime-drama background, we'd see more of the "Worlds Greatest Detective" doing detective type of work. Plus he'd be able to keep the dark and gritty tone that Nolan has built up. So, good idea man.

Marvel would never allow directors like Fincher because they're terrified of directors with any kind of creative control, its much safer and easier to hire a dude whos gonna pump out the exact movie you want to rake in the dough.

Fincher>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Webb

You fanboys call Fincher overrated but you're excited about a movie directed by the guy who did..."500 Days of Summer"...And nothing else.

Riiiiight.

Compare the 2 resumes and then get back to me.

Seriously, Raimi did a great job introducing SM to the world. #1 was very good, and # 2 was great, IMO the best CBM ever thus far. #3 was projectile vomit.

Pete's too precious to be fu**** with by studio suits, that's what pisses me off most. He's a cultural icon and deserves the UTMOST respect.
One of the reason's why I don't like the re-boot route.

I'd rather have a dark tone then a Twilight-emo vibe. Sorry but that's just what TASM is giving off...The blindly loyal Marvel/Spider-Man fans may be able to accept that and be in denial over it, but it just looks so shitty to me.

The Edward and Bella vibe, the shitty rubber Dodgeball textured, Nike Shox outfit, the street hip hop Spidey outfit where he looks like Eminem from 8Mile, the sad depressed emo kid on a skateboard vibe, the lizard looking like a Goomba from the Mario Bros movie...just...no.

Sorry but the social network is one of the most boring films i have ever seen its all useless dribble bollocks, fight club is only good because of ed norton. Everything this bloke does is rubbish!

He is best known for that style, but he is well talented enough to adapt. Curious Case Of Benjamin Button being a prime example..now I personally wasn't crazy about that movie, but there is no doubt it was very diff from his other pitch black stuff. Anyway Webb seems to be going much darker too.

guys like Fincher,Aronofsky,Tarantino could never do super hero films

then would'nt follow the source material because it would'nt suit their vision of what they want the movie to be

trust me many comic fans would be mad

I really like David Fincher. Social Network was great, Fight Club, Zodiac... His version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will probably be awesome too. However, I like what I'm hearing about Marc Webb's Spider-man more than the brief description that Fincher just gave. He doesn't seem to really embrace the character.

Depending on how the Spidey verse is set up, the franchise might be a good fit for him to do a sequel. Someone mentioned Kraven's Last Hunt earlier. I can see Fincher wanting to do a film on that.
