Most of you fanboys who stuck around to see if there was a sting at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man saw what Marc Webb decided to leave us with. It wasn't as clear and obvious like the sting left for us at the end of The Avengers, and it's too soon to start jumping to conclusions, but it is early enough for us to come up with a few assumptions.
After seeing Spider-Man I jumped online and went to my local comic book store [props to Visions of Comics and Cards] to see what people were saying about the sting, and some of the things I read and heard while talking to others were just bizarre. Mysterio? Doctor Octopus? I just don't even see how those names even came up. All we were left with was Dr. Connors sitting in his cell seeing him being visited by a dark older looking fellow in a coat.
The first impression I had was that Dr. Connors was confronted by Maxwell Dillon, an electrical engineer who was turned into Electro resulting from a freak accident on the power line transformer. It seemed to be the most logical villain. No one was in the cell when Dr. Connors was contained, all of a sudden lightning flashed and the stranger was in the cell with him, asking if Curtis Connors had told Peter anything about his father. After the 15 second conversation lightning flashed again and the stranger was gone. Electro was the first thing that came to my mind but then my brain wouldn't let go of the thought that we didn't get to see Norman Osborn at all during the movie. Just a blacked out billboard with an ant's eye view of his face.
This is when I started contemplating that the man in the cell was in fact Norman Osborn. It seemed like it was an older gentlemen who wasn't at the peek of health and the movie led us on to know that Norman Osborn is dying. Electro wasn't an older sickly man, but at the same time I don't want to throw out the idea of this next villain being Electro. There was an interview with Emma Stone several months ago saying that she was studying the Death of the Stacys series to study her role as Gwen Stacy. Which of course leads us all to wonder, will they kill Gwen in this upcoming trilogy? Those who read the original Amazing Spider-Man know that the Green Goblin was responsible for the death of Gwen, now if they do kill Gwen do you think that they'd do it as soon as the second movie leaving room for Mary Jane Watson to make a return? Or will they wait till the third movie to reboot the Green Goblin? Will they even use the Green Goblin? Or are the rumors of the Proto Goblin true?
As much faith I have that Marc Webb will just keep up the good work in making Spider-Man more like Spider-Man, I have a slight fear that he'll use someone else to kill Gwen. I hope that's not the case. Yes I know that the Lizard wasn't the original murderer of Captain Stacy, it was Doctor Octopus, but the murder of Gwen's father was only a stepping stone to the most traumatizing turn of events for young Peter Parker's life. I was completely fine with the Lizard being responsible, but I just don't see how I'd handle seeing Gwen die by the hands of anyone other than the Green Goblin.
So who would you like to see in The Amazing Spider-Man sequel? Who was the stranger in the cell? And will Gwen Stacy die in these next 2 movies? Comment below and let me know what you guys think. Thanks for reading!
