SPIDER-MAN 4: Marvel Studios Rumored To Be Eyeing GODZILLA x KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE Helmer To Direct

Following reports that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire helmer Adam Wingard is moving on from the MonsterVerse, a new rumour claims he's among the filmmakers being eyed for Spider-Man 4. Check it out...

Earlier this week, we learned that Adam Wingard will no longer direct the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sequel. He previously helmed Godzilla vs. Kong, but cut his teeth on smaller action movies like You're Next and The Guest

Today, we bring word from scooper @MyTimeToShineH that Wingard is in the running to helm Spider-Man 4 for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.

His potential hiring would almost certainly divide opinions, though it's worth noting that Wingard currently has plans to helm a new action thriller, Onslaught, which is prepping for a fall shoot. That alone likely takes him out of the running.

The director also seems far more interested in finally bringing Thundercats to the big screen.

"Simon [Barrett] and I are still actively working on the script," he said earlier this year. "We finished our last draft basically right when I was going into production on [Godzilla x Kong] and we just had to put everything on hold. [But] right now we’re actively working on it again."

"So whether that means that’s the next thing I do or [not], I’m not sure. But it’s definitely one of the top priorities I have right now in terms of working on a script."

We'll see what happens, but Spider-Man 4 does appear to be a priority for Sony Pictures. Venom is now rumoured to make an appearance, while a recent rumour even claimed that an unexpected character will also return in the movie

"The simple answer is that I’ll always want to do Spider-Man films," Tom Holland has said of where things stand with Spider-Man 4"I owe my life and career to Spider-Man. So the simple answer is yes. I’ll always want to do more."

"We have the best in the business working toward whatever the story might be. But until we’ve cracked it, we have a legacy to protect," the actor explained. "The third movie was so special in so many ways that we need to make sure we do the right thing."

"This is the first time in this process that I’ve been part of the creative so early. It’s just a process where I’m watching and learning. It’s just a really fun stage for me," he added. "Like I said, everyone wants it to happen. But we want to make sure we’re not overdoing the same things."

Alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya is expected to reprise her role as MJ in Spider-Man 4. Sydney Sweeny is rumoured to be playing Black Cat, and we're expecting Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Paul Rudd to appear as Daredevil, The Kingpin, and Ant-Man.

As for who could direct Spider-Man 4, plenty of names are floating around online. Among them are Justin Lin, Drew Goddard, and Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Now, we can tentatively add Wingard's name to the list.

The movie doesn't currently have a release date.

Loved that movie despite people trying their darndest to bury it under Godzilla Minus One. Loved both movies and want more of BOTH!
I welcome this guy for spiderman. I never thought following a movie's plot through the eyes of a massive ape who can't talk, would be possible. But he showed true emotion with Kong and also great action. The movie was coherent and fun even through the no gravity sequences. This guy can do it all

Give him spiderman

@Vigor - even though I felt both his Monsterverse films were just ok , I do agree with you though

His monster action was probably my favorite so far and I liked him “humanizing” Kong to an extent aswell

Even his human stuff I thought was fine overall haha.

I do think this won’t happen though since dudes got a atleast 3-4 projects in the works (and I badly want to see his Thundercats movie soon).

@TheVisionary25 - I'm super hype for a Thundercats!

@Vigor - same man

Just seeing his work on the Monsterverse , dude could really capture that colorful 80’s vibe of the original show.

@TheVisionary25 - they were okay but they were arguably what the Monsterverse was building to and needed. I don't know how much of that to put on him and how much to attribute to all the groundwork done in general but I was also down to see what he could do given another go.
Hopefully they try something different and they can join up again later. By that I both mean Wingard and Monsterverse as well as Godzilla and Kong's plotlines/appearances

@Slotherin - I agree

I think it’s both , he certainly gave more humanity to Kong and also expanded the mythos with Hollow Earth etc

So we definitely are not getting a smaller, more personal, street level story are we?

@mountainman - it'll turn out there are a bunch of spider people underground and spiderman and Ben Reilly have to fight an ancient spider person with a whip from causing the next ice age.

@mountainman - you think it's possible to have street level but not small ?
I think it would be difficult but possible

The rumored plot from the other day is street level but also sounds like a huge deal for Spidey on a personal standpoint but also majorly impacts new York city

@Vigor - I only say small compared to world or multiverse level threats. I’m sure it won’t be what I classify as small.

Just going by the 2 Godzilla and Kong movies, this guy seems more focused on big spectacle than any story or character work.

@Origame - When it comes to Sony, I’d never be surprised at what idiotic idea they try next.

Seriously a Spider-man 4 were he is on his own, struggling to make ends meet, it has a darker tone, features Black Cat and Daredevil, Kingpin as villain with multiple “goons” such as Scorpion, Shocker, Hammerhead, etc seems like a slam dunk.

But Sony is probably going to be stupid and go bigger than No Way Home on this.

@mountainman -

If they hadn't shelved ASM3 and release this after Spider-Verse3, they could bring in FOUR Spider-Mans and make it their shared 4th film.

@mountainman - eh. It'll be as much marvel as it is Sony. They made an ant man movie on the scale of an avengers movie, and are giving us galactus as the first fantastic four villain.

@Origame - I get it. Neither studio seems to do grounded or smaller scale these days.

They even took Shang Chi from the mostly awesome martial arts movie it was in the first two acts to the giant CGI army battle in the third act which brought it down a lot.

Quantumania was one of the worst MCU movies of all time. The first two Ant Man movies didn’t blow my socks off, but they were far better than that mess. And they really destroyed their saga big bad in that one too.

Both studios think that bigger is always better. And it’s sad. They could create some big projects and some smaller ones. Give the audience some different flavors. But no, it all has to shove a ton of characters in and make every movie a world ending threat. It’s tiring.

@mountainman -

I wish. I wish it was Spider-Man, DD, black carbs Kingpin and then tease the next avengers film or something about the multiverse. Heck, Toby maguire himself could show up in an after credits scene for all I care.

of those listed above, Goddard is by far the best choice, imo. At this point, no one knows anything

Funny how couple of days or so after he decided to not do the third Godzilla/Kong film , this “rumor” comes up…

Anyway , I wouldn’t be surprised if he is under consideration to direct this aswell as other choices that we have heard about but nothing has been decided as of yet.

Anyway , I don’t really see him fitting Spidey but wouldn’t mind him doing another Marvel character in the future such as Ghost Rider or even Midnight Sons (could even utilize some of his horror background for it).
