Spider-Man Reboot Is Risky, Says David Fincher

David Fincher talks about the Spider-Man reboot in this MTV interview

Earlier this year, director David Fincher was reportedly on Sony's shortlist to direct the "Spider-Man" reboot, alongside fellow filmmakers Wes Anderson ("Rushmore"), and Marc Webb ("500 Days of Summer"), who eventually got the job.

Although he won't be directing the reboot, Fincher told MTV News that while he feels that the reboot is exciting, it also carries some drawbacks as well. Check out the interview below.

"It's risky," offered Fincher. "They're taking some risks. It's not like they're getting a conventional director. They're going at it in a different way... They're rolling the dice. I think that's always exciting."

"I took a meeting and I easily got myself out of that one,"
related Fincher. "I've never been interested in superhero movies. I just could not imagine someone getting bitten by a radioactive spider."

"I can't imagine Garfield in spandex, I can't imagine his being comfortable," said Fincher. "He's a wonderful actor, he's incredibly skilled and empathic and a lovely guy. So it's nice to see that."

"I took a meeting and I easily got myself out of that one".

Sounds like he was relieved to not be a part if the project.

isn't everyone comfortable in spandex?

Ha! I think Fincher is a great director but I really hate it when they go on about not being able to imagine fantasy elements in a movie. So a guy being bitten by a radioactive spider is beyond you, but an alien chasing people around a futuristic space prison is fine is it?

i think zack snyder & adapt frank millers the dark knight returns.

Obviously it's risky. So was Watchmen, Iron Man, and the Superman reboot will be too. It sucks that he said he's not interested in superhero films though. He'd make an awesome Deadpool movie IMO :(

Now all the "[frick] the reboot" guys are going to jump all over his comment about getting himself out of the job. Ugh.

Bwahahahhahahaa....

[frick] the REBOOT!

: P

Seriously [frick] it and WEBB and all the Ultimites with cherries on top! : D

A SPIDER-MAN CONTINUATION REBOOT is the only way to go, not go back to day one, hasn't been long enough, JOE PUBLIC will get bored....

SPIDEY 4 ppl!

Only thing needs REBOOTING is crappy X-MEN!

Yeah, didn't like X3 much, though Magento levitating the Golden Gate Bridge was brilliant (CGI wise, at least in my opinion). Cyclops could have blasted Jean Grey, at the final showdown. Now that would have been interesting, but they went and killed off Cyclops in the beginning.

Where was the xenophobia etc? They touched on that in X-Men and then hardly expanded on it in any of the sequels.

they need slam on the breaks with this movie...with Reboots in general. I have zero faith in any of them, save Superman. I mean let's be honest who really wants to see Sony or Fox over saturate the market for CBMs even more. To be honest the only thing that is keeping them viable at this point is the Avengers line, and adaptations of smaller comics like Scott Pilgram and Kick-Ass.

With regards to big budget flicks, GL is a wild card if you ask me, if it does well (which I think it will) maybe i'll reconsider this statement. But as for reboots of Spidey and the X-men, I just can't see regular people watching these reboots after paying good money to watch Spiderman 3 and X-men 3 (and Wolverine). Those flicks just killed those franchizes for a long while.

But that's just one man's opinion

He used to be a fan fav for a Daredevil movie. I liked him until he started The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which was already made last year.

Its funny how the guy who can imagine someone aging backwards cant imagine someone getting bitten by a radioactive spider. Lol. I think hes just bitter. But I wish he changed his mind about superheroes and direct a Daredevil reboot!! A Rated-R Daredevil by him would be awesome!!

SPOILER:
Also, Benjamin Button was good. Kinda boring at times but still good. :) I just never understood the ending when he ended up as a baby. I mean I know he was going to but I didnt understand why he became an actual small-sized baby. Like he lost all that body mass? I was expecting a giant human sized baby. Haha. I mean its not like he came out of his moms pussy as an old adult-sized man also. Ouch! Haha. Just saying.

This is deemed to FAIL as well as X Men. This fool is lacking the enthusiasm necessary to pull of a successful CBM. Fantastic 4 is questionable. That has the potential of success, but it is being run my Fox so it's an obvious FAIL. Sony and Fox are a bunch of idiots.......

david fincher is a more realistic type director there was a reason he was once attached to watchmen that would be his ball park of super hero movies

david fincher could probably do dare devil with his crime dram elements and realistic dark tone

spider-man is no that great of a character, he was even worse when portrayed by tobey maguire! a reboot may be good, i believe the focus should be on other marvel characters not spider-man.

dancingmonkey08 - 8/19/2010, 12:10 PM
Damn right LEEE, wouldnt it make sense to be a continuation because the movie is even going to be in college (rather than high school originally) right where Peter was in Spidey 3! Just continue on and use new villains rather than a bloody reboot!

LEEE, how would you feel to a Spidey reboot by Marvel Studios which followed the original comics and set the first trilogy completely in high school and then the next one in college. I would love this but only if Marvel Studios did it (with easter eggs referencing the Avengers)

I liked the original spiderman trilogy and the only person I felt they should've replaced was Kirsten Dunst because she isn't as good as the other actors but I'll see how it goes, don't think they can top it with an actor who is too tall to be Spiderman.

i don't get why all of ya are getting mad at sony doing a Ultimites spiderman movie, if ya haven't seen marvel is doing a Ultimites avengers, hulk, ironman, captain America and Thor but no one complains about that. ya just complain about spiderman reboot being like the Ultimites comics.
