David Goyer Says A MAN OF STEEL Sequel Depends On The Next Two Weeks At The Box Office

Talking at last night's European premiere of Man of Steel in London, screenwriter David Goyer addressed those recent reports that a sequel has already been given the greenlight and says that while they do have some ideas, it all depends on the all important box office results.

Unfortunately, Man of Steel hasn't received the overwhelmingly positive reaction from critics that many expected (it currently has 60% on Rotten Tomatoes and 55 on Metacritic), but it was still reported this week that Warner Bros. were moving ahead with a sequel which would reunite director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David Goyer. Talking at the European premiere of the movie yesterday, the latter was asked to comment on these reports and said that despite having some ideas for a follow-up, it will all depend on how well the reboot performs at the worldwide box office. "I'm under lock and key, but it would be disingenuous to say we didn't [have ideas]. A lot is going to depend on this weekend and next weekend. We certainly are hoping for a sequel." A couple of weeks ago, it was reported that Man of Steel had already made back its production budget thanks to its many sponsors, so chances are it will indeed do well enough to ensure a sequel. What do you guys think? Be sure to sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question 'Why am I here?' Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world’s beacon of hope – Superman.

"He's not the big blue Boy Scout. He's still a hero, but he's a hero for the 21st Century."

That's what I am talking about, yes Superman is supposed to the all American hero and have all this morals and what not, but people have to realize that this does not just happen over night. He has to learn lessons and be giving a reason to be come the hero every one know and loves. This whole movie is about him becoming that hero.

WB needs to just commit to the concept and continue the work. The film is going to be successful and the execs need to have more balls and faith. Just make the damn Justice League already.

@PantherX: You never could. They just give their thoughts on the film and it's up to the audience whether they choose to still see the film or not.

So the final take does not matter just 2 weeks of results?
Horseshit. This movie will get a sequel & hopefully more DC Universe characters will get onscreen.

ATTENTION: CRITICS ARE NOTHING! THEY DO NOTHING! THERE OPINIONS ARE NOTHING! JUDGE MOVIES FOR YOURESLF.

@sameoldthing: Is that right? So, if Man of Steel had a 9% on Rotten Tomatoes and all the reviewers said it was utter crap, you'd ignore them and go see it? That has zero affect on you?

While I am inclined to blame the choices made on Nolan due to the Nolanized Superman that's been created, I strongly recommend that Goyer be removed from this project. I don't think he understood the character properply, and seeing from his background - it would make sense that he doesn't work for Superman.

@Nenured: So, you saw Catwoman in the theaters, correct? The critics be damned.

When the majority of negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes come from outlets I've never even heard of - Tucson Weekly? The Patriot Ledger? Dallas Morning News? - I also don't think it's worth paying too much attention to that 60% score. The big, well-respected sites like Empire, The Hollywood Reporter and USA Today have all praised it.

I feel a lot of critics probably were always going to react negatively to anything different than the reeves version that's so firmly planted in their minds.

Unlike Thor, Iron Man, and Cap, everyone has an opinion about superman and how a Supes movie should be. Nobody knew the above except real comic fans and werent expecting anything going into the movie. Superman is a household name and is a part of our culture, of course e is getting mixed reviews, there is no way in hell you can make a superman movie everyone will like. Doesn't mean it's a bad movie, looks pretty good to me. Critics have an opinion, and that's it. I'm gonna form my own opinion here in about 12 hours.

why should we trust sites that praise movies that essentially bastardize our favorite characters (exp: Iron Man 3, Superman Returns)

WB have low confidence in their properties, neither Thor nor Captain America made huge money and both are having sequels.

Saw movie, its like transformers 3 but with bad cgi.
Man of Steel had last 50 min non stopping action.
Movie had no story, bad cgi, and too much action.

Wow. Rotten Tomatoes this, Rotten Tomatoes that. Relax about it. Didn't the last Transformers get a 27% or something and it still made like a jillion dollars. At the end of the day it don't matter what critics or die hard fans think. It matters what everyone thinks. Just go see it, judge for yourselves and stop looking for people to blame before you've even seen it.

I'm going to see MOS tonight and then tomorrow in 3D. It is kind of funny that some of the reviews from better known sources aren't posted on Tomates Pudridos. Does not matter I make up my own mind. This is a comic book and Superman fans dream in the end we decide its success. MOS ftw! Long live Superman.

It doesn't matter what critics think, as long as it rakes in the dough which I'd be shocked if it didn't they'll be a sequel. Now as to what I've been hearing they don't like how dark it is, which I guess I get. But I like a little edge to my CBM. Superman doesn't have to go all Dark Knight, but it could use a little edge.
