Yesterday evening, the news broke that James Gunn's Superman: Legacy has cast David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan will play Superman and Lois Lane, respectively.
They now replace DCEU actors Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, and the response has thus far been largely positive. Brosnahan is an Emmy-winning proven talent in front of the camera, while Corenswet certainly appears to have all the desired attributes to bring the Man of Steel to life on screen.
Not everyone is happy with the news, of course, and that was particularly the case among #RestoreTheSnyderVerse supporters.
Upset with how Henry Cavill was ousted from the role after Black Adam's mid-credits scene, they took to Twitter last night to get #HenryCavillIsSuperman and #BringBackHenryCavill trending.
Needless to say, we don't expect DC Studios to take note!
When Dwayne Johnson pushed for Cavill to be brought back into the fold as Superman, the idea was that he would eventually take centre stage alongside Black Adam in a sequel to the anti-hero's movie. Prior to that, we'd have seen him in The Flash's closing moments and a long-awaited Man of Steel follow-up.
Gunn and Safran decided a fresh start was needed, hence why we have a new Superman in the DCU.
The backlash from the DCEU and SnyderVerse faithful is something Gunn will likely have to contend with for years to come. While it's hard to imagine any comic book fan yearning for the glory days of Suicide Squad, Black Adam, and The Flash, there are those who remain resolute that Zack Snyder should return to fulfil his vision.
"Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas," reads the movie's synopsis. "He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned."
Superman: Legacy is set to be released in theaters on July 11. 2025.
