SUPERMAN: LEGACY Director James Gunn Confirms Movie Will Make Original Release Date

The SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes caused ructions in Hollywood, and led to several major upcoming comic book movies being delayed. Marvel Studios recently pushed most of its 2024 slate to 2025, and there was speculation that Warner Bros./DC Studios may follow suit with the first official DCU film.

Fortunately, Superman: Legacy will be flying into theaters on July 11, 2025 as originally scheduled.

Director James Gunn took to social media to share the news, praising the efforts of his production staff and crew members for managing to forge ahead on the project when writing and pre-production work from the actors involved was prohibited.

"Thanks to the efforts of our talented crew, who never lost faith during the longest strikes in Hollywood history, and who never let their foot off the pedal, continuing to barrel forward, creating the most amazing character and set designs I’ve seen in my entire career, #SupermanLegacy will be making the originally planned release date of July 11, 2025."

Gunn attached a promo poster with the date, but it doesn't appear to be official artwork for the movie.

In addition to David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Legacy will feature Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

We're still not sure exactly how these four superheroes will factor into the story, but Gunn has previously revealed that Superman's dual-life as both Clark Kent and the Man of Steel will be explored in the film, suggesting that these characters will be his "super friends." Whether they'll be part of an actual team or not remains to be seen.

“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world," said Gunn during the DCU slate announcement. "I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”

Casting is currently underway for Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen and Perry White, and now that the strikes are over, announcements may be forthcoming.

The Righteous Gemstones actor Skyler Gisondo was recently rumored to be a "top choice" to play Jimmy, while brothers Alexander and Bill Skarsgård are said to have tested for Luthor along with one-time Superman candidate Nicholas Hoult. Gunn has yet to weigh in on any of these reports, however.

Production is scheduled to commence next January.

@Doomsday8888 - Ha! And so it begins! You know while the new52 was mainly a rough ride, toward the end of its run Superman has some pretty decent comics.

The main concern for this movie in terms of its quality is that James Gunn has primarily relied on the team-up dynamic lately and it's debatable as to whether he'd be able to focus the script onto Clark/Superman as a character and explore him instead of just shoving in other superhero characters to support him.

Outside of that, it'll also be a test for DC as a brand and whether Superheroes as a whole are losing interest in the audiences eyes.

The film sounds like a stepping stone movie. A film meant to set off a universe while ignoring the solo film.

Also the films leaked plot sounds controversial as hell given the fact that it's main plot involves the Middle East🤡

@Scarilian - If he can nail Superman’s supporting cast, then his typical group dynamic could work. I just hope they don’t overstuff it setting up the universe.

@Scarilian - You make a very good point here. His team up films usually have very good individual character arcs that would shine brighter if not muddled in the exposition of all the other team members.

But it's 2023. Not the same. The average person is politically obsessed now and thinks every film has a message they're trying to force.

Basically humanity is more retarded now.💁

This film is gonna bomb. I just don't see it making any money. 600 million tops.

Gunn wanting general audiences to care about a brand new universe that connects comics, games, animation, tv and movies is just a terrible idea. Not to mention his slate is filled with a bunch of C list nobodies.

This isn't 2015 anymore💁

@AmazingFILMporg - Depending on the budget, 600 million wouldn't be a flop. The concerning thing is Gunn being involved in so many projects in such a short period of time going to affect the work on Superman. Also if in order to understand a plot point in a movie, you need to play a videogame, then this universe is just dead before being started. The casual moviegoer doesn't play videogames, let alone WB games.

Not only that you have to watch an animated show too😳...

This isn't 2015. People aren't invested like that anymore.

I love The Boys and even I had no interest is Gen V. I'm glad I gave it a shot but it took everything in me to start the first episode.

Now Gunn wants me to care enough to follow his entire universe story?

No thanks. I'll watch a film at a time💁

@AmazingFILMporg - It’s almost like these studios need to go back to the Agents of Shield approach. The shows are influenced by the movies but the movies aren’t influenced by the shows.

@AmazingFILMporg - I see it as a wild card. That could all be turned around be a single kick ass trailer.

Kind of like how this recent Ghostbusters trailer pulled me from an “I mildly care if there’s a sequel” 4 to an “I cannot wait to see it” 10.

There’s nothing to suggest you’re going to have to watch Creature Commandos to understand Superman Legacy.
mountainman
mountainman - 11/11/2023, 2:51 PM
@regularmovieguy - Correct. My comment was more directed at Marvel as it seems like multiple of their recent movies have been hampered by an over reliance on having seen the shows.

With Superman Legacy, I’m more concerned about too many character inclusions and set up for the future DCU than I am about Creature Commando backstory being required.
