TMNT: William Fichtner Spills A Lot More Details On 'Shredder'

TMNT: William Fichtner Spills A Lot More Details On 'Shredder'

We already heard a few new snippets of info from the Lone Ranger actor earlier today, but in this video interview with Flicks And The City, they manage to get a lot more out of him -- including some hints at what Shredder will look like in the movie..

The first part of this video interview is about Fichtner's tv series Crossing Lines, but around the 12:00 mark the questions shift to his work in the Michael Bay produced reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, in which he plays Eric Sachs, AKA Shredder. He reiterates some of what he said earlier about the Turtles themselves being "freaky", but adds that the tone of this movie is much less cartoonish than expected. He also says that Shredder has some ties to the Turtles that we won't expect (actually mentioning that it's something they came up with while shooting) and that he will indeed, at some point in the movie, coat himself in armor. Fichtner adds that he does expect to see sequels, and he has signed a three picture deal! There's more too, be sure to take a look.

Any of this make you feel better about how this character is being portrayed or the movie as a whole?

Looks like they are making it truer to the original comics. The Turtles weren't meant to be cartoonish.

it'll be cool if they do the thing where shredder is actually one of the krang

I've been a big fan of Fichtner ever since Armageddon. He's one of the few things that gets me excited for this next TMNT movie.... even though they're totally screwing up Shredder's backstory.

Wasn't Shredder Japanese?

i'll just add that if he is a krang then it doesn't matter that his robot suit is Caucasian hahaha

imo anyway. if he wears armor the whole time and we only hear his voice anyway then woopty lol. 80s shredder didn't sound Japanese anyway

good actor but shredder is a samurai turned evil. I hate when they make white samurai. oh well just see what happens i guess.

This is just as big a slap in the face to the character as the casting for Human Torch. If people want to change major things about a character...create a new character. Hollywood Ass Clowns!

I'm tellin' y'all, this Eric Sachs character will be nothing more than a physical shell to house the spirit of Oroku Saki.

The race change doesn't matter when, in the grand scheme of things, the rest of this film is going to suck too.

As much as I love & enjoy Fitchner as an actor, nothing & nobody will beat James Saito's or Francois Chau's performances as Shredder in the original movie & secret of the ooze respectively.

Don't like the idea of changing Shredder's origin or even tying him to the Turtles, the fact they seem to have just made it up off beat on the set too doesn't bode well either.

I wanted to like this movie, but the more & more I hear about it a little bit more if my interest wains from this film.

And now to hear it's a trilogy, oh dear!

I'm really hoping they'll shock or surprise us or make us that are in doubt eat our words but I'm seriously running out of hope for this movie.

:/

So...is this movie now called "Teenage Alien Fighting Turtles"?

Why did they make him white? I just don't understand. You can't even use the "as long as the actor is embracing the essence and does a good job" line when there are plenty of incredible Asian actors who could play this character the way he should be played. And they even made Splinter a white midget? They took all the traditional Asian characters out. It doesn't make any sense. Why not Ken Watanabe, or Chow Yun Fat, or even [frick]ing Jackie Chan? Anybody but a white guy!!!

I will say this though, Fitchner's enthusiasm from that video gave me about 2 - 3% of hope back.

I like it when actors are enthused by a role they're playing (Regardless of being paid to do it).

There's obviously something there for Fitchner, so let's hope this all transcends well with Turtle fans on the big screen.

Ya' know, I went back and watched the first two TMNT movies recently (they're both on Youtube), and when you put nostalgia aside, they're both pretty mediocre. The first is better than the second, what with the darker subject matter and Casey Jones. The second is a real cheesefest and a clear example of the studio dumbing-down the script and happying everything up for a younger audience. The turtles didn't even use their weapons in the sequel (a result of parental complaints of the first film.) And hell, Vanilla Ice (arguably the Bieber of the early 90's) cameos in the film.

Point is, the people who are bitching about this film "destroying the amazing 90's movies" should go back and watch those films again. By the time you get around to the absolutely cringe-worthy third movie, your opinion of those older films will drop like a rock. It's what happened to me.

None of this changes the fact that this movie will be horribly bad and might even be 2014's Battleship and The Lone Ranger.

I have no problem with him as an actor, but I can't understand why on Earth Shredder would not be Asian. You've already got Megan Fox as April so the movie isn't lacking recognizable white people if that's somehow a fear. This and most of the other info that has come out make it pretty difficult to have faith in this film.

Is it possible that Oroku Saki got plastic surgery when he fled from Japan to America and changed his name so he could not be traced?

I kind of have a feeling that this guy here? Will play a real douche against the turtles.

Maybe Eric Sachs is actually a front or disguise of Eroku Saki. Eroku Saki will probably steal the identity of Eric Sachs and use his wealth and power to influence. Maybe this shredder will have the mutant ability to change into others? Isn't that what ninjas do? Disguise? I think this is the direction they are going with shredder.

Fitchner's talent is undeniable. The guy it's one of our best actors...

That said, I can't help but worry. I can't imagine a scenario where coming up with important backstory ON SET is a good idea. I mean didn't the comics already take care of all that?

Sorry santoanderson, but I totally disagree with you about Turtles 1 & 2.

Yes, 3 was an absolute shit fest & I realised that as a young kid, but 1 & 2, as cheesy as 2 is, still hold up on viewings today IMO.

In fact, it's further proof that they should have gone with actors in practical suits (Considering today's art work, costume designing & make up process) over CGI. But that's just me.

And whilst I never mentioned nor said anywhere in my post about this film 'destroying the 90's films' my opinion won't change that they were actually decent movies for their time, no more mediocre than some other films out there in a mediocre category.

And you've already answered it yourself why 2 had problems because of moronic people complaining, making the studio deciding hey, the Turtles can't use their weapons, absolute dumbest idea or change ever!

And personally, I don't think Vanilla Ice was as hated much back then as Justin Bieber is today. At least not to the point that Bieber is, Ice might have had his detractors / haters but they weren't as crazy as some people today.

wait a minute...
Eric(Oruku) Sachs(Saki) ???

could it be possible that in the movie Oruku Saki gets a plastic surgery done to make him-self look like a different person with a fake but similar sounding name to get inside the crowd? or perhaps just a disguise to look different??

At the end of the movie, it will be revealed that Erich Sachs is acually the janitor who cleaned Splinter's cage as a rat, and Krang will say "I AM THE SHREDDER!!!"
