Stephen Norrington's CROW Movie is Not A Remake

Stephen Norrington's CROW Movie is Not A Remake

Way back in December, the Hollywood trades announced that James O'Barr's The Crow' would be getting a reboot to relaunch the franchise to new heights, with a new movie by director Stephen Norrington. Read on here...

Many on sites and magazines etc starting calling it a remake but Mania.com reported this week that the movie will be a all new take on the mythology of resurrection and revenge and it will not focus on the original Crow, Eric Draven story;

A source very close to the development effort says that Norrington is set to deliver his script for the film this very month. Their source says that the story is "very different from the original - a whole new story about a whole new character."

Stephen Norrington's original statement was how the movie would a be totally different reinvention!

The original Crow movie was gloriously gothic and stylized and a cult classic, the new movie will be more realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost he said documentary style to it when he told Daily Variety.

LEEE777 - Im thinking this is the best Crow news ever, i don't think nearly anyone wanted a complete remake of the cult classic The Crow!

Anyway, this sounds like its going to be amazing, with this and also Predator not being remakes, lets hope the lot at Robocop think the same way! ; )

Well Norington is the best man for the job IF he sticks to his "Blade" guns. That feel he had in Blade would be perfect for a Crow film. Can't wait to see it!!!

No but I thnk it can still be called a reboot

Well he IS calling it a "reinvention". So it's a reboot but not a remake. Which is actually a good thing. The franchise seriously needs a reinvention after all the crappy sequels and that shitty TV show. The first will forever remain a cult classic but the franchise shouldn't die with Brandon. The show must go on. As for Eric Draven, he was never the "point" of the franchise. The Crow however, was. So a brand new character is just what the doctor ordered!!! :))

SHAMAN right! Eric Draven was never the franchise! THE CROW is like THE MASK, different people take up the mantle! Keeps it fresh and exciting anyway!!!

OMG, talkin' THE MASK why did the mess that up with THE SON OF THE MASK??? Maybe that too is wanting a sequel, or better still a tv series, different story actor who don's the MASK every week! ; )

You guys are [frick]ing idiots. I've expressed my feelings for The Crow on basically every news story that comes about. All you morons who havnt read this book, go and do yourself a huge favour and buy it ASAP. It is one of the greatest pieces of literature and definitely the saddest I've ever read. It needs to be done right. Eric Dravens story is the only one that matters. Every Crow movie has been hollywood garbage, and this one will be no different. NO ONE should be excited about this.

Divo this is better than a friggin remake of the CROW movie! An yes i have read the book! ; )

James o'barr has done many Crows in many books too! Eric has been done, an i thought the 90's movie done alright, if not great on the movie screen!

HOLLYWOOD wont do a perfect Eric Draven movie, anyways it could be a thousand times worst, i can think of a certain movie that got bent down around its ankles this year an a lot took it! I wont say the name, we all know what movie that was lol! ; D

Im looking forward to this new CROW!

You know I dont want to start any trouble here, this is just my opinion. But it seems to me like the die hards all say the same thing. I mean look at batman. OMG it has always been Michael Keaton this and Michael Keaton that. You know, I loved the Tim Burton Batman films also. But you know what, the Christian Bale version of Batman is just what the story needed to bring it back to respectability. But everyone will always immortalize the Keaton/Burton movies. Now its The Crow and Brandon Lee. I mean yeah, it was a great movie. They did a very good job with it. The rest sucked. Now they are doing a new Crow. I think if they do it right and not follow in the footsteps of all the crappy sequels, they may just luck out and get them a new franchise again. Like Batman did. But at the same time, everyone will know that the original is immortalized. Just like Batman. So I am glad to see them take another stab at it with a completely clean canvas. A new Idea. A new perspective. And I am glad to see that they are leaving Brandons Character alone. Did you hear that Lucky? They are not gona mess up Brandons story. Sheesh. I am interested in seeing it because I hope that everybody has learned what not to do from the sequels. Just my opinion. Hope I did not offend the room.

PPL that want the ERIC DRAVEN movie!? Id rather better sequels myself, an even if they did do the ERIC story again HOLLYWOOD would only change it to what they want! So i think its better off just doing the rebooting of the franchise this way an it keeps it fresh! ; )

LOBO @ Cool name! An you got some very valid points there, good stuff! An i doubt you can offend anyone in here lol!

At least it's not another damn ORIGINS movie. God I'm sick of those. Hollywood has no imagination so once something is successful, they whore the crap out of it.

Anyway...........good news indeed. Be interesting to see his take on the story. Loved the original.

I just watched the original again the other night. Wonderful movie. I'm glad it won't be a remake. Like many of you said there are so many ways they could spin the story.

It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Anil, who the [frick] are you talking about exactly??? Cause i personally was never for "parking" a character on account of the death of the last guy that played him. Since the first day that i heard Norington wanted to do this i was as giddy as a school girl no matter what type of reimagining he had in mind and i'm the same for Joker. Hell i even made a skecth of my pic for the role!!! Benicio Del Toro for the next Joker!!! Even if i have always prefered Keaton for Batman, i could still apreciate Bale's take on him. Nothing wrong with bringing in the new and immortalising the old IMO.

Divo- YOU'RE a [frick]ing idiot for not respecting our opinions. I get that sticking to the source material would be best, but they COULD have done alot worse than what they did with the first film. They made a [frick]ing cult classic with it, what other comic book you know ever came close to getting that title???
Osiris
Osiris - 7/3/2009, 11:35 AM
I am all up for someone taking over the mantel of Joker, but the difference between Joker and crow is that multiple people have been the crow so when they replace the actor it's not a big deal and it should be accepted but I think there might be a hail storm of rage when they replace Heath.

I myself don't care either way either replace Heath with someone that can give an as good or even better performance or just use a different villain, the same goes for the crow if they ever decide to use Draven again I could care less that movie came out in the 90's if they redo it now it wont be that big of a deal. Oh and I love the crow movie and comics.

Shaman - I don't mean to disrespect people, I just really iritated when people who havn't read the novel make it seem like its the greatest CBM ever, when its really close to the source material. I have admited in the past that for an early 90's CBM the crow was done well. I don't think it does the novel any justice though. And I wouldn't call it a cult classic. It had alot of mainstream success. Have you read the novel? Don't you think it deserves justice?!
Shaman
Shaman - 7/3/2009, 12:52 PM
Divo- Yes it does deserve justice. But i'm just glad they succeeded with what they did instead of pulling yet another all too common "Fox" disaster. Could they render justice to O'Barr in using the book but with a different character??? IMO, it could be a possibility. There was much more to the book than just Eric Draven. What do you think?

I didn't mind the second crow movie city of angles I think it was called but after that they just became unwatchable so hopefully this new version will bring the franchise back.

Oh yeah and the best part about the second crow movie was seeing Thuy Trang (Original yellow Ranger) as a crazy bitch.

The original Crow's cast, visuals, and sountrack were good. Script was so bad and wrong. The only things they changed were stupid. Ill love it forever though, it got me into the graphic novel i love 100 times more.

It'll be interesting to see. I own all four Crow films, and I do (as everyone else) love the first one the best. They got worse as time went on. The second one wasn't too bad, though I would've preferred the original cut better. The third one was lacking, and the fourth one was a hard try and something that just did not work and left me saying "Huh?" at the credits. Furlong lost it with T2. I would love to see another movie that was as good as the original. Me and my girlfriend love watching them and I'm sure she'd be just as thrilled to see another good film. Only time will tell I guess, though if this ends up being some guy who is still alive, and just dressesup as a way to enact fear while exacting his revenge, then this will be a flop not worth being called a flop. I guess it's just a waiting game.

i'd also like a different CROW character, like maybe a rapper type character in a inner city, or natural red indian, maybe even a female CROW! Though id also like a CROW in the old wild west too!

The thing with THE CROW is its endless! ; )

Damn, id love to see RAZOR team up with a CROW in a CROW movie too, like in the comic books!

I hate there being more than Eric, takes away from his character. Even O'barr wrote a second character other than Eric. It's not like it was just idiot writers trying to make more stuff for money. I just dont like it, the comics are like the movies. They got to the point where I'd rather just use my time to do something better.
