Andrew Kreisberg On Casting Grant Gustin As THE FLASH On ARROW

Andrew Kreisberg - Executive Producer and Writer of Arrow - talks about how he, Geoff Johns and Greg Berlanti cast Glee star Grant Gustin as Barry Allen on the show and how they'll fine-tune the pilot script for him...

Talking during Arrow set visits in Vancouver this week, this one interview (via KSiteTV/FlashTVNews) talks with Kreisberg about writing the role of Barry Allen, saying that “With Arrow, we wrote [the role] without anybody in mind, this time, as we were writing these episodes, we cast Grant in the middle of it.”. While also talking about the casting process, he also says how after the team met with several actors, the writers all started created the character around Grant Gustin's performance, saying “We met with a lot of other really talented people. Not just talented, but good guys, and it was funny, because as each of us – Geoff [Johns] and Greg [Berlanti] and I — were working on individual scenes, we all sort of came together and said ‘we’re all writing Grant.’ It was just him.”

Kreisberg also mentions that since they now know who is playing Barry Allen, they can fine tune the pilot of The Flash series (Episode 20 of Arrow) towards what they see from Grant Gustin this week on set, saying “That was different, because now when we go into writing the actual pilot in Episode 20, we already have our guy, and we’ve already seen him on the screen, so hopefully we’ll actually literally be able to look at things and learn.”

I know my knee jerk reaction was, He's too young, too skinny and not blonde, but then I remembered how much I love the cast of "Arrow" and now I totally trust their casting decision.

@ MonkeyBalls

Everyone on CW has DBag haircuts and looks. That is why I was dreading Arrow when it came out, but hey I think it is the best CBTV out there.

Is this Flash going to have the speed force, or is he going to smoke some bath salts making him think he's fast as hell.

@ Gurillapud

I think Arrow is going to go the direction of people having powers etc.... I am sure the writers realized they will just paint themselves into a corner doing it Nolan style. Hence the reason why they are introducing the Flash.

Apparently he had said in an interview he's going to bulk up and dye his hair blonde so no worries in him looking the part and im sure with some muscle he'll even look older too! Looking forward to this!

They better get Gustin a better haircut. The one in the picture with Amel looks ridiculous.

Oh, and give us a glimpse of the costume! A design, a drawing... anything!

I know it's lame but the most important thing for me is that he's blonde. Please dear lord make him blonde, or at least sandy blonde, heck frosted tips would be better than straight brown

He just looks a bit young. That's my only beef. Aside from that, who am I to judge?
Ranger14

Barry was no older than 21 when he was recruited as a forensic scientist and he gained his powers not long after that. Thus, I have no challenge with Gustin's age.

wait, where did he say he was going to dye his hair? ugh i hope he does, bulking up can grow eventually during the show, i guess. but i really want barry to be blonde.

Also, he looks like a naturally skinny guy with a small frame. Tyhere's only so much working out can do for you. Especially in the time span of a few months, which is when he'll be on screen.

I agree with TWO THINGS!!!

1. Lets give him a chance to prove if he truly sucks, or not.

2. Mantitium needs to lay off the glue, and caps lock ASAP!!.. But it is impressive if he's six.

I won't comment on the cast. I don't watch Glee and I don't know who this guy is and what he's capable of.

People who said season one is good and trust that these guys know what they're doing, how quickly you've forgotten HEROES and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. So, for me, everything is still up in the air. I'll believe it when I see it.

But my expectation just went spiraling down when I read "the writers all started created the character around Grant Gustin's performance."

I don't know, is this wise? Shouldn't it be, like, the other way around?

If portrays the character well, I won't be concerned with his age or his lack of muscularity. Performance is what it's all about.
