More from Marc Guggenheim on The Flash Movie Treatment!

Chatting with MTV once more, Co-writer of Barry Allen, Marc Guggenheim talks a bit about the tentative Flash movie, as well 'The Rogues' and they're saving for the sequel.

Following his first segment where the Green Lantern adaption was discussed, MTV News' Rick Marshall has posted the 2nd segment of his Q&A session with comic writer Marc Guggenheim. Now discussing The Flash live-action adaption, check out the interview below.

I'm a big fan of the Wally West iteration of The Flash, so I have to ask: What goes into the decision when you're choosing which version of a popular character to focus on? We have the Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern and now the Barry Allen version of The Flash, so how did you decide that Barry Allen is the one to go with for the "Flash" movie?
"It's very similar for the whole reason we went with Hal for the Green Lantern. That’s the Silver Age character. That’s the character people grew up on. That’s the name first associated with that character. So part of it is honoring the legacy aspect, and the other aspect is just practical — you can go forward, but you can’t really go backward. You can’t start with Kyle Rayner, and then do a movie with Hal Jordan.

Just from a practical standpoint, I feel it's better to go in a linear, generational fashion than it is to double back — which is not to say that Kyle and Wally aren’t phenomenal versions of the character. They are, and they are near and dear to my heart. We just have to get up to them."

You've said before that there's going to be a mix of procedural crime story and superhero stuff in the "Flash" movie. How are you finding a balance between the criminal investigation part of Barry’s history and the superhero thing?
"Not to keep drawing comparisons from "Green Lantern," but it's hard not to... With "Green Lantern," what we were doing was combining a space opera with a superhero movie. Here, we’re combining a crime thriller with a superhero movie. There's also an element of a sports movie, because the character is so physical and I feel like there is an athleticism to his power that other superheroes don’t have. I think that's pretty cool.

When Barry Allen was the character, he was a science policeman. We’re obviously updating that and now he’s in forensics and CSI. The tone is sort of darker, and more like "Seven" and "Silence of the Lambs" in that mysterious and noir-ish way, which is also working in conjunction with the superhero elements. It's a lot of fun. I think the character is made for a story and a screenplay that gives you more than the sum of its parts."

I’m sure you can’t give away who the villain is or key things here, but can you tell us who it won’t be? Is Gorilla Grodd out of the mix? Is there anything you can tell us about Flash's rogues gallery and how it's represented in the script?
"[Laughs] Flash has a spectacular rogues gallery. You know it’s funny, because we’ve been trying to come up with a good joke about the cast. Let's see... You won’t see Chunk in it. We’re saving Chunk for the sequel. [Laughs]"

But you can't give me anything on the rogues, huh? What about Rainbow Raider? Fans are dying to see Roy G. Bivolo make his big-screen debut...
"[Laughs] You know, Warner Bros. has one of my kids hostage and they’ll kill her if…"

Okay, okay... I don't want to endanger anyone. Thanks for the update, Marc!

Rick Marshall points out that Guggenheim also says hes currently putting the finishing touches on a "Flash" script with co-writers Michael Green and Greg Berlanti.

Growing up as a kid I remember always being a fan of Batman and The Flash. I never thought in my lifetime these characters would be brought to life in the silver screen. Though Im super excited for a Flash movie I am very curious on how their going to adapt the costume. Seems like every director these days are going for a more realistic approach and lets face it the Flash's costume is as campy as it gets. It looks awesome in the comics but how can it translate to live film without looking over the top. What do you guys think?

I like the idea of starting at the Silver Age and seeing if they can move on from there.

Personally, I think a Flash film will be enjoyable although I am wondering how they're going to get across just how fast Barry, Wally and Co. are on the big screen without resorting to the spoken word. A fight at their speeds would be a challenge to make adequately.

Nice find @Freshman

Intruder- "Whatever.Flash takes it to a another level for lame villains."

True. But i agree with StrangerX. Mirror Master is definitely the way to go for a great movie villain. He could be re-invented of sorts to make him more relevant on the big screen, in our day and age. I just don't want them to refer to him AS Mirror Master though LOL Gawd Flash's villains have crappy cheesy names!

Arminies- I for one had no idea he was a cock in person. All i've seen is how similar his performance on that show is to John Shipp's Barry Allen, so naturally i agreed with everyone else that liked that pic.

Don't worry Dont worry. It's gonna be good. Intruder-Why did you leave out the Mirror Master.

greenlanternsector2814 - 12/9/2010, 12:19 PM
I think it'll be either Captain Cold or even...wait for it...Weather Wizard. All his characters are pretty lame, but that's who I see as one of the choices.

MatchesMalone - 12/9/2010, 12:19 PM
@Intruder- Yeah, I know. His villains definitely lack the intimidation factor, but I just like the Flash a lot so I for one cannot wait for this movie. From what I hear (because I haven't read any recent Flash books) Geoff Johns (I think) sort of revamped his rogues and gave them a scarier edge. Believe it or not, this movie IS going to be made, lame villains or not. Not to mention he did have his own tv show. I'm pretty sure the interest for a Flash movie is there.

wow sounds good. And the Flash as a CSI type cop who gets superpowers sounds really unique because that is one of the main challenges of superhero movies, making each one unique and different without it all becoming the same thing over and over again

I could see Zoom as the villain he always had the vibe of a killer and stalker and it would fit in with the grit Guggenheim mentioned.

@Intruder -
Spiderman's villains are just as or more out there than Flash's villains. Flash's rogues can be really dark and gritty. I agree, some of them are pretty hokey sometimes, but they are definitely still kick ass!
Mirror Master, Heatwave, Captain Cold and Gorilla Grodd
are all villains I'd love to see come to life!
Either way they just need to get Flash, done right, and out there! I love how Guggenheim's describing it!

i've never read a flash comic let alone one with barry allen, wally west was in the JLU so i know about him loved his character, i know about bart allen because of the young justice comics so the movie would be a great way to introduce barry allen to some one like me, it seems like theres a lot of love barry on CBM lol

AlReg- Actually, a reverse flash villain as a minion of Mirror Master (maybe him being the reason reverse flash exists in the film) would be AWESOME!!! He could be kinda like a Bizarro type character where Mirror Master found a way to create him from a reflexion of Barry. Just throwing ideas here and there. I'm just not a fan of Zoom's character concept, myself.

Vermillion- Touché! John Shipp would have looked aweful in blond hair too LOL You definitely have a point. ;)

Matthew Fox has literally nothing to close to anything remotely in common with Barry Allen.

Arminies- Well that's certainly a good point. An unknown could just be what the doctor ordered. As long as the talent is there, i'll be there too :)

But out of curiosity, if you have any links online of those comments from the lost actors, i'd love to read up on that. I really had no idea. I mean, i still like Christian Bale, Alec Baldwin and Mel Gibson as actors, but i just can't respect them anymore as human beings. So i'd love to know more about Matt.

I don't think the costume needs any tweaking. It translated very well to tv in the 90's. They should just go with that design.

They can use Wally as a supporting cast member and for the villains, they could use Captain Cold and Mirror Master.

Anyone talking crap about Flash's rogues needs to actually read a Flash comic. Better yet, pick up Final Crisis" Rogue's Revenge. They're gritty, nasty, blue collar criminals, with a strict code of conduct.
Flash has one of the best rogue galleries in comics.
