SMASH Actor Andy Mientus Joins THE FLASH As 'The Pied Piper'

TV Line report that Andy Mientus has joined the cast of the CW's take on the Fastest Man Alive as one of Barry Allen's original rogues from the comics, the openly gay Hartley Rathaway, aka the Pied Piper. The site also reckon the show won't be shying away from the character's sexuality.

Andy Mientus (Kyle Bishop in the tv show Smash) has joined the CW's The Flash as hearing impaired (and openly gay) DC Comics villain Hartley Rathaway/Pied Piper. The character was one of the original villains in the Flash's "Rogues Gallery", and will apparently be making his appearances in the 11th and 12th episodes of the show. TV line also say that the CW are not expected to "shy away" from the Pied Piper's sexual orientation. Hartley is described as "a bona fide genius who used to work at S.T.A.R. Labs until a falling out with his mentor, Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh). The particle accelerator robbed Hartley of his hearing, but inspired him to create a series of sonic weapons that he uses in an effort to punish Wells by destroying his new protege: The Flash."

They have to make a big deal of someone's sexuality if they're homosexual, but none of the other villains' love lives will be explored.

I don't see what his sexuality has to do with his motivations as a villain, or why it even has to be mentioned in the show at all. They want to make his sexuality seem acceptable, right? If they play it up and have to acknowledge it in this manner, isn't that kind of accomplishing the opposite goal?

The first thing that sprang to mind was Dinesh's description of the Pied Piper logo in Silicon Valley. I didn't even realize how apt it was.

So one area DC is definitely winning against Marvel is LGBTQ representation. DC is like here's several bi/gay ladies and some gay dudes to! Marvel is like 'here are two gay ladies but we will never once mention they are gay or indicate it in any way'.

@Christuffer if they don't mention anything about their sexuality how does the audience know?

Look at Victoria Hand on AoS. One of the only gay characters Marvel has the rights to and it was never mentioned and now she is dead.

@NetmanTripleSec Are you kidding bout Montoya? She is SUPER GAY in the comics! She is Batwoman's ex girlfriend.

Considering that homosexuals represent only 3.8% of the entire US population, I'd say the DC universe is over saturated, realistically speaking.

@NetmanTripleSec

How are they just trying to fill a quota by introducing one of Flash's rogues??

and yeah you're right... they should have made Renee Montoya straight for tv. that would have made sense.

Overaturated?? 4% is like 1/25. I don't think theres that many gay characters in comics.
NovaCorpsFan
NovaCorpsFan - 10/9/2014, 1:07 PM
I don't get why sexual orientation should be that big a deal that you HAVE to make it known to the audience. If the character's gay, make them gay and say it, don't throw it out there just because you want people to know that you're accepting of homosexuals and I hate the fact we live in a society where you can/cannot respect someone's sexuality. Seriously, people need to stop thinking sexuality is a massive deal that everyone needs to have thrown at them. Whatever is, just is.

What about an open Christian/Mormon character? They are misunderstood and occasionally mistreated.

DC: Uh. No. We only include what is politically relevant and trendy.

Well, what about making realistic characters that skew Right? Some of your readers are libertarians and conservatives.

DC: Again, no. Being progressive is cool and trendy.

Well, okay. Can you at least be more diverse with characters?

DC: We're adding gay characters. What more could you want?

I agree! but we don't know what they're going to do yet. We can't say they're "throwing it at us" just because they're featuring a gay character...

I just finished the Gotham Central series a few days ago and it was great. The Two-Face arc outing Montoya as a lesbian and the Joker-sniper arcs were my favorites.

I hope they integrate more GC characters into the show other than Allen and Montoya.
