UPDATE! First Look At 'Pied Piper' As He Fights THE FLASH On Set

Smash actor Andy Mientus will play the openly gay 'Hartley Rathaway'/'Pied Piper' on the 11th and 12th episode of CW's The Flash television series. In the comics the character was introuduced as a villain, but later became an ally. Perhaps, it will play out the same way in the show. Perhaps, not.  TV Line described 'Pied Piper' as "a bona fide genius who used to work at S.T.A.R. Labs until a falling out with his mentor, Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh). The particle accelerator robbed Hartley of his hearing, but inspired him to create a series of sonic weapons that he uses in an effort to punish Wells by destroying his new protege: The Flash."

The first image below of 'Pied Piper' is from YVR Shoots. Click here to see the rest of their photographs from today's shoot.

After a particle accelerator causes a freak storm, CSI Investigator Barry Allen is struck by lightning and falls into a coma. Months later he awakens with the power of super speed, granting him the ability to move through Central City like an unseen guardian angel. Though initially excited by his newfound powers, Barry is shocked to discover he is not the only “meta-human” who was created in the wake of the accelerator explosion — and not everyone is using their new powers for good. Barry partners with S.T.A.R. Labs and dedicates his life to protect the innocent. For now, only a few close friends and associates know that Barry is literally the fastest man alive, but it won’t be long before the world learns what Barry Allen has become…The Flash.

Grant Gustin as Dr. Barry Allen/The Flash, Candice Patton as Iris West, Jesse L. Martin as Detective West, Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon, Rick Cosnett as Detective Eddie Thawne, Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow & Tom Cavanagh as Harrison Wells.

How big of a deal do you guys think they're gonna make about the fact that he's gay. Nowadays a gay character is treated like a retarded kid. "Oh good for him, he's so special."

He looks like a gay hipster.

Knowing CW, it probably won't be that subtle.

"Like, oh my gosh."

or

"You look hot in all that red leather."

He looks more like a goth rather than a hipster. It's the black cape. That Harrison Wells guy seems weird, not sure who he's supposed to be or what his motives are and as to why he's so interested in Barry. I just hope we get answers at the end of Season 1.

I don't see a flute but i'm getting a vibe that they could turn him in to the Shocker emitting sonic waves from his hands.

I'm waiting for the inevitable progressive bunch to paint everyone on here as "bigots" or "homophobes" for not liking the overt sexuality of gay TV characters.

@Marxman12

True. Just because a character is gay that doesn't mean it has to be flamboyant, or that the show has to go "ohhh a gay person, how unique." Can't mainstream media just let equality happen without making a circus of it.

@patrat18 - Ya you're right... he should be doing those stunts. Only a tight schedule with lots of filming to go but what the heck...let's risk the lead getting damaged and screw up filming.

@Marxman12

I love how you can make a statement like that. It's like you think it isn't homophobic that gay people gross you out.

Since all the villains are the result of the explosion that made the flash I guarantee you the only reference to him being gay will be him like on a date when the blast creates all the metahumans. The CW is so [frick]ing sensitive to neck beards like you that they aren't gonna make him super swishy.

For people who enjoy a show whose central premise is in large part dedicated to Stephen Anal's ripped body, you are all pretty [frick]ing ignorant.

After watching the repeat of the Flash episode tonight, I had a thought about the possible true identity of Harrison Wells. In the accelerator accident flashback Wells said (paraphrasing because I don't remember his exact words)" I've waited an eternity for this". I know this is a real stretch, but the way comic book shows sometimes play fast and loose with the characters, could Wells really be Vandal Savage??

@patrat18 I think they would prefer that there actors look and feel the best as possible. It isn't as if you are going to notice the stunt double anyway.

@homodrome Again, you misuse the term "homophobic." I am not afraid of gay people. I am not even grossed out by them. I merely dislike the media pushing an agenda. So that's more of an attack on journalists and celebrities than the LGBT community.
homodrome
homodrome - 11/5/2014, 12:17 PM
@Marxman12 I think you misunderstand the concept of homophobia. Gay people aren't pushing a [frick]ing agenda. Get your head out of your own ass. What you are saying boils down to 'I don't hate gay people, I just don't want to see them on TV'. That IS homophobia. You are a homophobe. It's cool, I could care less that some neck beard is a homophobe. But don't [frick]ing try and play it off as anything then what it is.
