Ray Stevenson Discusses Thor!

What does Volstagg himself have to say about the first day of filming?

At the Book of Eli movie premiere, actor Ray Stevenson spoke with Rebecca Murray about Marvel's highly anticipated 2011 movie Thor. Here are the defining excerpts:

What's happening with Thor?

First day filming today. We're all up there and it's very, very exciting!

How do you play someone who's that fat and big?

Oh, I've got a huge fat suit, I'm going to be shedding a lot of pounds in that thing. It's just great fun and Kenneth Branagh is fantastic!

So you don't need to know the Thor mythology to understand the movie, do you?

It's basically the Thor comic book. . it's definitely the Marvel comic book. The origins of the Norse legends. What is actually behind the Norse legends is what's covered in the Marvel comic book. The existence of Asgard and the Nine Realms. It's more, sort of, in the high realms of intergalactic space and planets. It's very exciting!

What's the tone [Branagh's] going for?

Epic! There are visits to Earth as well, with the wonderful Stellan Skarsgard and Natalie Portman. The presence of gods, or the previous presence of gods. It's a great, great film. The sort of film you want to see as a kid. You come out [saying] 'Oh my god, flight of fantasy here we go!' It's that escapism again, and Marvel and Disney are putting their weight behind it; putting a lot of money behind it. It's the first day of filming. It couldn't be more exciting.

He seems very enthusiastic about being a part of Thor, and I hope his co-stars share that same excitement. Has anyone else noticed that Ray seems like the only cast member that regularly talks to the press about the film?

"I loved him then and got the call out of the blue for this and was completely blown away by it and just jumped at the chance to work with him again."

So he didn't audition for the role? They wanted him, specifically?I wonder if that's true for all the other actors?

Your right, he is the only one that isn't affraid to speak about it. I did find a cool interview with one of the writers the other day, its farther down in main if you missed it MPP its full of info.

Between that one and this one, its about all the actual news we have on the movie.

haha wrong! the penalty came after the ball was loose. it would've been the cards ball anyway. but after that rackers kick who knows if the cardinals would've scored or not!
Dude, living in AZ my whole life, and after the heart breaking super-bowl last year. i'll take anything! the cards commit so many damn penalties there's no way the refs can catch them all! that was the secret! tire them out.

But hey the guy who filled in for Welker wasn't bad. im leaning more towards the third thing you said. im thinking lewis is made of stone and is immortal and will be playing for the ravens for eternity.

Wasn't he in King Arthur as well? I like Ray Stevonson in the period pieces like that & Rome, so he should be a good fit for Volstaag.

SuperAlex and Ozy@ - Nice to hear people are not giving up on Pats, Brady wasn't Brady that day and Ray was unstoppable, and if you have to loose to someone better the Ravens than Colts in the conference final.
But I'm positive they'll be back next year to kick some butt. A whole new decade lies ahead - Go Patriots! :D

Oh and Stevenson in a fat suit is just epic all alone!

Halatir - 1/13/2010, 3:47 AM
I just hope that the fat suit is not done soooo badly as it was for Blob in the Wolverine Movie. I hope they get it properly done as seen in the schotisch guy in the Austin Powers movies....

Ok so am I catching this right. They only visit Earth? So majority of the movie will be in Asgard? Maybe they banish Thor in the end leading him to join the Avengers? Am I making sense?

Either way this looks pretty cool. Can't wait for that first teaser :D

@ ladder7 - That's one big sentence in a paragraph lol!!!

To keep things in context,Ray Stevenson seems to have been studying about the Thor comics alot. In addition, to what he's saying about "Asgard and the nine realms" existing in intergalactic space is very true to the comic.

Furthermore, I remember reading about the character Stellan Skarsgard is portraying. I assume that he is some sort of a college professor/physicist that studies cosmology. You know the study of space and the universe in its totality and by extension humanity's place in it.

Stellan Skarsgard's character also happens to know alot about Norse mythology and maybe other myth's and legends that exist in all cultures. But for this movie Norse mythology in paticular.

Also Natalie Portman's character Jane Foster was given an update for the movie as one of Skarsgard students. So I assume that the character portrayal of cosmologist/physicist would be central around the study of the stars and planets paticularly a strange, mysterious galaxy yet undiscovered(Asgard)!!!

So I guess that Jane Foster would be both a part-time nurse and cosmology student. Considering the fact that Kat Dennings will play Darcy a nurse. Last of all, that Disney/Marvel merger may have paid off big time considering the fact that so much money will make this movie epic. Lets hope that Marvel studios have creative control.

Ok I go sleep now bye-bye....
