Deadline is reporting that Thor: Love and Thunder suffered a brutal 68% drop during its second weekend at the North American box office. That ranks among the MCU's worst, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' 67% decline. It's also tied with Black Widow, though that isn't the best comparison thanks to its simultaneous release on Disney+.
Those of you with a good memory may recall Spider-Man: No Way Home also dropping by 68%, but that's another comparison that doesn't really work when the threequel broke box office records and was making ridiculously large sums of money on a daily basis (making a large dip during its second weekend an inevitability).
In other words, Thor: Love and Thunder's decline has to be blamed on the mostly mixed response to the movie from fans and critics alike.
Taika Waititi's film hasn't resonated with people the same way Thor: Ragnarok did back in 2017, which is evident from these box office numbers. Still, a $46 million haul this weekend is not to be sniffed at, and neither is the fact that it exceeded expectations last week with its mighty $144 million debut.
As of right now, the God of Thunder's latest solo adventure has earned a total $233.2 million domestically and sits at $498 million at the worldwide box office. How it performs over the next few weeks should be very interesting indeed.
"Too silly to take seriously, there’s still a lot to love about Thor: Love and Thunder, but unlike Thor: Ragnarok, it’s unlikely to be a movie you’ll fall in love with," we said in our review of the movie earlier this month. "Marvel Studios may be developing a quantity over quality issue."
On a happier note, Marvel Studios has released a few new stills from Thor: Love and Thunder showcasing Thor (Chris Hemsworth) Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), and Drax (Dave Bautista).
