The French animation company behind Creature Commandos, Bobbypills (Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix), recently released a video displaying their work on the series and simultaneously revealed that the DCU show had been postponed until 2025.
The animation company working on the program would undoubtedly be the one to know about its current state, right?
Apparently not, as DC Studios co-chair James Gunn has stated that the show HAS NOT been delayed and that it's still on track to premiere in 2024. Check out Gunn's Tweets (...err X's) below. Furthermore, Warner Bros. has already had Bobbypills' video taken down from YouTube.
Previously, Gunn also confirmed that all voice recording for the show was complete and that it was wrapped up before the SAG-AFTRA strike commenced. He also confirmed that the series would be set in modern day.
That's somewhat of a significant change as the members of the creature squad typically originate and operate during the World War II time period. It's possible that there will be a flashback to this setting while the main storyline takes place in the present day. We'll likely have to wait until more promotional material for the series is released to confirm.
J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick's Weird War Tales #93 (November 1980) featured the debut of the original team which consisted of a gorgon, a werewolf, a vampire, a Frankenstein's monster, and a human team captain. That's a slightly different line-up from the roster of monsters that will be featured in Gunn's take.
During World War II, the United States Army developed the unit to carry out tasks that were too dangerous for normal soldiers. The team was made up of monsters since they were thought to be resistant to fear and suffering, as well as being more expendable than regular soldiers. It will be interesting to see how James Gunn differentiates this team from DC's other expendable group of soldiers, the Suicide Squad.
The animated series will hit Max in 2024 and stars David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein/Frankenstein's Monster, Indira Varma as The Bride, Zoe Chao as Dr. Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Sean Gunn as Weasel and G.I. Robot, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
Gunn has previously indicated that the voice actors are all expected to reprise their roles in any live-action appearance.
Another recent but unconfirmed rumor has pegged The Witcher actress Anya Chalotra as playing Circe in the animated series.
Though Creature Commandos will technically be the first new project released by the new DC Studios, Gunn has also previously disclosed that a deeper dive into the new DC canon starts with Superman: Legacy.
