John Cena Updates PEACEMAKER Season 2 Filming Schedule; Will James Gunn Have Time To Direct?

Coming out of WrestleMania XL, wrestler-turned-actor John Cena has shared an update on his Hollywood filming schedule including when cameras will roll on Peacemaker season 2.

Appearing on ESPN's  The Pat McAfee Show, John Cena shared what his future schedule looks like, post WrestleMania XL.

While the "Doctor of Thuganomics" revealed that he wants to return for one more full-time wrestling run, it doesn't sound like he'll have the time.

"We started filming [a movie] before the strike called Heads of State Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Idris Elba," Cena revealed.

"And then straight from that to Peacemaker Season 2. That'll take us through just about Christmas. I'm crossing my fingers, and toes, and my heart, that maybe – maybe just maybe – I can tell the Hollywood World to pump the brakes for a while and come back to my family for one last run. I hope, I don't know. I hope, I'm trying, we'll see what happens."

Previously James Gunn wrote every episode of Peacemaker season 1, while directing 5 out of 8.

Gunn recently disclosed that he's written all of season 2 while hinting that he might not be able to direct as many episodes of season 2 as he's busy with Superman.

Superman filming officially kicked off on February 25, 2024, and if the film has the traditional superhero movie shooting schedule of 6 months, it should wrap up principal photography some time in late-August. It seems that will allow enough time to allow Gunn to direct a few episodes of Peacemaker season 2.

Previously, Gunn teased that the show's shift from the DCEU to the DCU won't be the main focal point of season 2, stating that he doesn't want the "universal shift to be that big a part of the story."

Gunn also revealed [via Threads] that the following characters from season 1 will be making the leap to season 2:

• Peacemaker (John Cena)
• Vigilante (Freddie Stroma)
• John Economos (Steve Agee)
• Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks)
• Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland)

Rotten Tomatoes gave the DCEU series a 94% approval rating, making it one of the most critically lauded productions of the franchise. In addition to Gunn's involvement, this positive reception likely played a key factor in the show's continuation and the decision to keep most of the show's main cast intact.

Will you be tuning in to Peacemaker season 2? Let us know in the comment section below.

ABOUT PEACEMAKER Season 1
Peacemaker explores the continuing story of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of James Gunn's 2021 film The Suicide Squad—a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.

The 8-episode television show was created by James Gunn for the, "then-named" streaming service HBO Max.

The show stars John Cena as Christopher Smith / Peacemaker, Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase / Vigilante, Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos and Robert Patrick as August "Auggie" Smith. Dee Bradley Baker voices Peacemaker's pet bald eagle, Eagly.

Had an absolute blast with season 1 and Cena gave his strongest performance to date.
No complaints from me going into Season 2. More Eagley and Vigilante would be a plus.

@JFerguson - just recently copped a NM copy of Vigilante's first appearance. Super hyped on it. Loved him in season 1 so cannot wait for more!

@McMurdo - that’s dope! From what I understand, peacemaker’s take on the character is a huge departure from how he is in the comics.

Glad people are embracing gunn’s version of him though.

@JFerguson - ya he's actually better in Gunn's iteration believe it or not.

I'm confused, didn't Gunn say that he wouldn't be directing this season? I swear I read that somewhere.

@RedFury - You're thinking of this article where Gunn said he wouldn't be able to direct them all, only some. https://comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/peacemaker/james-gunn-says-peacemaker-season-1-is-not-part-of-dcu-canon-superman-will-lead-into-season-2-a209820#gs.77rpq2

@RedFury - e said he wouldn’t be directing as much so he’ll still be involved in some degree but not as much as S1 ( I think he still wrote all the episodes though)

I could see him directing 2 episodes or so atleast.

@MarkJulian @TheVisionary25 - ah okay so I'm half remembering! Thanks guys!

I wouldn't blame him if he can't direct even a single episode. He's got so much on his plate. Here's hoping he really trusts the folks he's hired to take over for him. None the less I'm sure his finger prints will be all over it even outside of the script. He seems like a pretty accomplished multi-tasker.

@RedFury - yeah , hope so

I do worry about the work load so I hope he can manage it and it not negatively effect any projects

@TheVisionary25 - Same, I'd much rather he focus on Superman than do PM; even though I love S1. There's a lot riding on that film, and it deserves all the attention and time he can give it.

@RedFury - yeah but if he can manage both then good on him

Lord knows I wouldn’t lol

Cool , looking forward to S2 since I thought Season 1 was solid honestly!!.

Also interested in the Heads of State movie now too , I like the leads aswell as the rest of the cast in Jack Quaid , Carla Gugino , Stephen Root , Paddy Considine etc…

Plus it’s directed by Illya Naishuller who directed Hardcore Henry & Nobody , the latter of which i liked!!.

@TheVisionary25 - rewateched this again the other night, and would absolutely love a sequel to it. For a film built within satire it was still able to stand on its own. That bus fight is pure gold.

Gunn will have time, he's even skipping Comic Con as he said months ago in Threads saying he would be "busy shooting". And then there's this other answer that is recent.

He'll direct Peacemaker S2.

Great news, First Season is great, I always rewatch Gunn´s SS and starts to watch Peacemaker S01 right in the end of the movie.
Maybe one or two cameos from characters of SS movie would be nice ( Bloodsport, Ratcatcher and King Shark!)

@McMurdo - Fact! I think King Shark would be the easiest one, because well, its CGI, the body actor (Steve Agee) is already there filming, and Stallone could record his lines anywhere…

@McMurdo - besides, King Shark is kind of “Rated R Groot”, everybody likes him!

Peacemaker was more likeable than I thought he would be, especially being played by John Cena.

The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1 were both good and entertaining.
