UPDATE: Splice Director Wants To Tackle Swamp Thing Next

Speaking to io9, Vincenzo Natali, director of the upcoming Sci-Fi movie Splice has told them that there are 2 projects on his to do list, and one of them is an adaptation of Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing..Update: Natali also spoke to MTV about his desire to make the film..

If you haven't heard of Splice, that will surely change! Its garnering controversy and rave reviews in equal measure. It stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polly as two young scientists who strive to achieve fame by splicing human DNA with the DNA of different animals to create a new creature. In the process they ignore their society's ethical and legal boundaries.

Anyway, the director of Splice, Vincenzo Natali currently holds the rights to direct an adaptation of J.G. Ballard's High Rise, but he would also really like to make Swamp Thing...

"Very briefly, High Rise is a novel by J.G Ballard(Crash), its something that I've been working on for a number of years. I would love to make it into a movie....And Swamp Thing is just something I would love to do. Personally I'd like to go down the Alan Moore road if I could."

The above is transcribed from a video over at io9 which you can see by clicking on the link below.

Last we heard from the Swamp Thing movie camp was from Joel Silver who assured us a movie is on the way. I haven't seen Splice yet, but I have seen another film of Natali's called Cube which is a very under rated sci-fi movie. With Splice making the waves it has been hopefully the studios take notice of the interest and get things moving with proper big screen outing for the Earth Elemental.

Update:

"There are two incarnations of Swamp Thing — both of them are quite wonderful," said Natali. "The first one was by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, which was a more traditional sort of retake on classic, James Whale-style, Universal Studio horror films. Then Alan Moore reinvented the character in the early '80s, and that's actually the version that's a little more interesting to me.[Swamp Thing] kind of became... I don't want to call him an ecological superhero, but he became an ecological character quite unlike anything you've ever seen before, It's a comic book, but it delves into some very interesting stuff, both psychological and philosophical. It would be — if done properly — extraordinary."

YES!!! Huge Swamp Thing fan loved the classic movies, even though the second one was a bit cheesey. No CG Swamp Thing get a great make up guy on it. Mark Wahlberg as Dr.Holland and Bill Nighy as Arcane.

haha, the clip actually doesn't look that good, but I haven't read a single review that doesn't give it 4 or 5 stars...and for a horror movie like this thats a rare thing.

I rarely see a movie that is awful from start to finish, but that train wreck that was "Man Thing" on Sci Fi Channel (when it was Sci Fi) was close to un-watchable.

Would love to see it done and done right !

Serious question on a Man Thing movie:

How do you get around him not talking ?
foxfan
foxfan - 4/7/2010, 9:23 AM
FYI the Man-Thing movie is a low-budget film that premiered on the Sci-Fi channel; it needs to be done right!

Also FYI Man-Thing appeared before Swamp-Thing, by less than a year. The guy who created Swamp-Thing was a roomie with the guy writing the early Man-Thing stuff. Marvel was going to sue DC over it but decided not to.

foxfan - 4/7/2010, 9:25 AM
Skunk Ape 1 - that's a great question, the one about Man-Thing not talking. Stan Lee keeps saying there will be a live action Doctor Strange movie soon, so perhaps Man-Thing (who has a unique connection to Doctor Strange) could be a tie-in character in that movie. Good question, though.

Been thinking about it for a while because have always been a "Man Thing" fan. Don't see a way around it.
Other than grunting....
Maybe could work ??

Natali is a good director and i think that they should let him direct Swamp thing. He or Zack Snyder.

Viggo Mortensen or Michael Fassbender for Dr. Alec Holland / Swamp thing
and Bill Nighy definitely for Anton Arcane
