REVIEW: Did The CW's Four-Part CRISIS ON EARTH-X Crossover Event Live Up To The Hype?

Warning: Spoilers for Crisis on Earth-X below.

After watching this four-part event, it was hard for me not to compare it to last year’s crossover. The most glaring advantage that Crisis on Earth-X has over Invasion! is that it is a four-episode narrative arc, whereas last year’s Supergirl episode, Medusa, was just a Supergirl show with a crossover cliffhanger. This year’s installment truly has been the most sprawling and expansive of all the Arrowverse events. Things have been ramping up to this for years, starting with 2014’s two-episode “Flash Vs. Arrow” storyline, followed by 2015’s two-episode “Heroes Join Forces” event and then last year’s “Invasion!”  This season might have been high-stakes, and on a huge scale, but how did it compare in quality?

Let me start with some positives. I enjoyed seeing our Arrowverse heroes fighting Nazis more than last year’s aliens, although this is due to the budget of the show. The hand to hand combat at the end of the Arrow and Flash episodes were some great action scenes. The character's Earth-X doppelgangers were also standouts, having superheroes fight their other dimensional selves is a trope that I particularly enjoy. Since news of Victor Garber’s departure from Legends of Tomorrow, his death on the show has been inevitable. Martin Stein’s exit from the Arrowverse was handled smoothly, including an emotional scene between him and Jefferson.

There were several action scenes I found jarring within these four episodes, but I would say this is due to budget and special effects restrictions. One of these was the Earth-X Red Tornado scene featuring the Flash.  Another includes the final confrontation with Metallo. Although I enjoyed seeing our heroes fight real people, sometimes the dialogue concerning the Nazis felt a little awkward. For example, Earth-X Kara talking about an Aryan race.

My other complaints are more nitpicky, like not enjoying the amount of exposition pertaining to each individual show.  However, I understand why this is necessary; the audience that tunes in for these events probably doesn’t watch every series. These episodes also had me asking little things like, where is Elongated Man during all this?

Overall, these four episodes were a success. They were entertaining, but still had some of the same flaws we see week to week in these shows. For every cheesy line, like Wells telling Cara to go “up… up… and away”, we get to see an intense shot, like the Flash fighting the Reverse Flash. Relative to CW standards, I found this event to be thoroughly enjoyable.

Loved it!!!!!! It was awesome!

And the ending was fitting.....I mean for a CW show!

The ending could have been way better, like the death of Felicity or Iris. But I guess the good thing is we do not have to watch anymore of the Do we date and fall in love scenes anymore.

@JoeMomma29 -
I agree. I am so tired of the Olicity, but sometimes you just have to put them together and move on to other stories. The will they, won't they just got exhausting.

Easily the best crossover event they have done yet. Easily tops the lackluster one from last year. It was a lot of fun and well made.

I enjoyed it for the most part (they definitely blew their whole special effects budget here) and loved the Flash/Reverse Flash fight. Seeing the heroes fight together was very cool. The line with Rory calling cops pigs was really offensive though. I get how left and liberal the CW is (every Supergirl ep jams it down your throat!) and I understand Mick is a criminal, but calling police officers pigs is disgusting and if they don't lay off with their politics, they are going to push people who don't think like the writers do far, far away from watching these shows! Alienating an audience to push an agenda is a dumb business model.

@Buckster10 - if you consider having a character who is a criminal, who repeatedly stated he hates cops, calling cops pigs to be "political" then you're a freaking snowflake. There's nothing political about that, it was about as in character as it gets. They didn't glamorize the idea that cops are pigs. They had one character call cops pigs, because he hates cops. It's interesting how you ignore the part where the Earth X version of Heatwave died saving police officers. Oh, that's because it doesn't fit your "cw is left and liberal" narrative. Get over it. You're the one politicizing it. In 3+ hours of television, you're going to pick that one sentence out and act like that was the Crux of the whole thing?

It would be easier to say that cw was trying to glamorize Nazism than it would to take your stance.

Oh, and also cops ARE pigs.

@Buckster10 - While I'm not a fan of how obvious the liberalism is on these shows, you do realize that a pig is a legit nickname for cops, right? Just like a Marine is a jarhead. While Mick probably meant it in a derogatory manner, a lot of people use the term affectionately.

@Buckster10 - You do realize that Rory is Heatwave, and started out as a criminal. He was partnered with Captain Cold, and they robbed things. This is completely in character with them. And all 4 shows have been incredibly respectful of police forces. Supergirl depicted Maggy who was a detective, very well and competent. She knew about the underground alien world before the DEO knew about it. Both Arrow and Flash have main and supporting characters that are in the police force. Arrow had Detective Lance, and now Dina Drake. Flash has Joe West, and Berry Allen works for the police force as a CSI. On Legends, there have been plenty of episodes where they have fought side by side with the US military, and Sara's dad is Captain Lance.

@Specialkail1 - You ARE a POS if you think that. That statement tells me everything I need to know about the kind of person you are. Make sure you never need a cop to save your ass because I guarantee people like you are the first ones to cry for a police officer when the crap hits the fan!

@Buckster10 - guess what, if I need a police officer I'll call them, because it's their fn job to uphold the law. I like how you ignored all the other stuff I said and just cried like a little baby because I'm not a copsucker like you.

@gathrawnigf - actually calling a cop a pig is a sign of disrespect. It's not the same as Jarhead in the slightest.

@GAThrawnIGF - I'm a recently retired NYPD sergeant who worked in some of the most crime-riddled areas of Brooklyn my entire career. Someone got shot (not by cops, but other criminals) every other day. I once waved and smiled to a little girl whose mother smacked her for waving back to me. A cop in my building worked in the same command as officer Liu and officer Ramos who was assassinated a few years back while protecting the community where they worked. He was good friends with officer (now posthumously detective) Liu who he said had a great sense of humor. Flatfoot is an "affectionate" term for a cop. Pig is a disgusting derogatory label that has no place on a campy superhero show.

@wingsabre - I definitely see your point, I just feel that in a campy superhero show a main character calling cops "pigs" (even if it's a criminal saying it), is going too far.

@Specialkail1 - I'm sure you will because "internet tough guys" usually cry the loudest when things go south. And they will still come to help you because they are twice the man you will ever be. But you are right about one thing, pig is a sign of disrespect.
