With the recent rumors that Paul Levitz departure from DC Comics would mean more movies based on the universe created in Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' graphic novel, ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk to Patrick Wilson (Nite Owl) at the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival where they asked him whether he had heard anything about the rumors and what he thought about them:

We always sort of joked, like 'What would happen?'. But the reality is I think the movie's great, I had an unbelievable time doing the movie, but actually, from that perspective - it's not that you're ever glad that a movie didn't do $500 million--but for the idea of 'Now we've gotta do a sequel,' financially it wouldn't even make sense.

But I feel that the DVDs and Blu-Ray have done very well with all the different versions.

Yeah, but I don't know what you'd ever do with it, I don't know how you'd ever...the whole point of the movie...

...is that it's one complete story.

Yeah, yeah.

This will never happen and thank God for it! Besides, there's only one CBM character that Wilson should play in future...

No Tyler, what would happen is:

Alan NOMoore

lol

If they wait ten years, and REdo it as an LOTR trilogy then we're talking.

Right now - it's only been out for a year (both the live action film and motion comic), and I guarantee you that from all these different iterations/formats it'll pick up enough following and steam to do quite well at some point in the future.

If people would have gone to the theatres and seen what we all know is in that book, it'd have gotten reviews as one of the best movies of all time - and probably awards (which also boosts crowd draw/profit and subsequent dvd sales). Leave out the grindhouse shit, restore the character origins to their full glory, and by all means - trust that the audience is smart enough to understand what the conspiracy/squid is all about, and it will do some proper numbers.

As it is - it's just left most people (non cbm freaks like us that I've talked to anyway) shaking their heads, going "what the [frick] was that I just saw?". And half of them were like - look at that blue guy's donk har har har - [frick]ing Beavis and Butthead shit, I swear.

I just think, and this is really not being pretentious, but I think mainstream pop culture is a tiny little bit not quite ready for the ultimate depth of that story. Very close, but not yet.

GambitAceOfSpades - yeah, well everybody has their favorites (that's part of the point, I believe). And Rorshach is the uncompromising idealism - the unflinching TRUTH and JUSTICE, if you will. Not to mention that he's a badass who will break your neck while reciting slam poetry lol. It's only HALF explained why he is how he is, and the lack of mask exposition dumbed his character down a great deal.

With how they whittled everything down, there was just no way to get it all across.

Jimdlux - ain't that the truth man lol

I bet the crew who worked on it cried when they didn't make any money off of it. Poor guys, the movie is so great and did so poorly, it's very strange lol.

@48and2: Ha ha. Rorschach reciting slam poetry. More like "Slam You On Yer Back, Kicking Your Ass" Poetry.

And you're right. They did whittle everything down to its bare bones. And while I'm sure that we can agree that you and I would like to see a 6-8 hour EPIC that is Watchmen, it just won't happen. Maybe, in the future, a mini-series done by HBO or something to do it justice? Possibly?

And a big, fat, F*CK NO to a Watchmen sequel. Talk about missing the point!

The only way I would ever tolerate "prequels" or sequels to the Watchmen would be if Alan Moore himself decided to write them. I say this knowing that I've got better odds of hitting a $100 million+ jackpot on the Powerball than I do of seeing Moore write any more Watchmen-related stories.

The fact that someone on would even consider a prequel/sequel shows there lack of interaction with the book..Proud of Wilson having that realization though

IrvineGray - you're probably right. But the one truly redeeming quality of the film is the quality of the effects - they are magnificent. Especially Manhattan's Mars clock, and when SS shattered it - even Roger Ebert was eating that up lol. And that will never be achieved on an HBO budget - maybe in like 20 years when effects of that quality are extremely prolific and cheap.

Also I think the casting was nearly flawless, and will be hard to replicate in the future.

It's a story for the ages, and the themes will always be applicable in any society or civilization. So I'd be willing to bet in most of our lifetime's we'll see it redone.

Without the exposition of Rorshach's mask; Dr. Manhattan's origin/story in full grandeur and detail, as well as Veidt's - and again even the squid/movie production conspiracy, it is just a broken shell. Hell - even the Black Freighter could be woven in cinematically in a very beautiful way.

W3bH3ad - that is very cool of Wilson saying what he did. I respect him even more than I already did.

And what's with OwlMan guys? has he been around for a long time or is that a new blatant ripoff character just introduced in Justice League: The New Frontier‎.

Because I see that as an obvious attempt to capitalize on Watchmen's success and the fact that now mainstream audiences can grasp and accept alternate dimensions, and some of the deep science/sci-fi concepts in Watchmen. I have to say I was just laughing at "Owlman" - [frick]ing ridiculous.

Keven - that's a good point too man, for us - the fans - this is a case where it's probably better that it did what it did. Seems Wilson was agreeing with that too.

If they make a sequal or Prequal I'll never ever see them. They would suck. I would side with Alan Moore and make sure it never happens. He said Watchmen was unfilm able and I agree. The movie wasnt that good.

i dont think that a sequel to watchmen will be a very godd idea, they have no story to go off and if they made one up then it wouldnt be any good. it will be one of those straight to dvd movie like punisher war zone.
