AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Loses A Third Of Its Audience In Second Week, But Is Still Going Strong

After a huge premiere, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s second episode lost over 30% of the viewers who tuned in for the Joss Whedon helmed pilot episode. However, while the numbers are still far from bad, it may be a little concerning that so many people have jumped ship so soon!

Despite a cameo from Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. slipped a considerable 34% from its huge premiere last week. With a 3.1 rating in the key 18 - 49 demo, that's a considerable drop from the pilot episode's 4.7. These are still good numbers for the series which takes place after the events of The Avengers, but it's clear that a sizeable portion of the audience weren't completely sold on the Joss Whedon helmed debut (the show was also down by 30% in terms of total viewers). In comparison, The Blacklist - which was this Fall's highest rated premiere until Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. came along - debuted with 3.8, but still had 3.6 this past Monday.

It's tempting to attribute the drop to people's realization that this show sucks.. but I won't.

Well duh. The pilot of any new show will be watched by more people than the second episode of that show.

Dude don't listen to the haters, go watch the show and see if you like it but if you're a big fan of Whedon. You'll love this show :D

They'll never be able to afford the actors who played Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Hulk to do cameos. Unless it coincides with the release of their new individual movies and they do it for free or at least union scale like Samuel L. Jackson did.

I like the show though and I'm willing to give it a chance.

They should have teased Graviton at the end of week one.

I think people were expecting something closer to The Avengers in quality, but this is more Disney series quality level (which is why it's on ABC). They better pick up the pace, writing quality and action or this will be a one season series.

Hopefully they are past all the team issues things. Because its always too cheesy. They need to get down the the point that they are good at what they do, now kick some butt.

thats still pretty strong,i think ncis factored in because a long time character left the show and they were marketing that and plus alot of people might have DVRED it,some people work at night or like to fast forward through the commercials.i want this show to succeed ,i have liked it so far, havent loved it,has problems but i am giving it a full season

I have yet to start watching the show, but some good points made about the Pilot Episode...in the sense of, you can't expect too much in a Pilot. Series' usually get their heart and gold continuing and expanding...

General audiences may have been expecting to see super heroes based on all the hype connecting the show to The Avengers. If your gonna throw out the idea this show is in the spirit of X-Files then the writers better get out of the cookie cutter, safe, Marvel Studios way of doing business and start writing more edgy material, because without superheroes, the show is pretty tame.

I missed the pilot, but based on the second ep, this show deserves to lose viewers. Clark Gregg and Ming-Na and a bunch of obnoxious, uninteresting kids. I was not impressed by the writing, aside from a few small joke lines. Samuel L. Jackson's cameo was horrible.

I don't like to be the "glass half empty" guy, but this show looks to me like it is trying to make it on Avengers goodwill/association and not much else. The Marvel Onscreen Universe may have finally taken a step down.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. airplane is pretty cool, though.

Whedon likes to start of light but as the season or series progresses, goes dark er and hurts the characters and then makes you realize how much you cared for them,DAMN YOU WHEDON!!

@MrYurMomm

The tone of the show ties in with the rest of the MCU. Granted it does have some cheesy one liners and what not but it's still the Whedon-esque dialogue and the VFX are impressive for a tv show. Give it a chance.

I dunno why Marvel cancelled A:EMH -_-

ABC Disney will not give up on their tentpole show before season 2, but I predict some major retooling (writing, cast shakeups) down the road. I also don't think Jed Whedon and Maurissa T. have the chops to do this without big brother Joss's help.
NoAssemblyReqd
NoAssemblyReqd - 10/2/2013, 9:30 AM
@McMyagano They cancelled A:EMH to make way for their Marvel Cartoon Universe, which is so far three series which cross over with one another. Smart plan, I guess, but I wish they could have made it work with the EMH story and style.

It's nowhere near numbers that would warrant a cancellation.
It's demo is still very good and that's what it's mostly about.

There are many people like myself who saw the pilot on network tv and are now choosing to watch it via Hulu or other options. Today's audience viewership numbers don't mean as much because there is a large segment of the population that does not watch live tv now.

As to the team, the team needs to continue to have some challenges to make it an it resting show. Teams always deal with conflict and conflict resolution and they don't always get along. Whedon did a fantastic job of team dynamics in Firefly. You have a mismatch cast of characters who don't always get along but come together when it comes down to crunch time, I'm very cool with the way they are playing out the team dynamics this early on.

oh come on now. we know the first episode was a little bit of how we get together. okay. benifiet of the doubt. second episode, can we work together? no superheros or villains? now this is marvel world yes? and all we get is a small cameo by nick fury? this show needs some heros, villians, something. yes no big avengers, but what about iron fist, bullyseye, ms marvel(a very hot ms marvel) or something. if not then this show will not last.

Kinda hope they kill Coulson off and promote Maria Hill.
But Cobie is probably not going to commit, she has a brewing film career to work on.

@blkyank "start writing more edgy material". That doesn't always "sell" either.

Anyway, last night's episode wasn't too bad. I think next week will pick up. Isn't Gravitron suppose to appear? Also, Agents Of SHIELD is a good time to introduce characters like Cloak & Dagger(who were to have their own show & movie a one point)

jeez thats a big number. its gonna get better but any secret cameos they have in store they just need to promote to bring those numbers back up
