Which Marvel Comics Character Would Damon Lindelof Most Like To Adapt For The Screen?

EXCLUSIVE: I asked Prometheus co-writer and big comic book fan Damon Lindelof which character he would be interested in bringing to the big screen. He also gives his thoughts on Christopher Nolan's Batman, and Marvel's The Avengers..

Damon Lindelof should be very well known to CBMers. One of the creators and showrunners of Lost, he has since gone on to work on the likes of J.J Abrams' Star Trek reboot and John Favreau's Cowboys And Aliens. His latest project was co-writing the screenplay for Ridley Scott's Prometheus, and he was kind enough to have a chat with me all about that. But knowing how big a comic book fan he is (he actually wrote the Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk miniseries) I also slipped in a CBM related question. It seems Mr Lindelof is a big Iron Fist fan..

MC: So which character or characters would you most like to adapt for the screen and why?

DL: Well there's a huge part of me that wold somehow like to be involved in a Batman movie, but now that I've seen what Christopher Nolan has done with it I just don't think that anyone is ever going to do better. Sooner or later someone may have the audacity to do so, but It's not going to be me! I think I would rather do a character that not many people knew, and maybe saw as lame and couldn't carry their own movie. One character I've always loved is Iron Fist, and Matt Fractions incredible run with him a couple of years back. I always thought that would make a really cool movie. But I am hard pushed to think of me doing anything better than The Avengers which I just thought was phenomenal.

MC: Yeah it was great alright. But Iron Fist is interesting because there has been talk at Marvel in the past about getting that movie off the ground, I'm not sure anything ever went to the script stage though..

DL: Yeah well I mean I think it's because he's even more fringy than Iron Man was, and also because he's called IRON Fist they may be worried about some confusion with the Iron Man franchise, even though obviously they are very different characters. But I have to imagine that with the success of The Avengers, they are planning to give Black Widow and Hawkeye their own spin-offs, and there are many more characters on the fringe of the Marvel universe that I feel are equally worthy, like Iron Fist.

What do you guys think? Is it time for an Iron Fist movie? Would you like to see Damon Lindelof holding the pen? Sound off below, and be sure to keep an eye on CBM for the full interview over the weekend, and my review of Prometheus later on today.

I'd rather see a Heroes for Hire movie than just an Iron Fist movie. I'd like to see some more street level Superheroes in the MCU.

Filmmakers love Nolan because he's a consummate FILMmaker. He doesn't make popcorn fluff flicks. That's why he was able to take a ridiculous concept like a guy bent on revenge who dresses like a bat and beats up bad guys and turn it into a serious film that the general public not only accepted, but revered as great drama.

This doesn't take anything away from Favreau and Whedon, however. They make great CBMs, but that's what they were - COMIC BOOK MOVIES. Begins and Dark Knight would have been excellent films even if Batman had no comic book history to draw from. Nolan is a masterful storyteller, not just a good director. Yes, I'm a Nolan-ite. But I'm also a HUGE Whedon-ite. I've loved everything the guy has ever done.

I second the 'Heroes for Hire' over just an Iron Fist movie.

Although an Iron Fist movie and Luke Cage movie leading into a Heroes for Hire movie would also be excellent.

@Talon I agree 100% He would make an awesome Iron Fist. I read somewhere a while ago that he actually auditioned for the role of Captain America. He also said in an interview he would love to play a superhero because it would mean the world to his daughter. Iron Fist is definitely a great choice for him!

Iron Fist movie would be awesome.
Ryan Phillippe or Charlie Hunnam would be great Danny Rand.

Other martial artist i would want to see on the big screen is Shang-Chi.
Byung Hun Lee or Jon Foo could be great in the role.

Well f'ing said, this pointless rivalry will outlive whedon and nolan, its in fanboy DNA. Do people think this argument will one day be won!? And even of it were, that would be a sad day for CBMs. Both are legends and class acts from two different worlds.

"Filmmakers love Nolan because he's a consummate FILMmaker. He doesn't make popcorn fluff flicks."

...and that's why Warner Brother executives have referred to TDKR as this summer's popcorn flick? ;-) People take the "popcorn flick" term way too seriously. I eat popcorn at every film I go to, so every film is a popcorn flick to me.

He seems to be pretty eager to want to helm Iron Fist.
Charlie Hunnan would be excellent for the role. Ryan Phillipe just seems too meh.

Can't wait to hear Marvelites complain about how overrated Nolan's movies are. @TommyMonaghan pointed at the main point that nolanites as myself usually point to that Nolan gave a hero the highest honor of all, being able to transcend the stereotypical view that CBM's are merely for enjoyment and serve no story or reflection upon society as a film

IRON FIST has more than enough solo leverage to handle his own movie.

Iron Fist would be great, but I think the smarter move for Marvel would be to do a 'Heroes for Hire' film starring Iron Fist & Luke Cage.

Cool, there it is Marvel, go after a bright one who's interested, not some shitty actor who wrote a comedy movie and the lead star of your movie suggested

I would respect 100% @tommymonaghan's opinion but when I read that batman was a stupid concept to begin with, I understand he doesn't give a shit about comics. Therefore he would never understand what true comicbook fans expect to see on the silver screen when they get to know their favorite characters will be in it.

The problem with Iron Fist is how to make it different than a "standard" martial arts film. So many of the Martial Arts films have shown characters with unrealistic powers and lots of Wire-Fu, from the Matrix films to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. How can you (a) make an Iron Fist movie unique, and (b) convince an audience that this is something different than what they have seen before?

Never was it said they are doing a Black Widow/Hawkeye.
