Disclaimer: The following is not a 'review' of Marvel Heroes and nor should it be taken as such. It is a personal evaluation of the beta program and does not reflect the final game client.

Marvel Heroes is an upcoming action-based MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) developed by David Brevik (Diablo series) and Gazillion Entertainment. In Marvel Heroes, you may choose a free hero to start with and play a slew of missions and side-quests that should take you quite a while to complete, while offering you the ability to gain loot and experience to power-up your hero as you go along. Certain areas of the game are open and will be filled by the many players on the server. The story is provided by engaging motion-comic cut scenes with fully fledged voice-acting. In a way, if you’re a fan of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance this is basically an online version of that cult-classic.

Marvel Heroes’ advantage was a long-running beta program that, for a while, wasn’t allowed to be talked about. I never kept-up with the game because at the time, I had a terrible computer and I knew I couldn’t play it. So, when I was finally able to upgrade to what I have now, I was able to snag a beta key (shout-out to Deadpool Bugle for providing them) and instantly hopped on the game at each scheduled beta period. At that time, the beta client was very bare but still had the fundamentals of what was needed for the game and I still had fun. Choosing Captain America was a blast, and the fact that they gave away the in-game currency for a while allowed me to pick and choose several heroes that I wanted to give a whirl. Recently, the server has had some trouble and the team has been working around the clock to fix everything, thanks to the reports from the beta program. If you’re looking to play Marvel Heroes on June 4th, all of the problems should be panned out thanks to their great beta program that spanned over a great length of time.

Gameplay for Marvel Heroes is very simple and user-friendly. Each character has basic attacks, and powers which use up “Spirit” (energy) to execute. At default, the basic attack is mapped to the left mouse button, which the player can also use to navigate the map. If the player starts moving around while using their basic attack, they can hold ‘Shift’ to stay put and attack enemies around them. Each power can be mapped to the “A” row of keys on your keyboard or the left mouse button. The order of powers can also be customized. If the gameplay doesn’t suit you due to your keyboards size or your hands can’t stretch far enough, the key bindings are completely customizable in the options menu. I suggest changing the S.H.I.E.L.D medkit’s hotkey from “H” to “Q” for easy access during boss battles. Speaking of boss battles, Marvel Heroes has two types. Bosses appear at the end of every mission with a large range of Marvel Comics villains such as “Shocker”, “The Hood” and “Taskmaster” to name a few of the beginning bosses. However, in the open zones are also “Events” that trigger randomly. In these “Events”, players of Marvel Heroes must gather to one spot and defeat a boss, such as “Venom”, who has a large amount of health and power. Not only does this encourage team-work and party creation in Marvel Heroes, but it also offers great loot for your character. Marvel Heroes has some of the easiest and generic, but fun, gameplay around and is easily accessible for new and old MMORPG players alike.

With a story written by Brian Michael Bendis, it’s hard for me to avoid Marvel Heroes. The fun, lasting gameplay left me addicted and wanting more. The community so far is incredibly generous and often times host/join parties to help players out with tough missions or to power-level your alternate heroes that you bought with the in-game currency. I’d be lying if I said I’m an experienced MMORPG player, because I’m really not. So take that into account while reading this impressions piece, but Marvel Heroes has quickly become one of my favorite superhero gaming experiences and I hope to see a lot of people playing the game. It’s free to play and launches June 4th!

Does it offer a gamepad controller option instead?

What ruins immersion for me is that they outright lied about the super-secret tech they spoke about at the press launch and were going to unveil at a later date - the tech that would make it impossible for multiple iterations of the same character to be on the same team.

So instead of the server having you playing as Wolverine with 5 other different Marvel characters, you ACTUALLY end up with a hulk and 3 other wolverines in addition to your wolverine.

This utterly RUINS the feeling of immersion in a comic universe. The excuse they came up with after it was apparent that the long-awaited super secret tech was just a line of BS was that there has been an event that fractured the time space dimensions (thus allowing a whole team of goddamn wolverines).

Laugh.Out.loud. Bullshit.

It's ok. Personally I like games like APB Reloaded more though. It seems a shame that there aren't more great MMO's out there like APB.

David Brevik knows his ARPGs

@SimyJo

You know you don't have to team up with a bunch of wolverines if you don't want to right? There are a massive amount of players online constantly, and way more than enough different/variation in characters you see to have fun.

Or you could just pick Hulk/Thor and solo everything ;)

basically if you liked Diablo 2 and like Marvel, you will probably love this game

It's not I repeat NOT an MMORPG, I have no idea why they keep pushing it as one. You can't make your own character, you have to play as marvel characters, and you have to BUY with RL money Booster packs to unlock a lot of the other characters... and you can get doubles because like cards you have no idea what you're getting.

Gameplay is not bad, and it is neat but it is not an MMORPG.. it's more like Diablo, but with Marvek Characters.

Sounds very cool, but the MMO thing ruins it for me...game time is ME time!

An MMORPG that doesn't let you create your own character?...Seems legit.

MMO = Mass Multiplayer Online......which it is

nothing about MMO means make your own character

and its an ARPG, not a normal RPG. With 20 something+ characters all with their own skill trees, it is basically 20 + different character classes where most ARPGs have 5-6. There are different build possibilities with every character as well; I ran Jean Grey with a no phoenix build, and it was still fun as hell. Almost everything in the game is available through drops, random yes, but still. The guy saying you have to pay RL money to get a drop is BS.

It's not an MMO if we let this quality of crap slip as an MMO the MMO market might as well just be done. It's not an MMO it's a Multiplayer RPG with online capabilities.

@skot888

Haha. So a MMO comes out that you don't approve of then that means the MMO market might as well just be done? Thats some mighty logic right there.

Everywhere you go except barely a few instances there are lots of other players around you, what the hell do you consider MMO then?

Oh, i get it. In your mind MMO = WoW and nothing else

@DanteSparda.. I understand you're most likely not an actual MMO player, so you don't understand the difference as to what I posted, you're most likely simply a console gamer (lawl) and you're small mind can't grasp the difference.

Any real PC gamer (and IMHO the true gamers.) can tell you it's not an MMORPG.

MMORPG? Dafuq? It's an ARPG like Diablo!

That aside, I'm definitely getting this!

"MMORPG? Dafuq? It's an ARPG like Diablo!

Exactly, it's technically a Lobby game and a ARPG. It actually plays very much like the D1 and D2 games (the superior of the series IMO.) Sadly a lot of console gamers (which to be fair that is what it feels like it's marketed for.) don't know the difference so Gazillion is trying to pull a fast one. People like DanteSparda are prime example.

the best part of DC universe is creating your own hero. If you can't do that in this Marvel game, then I call FAIL

I loved playing the beta version of this thing. My comp needs an update to smooth it out, but it was still fun as hell. This is the only computer game I have been interested in since Doom lol.

It's really fun if you like Action-rpg's. Also good if you love Marvel. win/win for me.

Also: There's been half a dozen or so online games where you create your own [frick]ing hero. I for one am glad that I can play as name people this time.

oh, and DC universe online sucks. Not because it's DC, but because it's shit.

It sounds ok, but I would have liked to have seen something a little more ambitious from Marvel. Dare I say it, something a little more like DCUO...

For example, just the flight power in DCUO can be fun on its own, zipping about all over the place. If the flight power in this game isn't full 3D free flight and instead is just hovering a few inches above the ground in the immediate area, like Ultimate Alliance then it's nerfed and they've missed an opportunity. Again, fighting in DCUO is about skill - pulling off combos, effective use of and management of your powers, etc. If it's a button masher, like Diablo, then that could become very boring very quickly.

I'm not a fan of Diablo (too simplistic, too confined, repetitive button mashing without skill...), so as a selling point that comparison doesn't work for me at all.

PC exclusive also seems a bit daft these days. Putting DCUO on PS3 was a genius move for them - I don't know the figures, but I imagine they've made a mint off DLC and micro-transactions.

Marvel's video game output is wildly erratic and doesn't seem to have any direction at all. This, while seeming quite fun, seems like yet another example of a half-measure release lacking in ambition or vision.

Marvel MMO, fully 3D (not isometric), fully customisable. Please.
KeithM
KeithM - 6/4/2013, 5:14 AM
@norseman: DCUO has its issues, and could be better, it's true, but it's far from rubbish and, as of now, is the best superhero MMO we have. Marvel could have taken the City of Heroes/Champions/DCUO template and made a significant advance on it, but chose not to and instead went in a different direction - a backward direction.

That just seems dumb to me.

I'm a fan of both, and in an ideal world I would play and enjoy both, but at the moment what I've heard about this Marvel game isn't doing it for me. Which is a damned shame and a missed opportunity for Marvel imo.

The important thing to remember is this is not, I repeat not, DCU online or WOW or any number of other MMORPGs. It's Diablo 2 with a Marvel skin. Honestly I prefer it that way. No you can't make your own hero, but honestly I prefer it that way. Who wants to play Arkham Asylum and not be able to play as Batman? It's free so any interest shouldn't be held back by money. Also You have a choice of 5 starting characters for free, but all characters and costumes(I don't know about those tied to the premium pre-order) are supposed to drop randomly for free. My suggestion is try it, if you like it and absolutely have to play as a certain character, buy that character, and get the rest free.
KeithM
KeithM - 6/4/2013, 7:00 AM
@Theophilis: Being free to play is a good thing, but it's not just a matter of what we spend money on - it's also a matter of what we want to spend our TIME on. There are too many games around to play them all, so we have to make decisions about the time we're willing to invest in something. If a game doesn't offer something significantly different or better than what else is around, then it might just go unplayed completely or discarded after not very long.

Unfortunately this offering from Marvel doesn't seem to offer anything significantly different or better than what else is around. Apart from the fact it features Marvel characters. But that just isn't enough in and of itself to make me want to invest any significant time into the game. I've already played too many rubbish games that just happened to have well known characters to be tempted merely by the license. From both companies.

And that's how they'll make money from it - time invested translating into micro-transactions in order to get more out of it. But if I don't get enough out of the basic game to satisfy, then I'm not going to be around long enough to invest in the game enough to want to spend money on micro-transactions...

It isn't comparable to Arkham Asylum either - it's in competition with DCUO, regardless of whether it's the same style or not. DCUO has a significant lead on it, an established player base, is fully 3D with complete freedom of movement, and is available on the PS3. I just don't see enough from this to compete.

I wish it were otherwise, but protestations aside, it's this Marvel have to overcome if they want their game to be a success.
