Rocksteady Talks Batman: Arkham City, Says to Focus on Balancing the Villains!

The marketing manager of Rocksteady, Dax Ginns, talks on their effort to focus on the realism and many other aspects of the villains that will be featured in the upcoming video game sequel. Hit the jump to check it out!

Thanks to VG 24/7 who posted the following words from Dax Ginns, who was talking to Gamasutra:

"It’s something that games often have difficulty doing simply because a big character like Penguin or Joker or Riddler or whatever is usually treated as boss encounter, and you don’t just walk up to a boss and floor them with one punch, but in actuality if Batman was going to throw a punch at the Riddler, he would knock him out."

In its search for 'intimacy' and 'connection' between Batman and his enemies, Rocksteady sought ways to bring villains into Arkham City in way that left scope for interesting gameplay. In the Riddler’s case, he appears frequently as a projected image to taunt and spur Batman on.

"I think that’s kind of a nice, very emotional connection where you really cannot wait to get your hands around his neck. That’s the sort of things we’re talking about, that’s the intimacy we’re really talking about. They’re humans. They’re mortal. Batman’s a mortal guy, but he’s a total badass, so we’ve got to make sure that all of a sudden someone like Riddler doesn’t just develop superhuman strength because it makes gameplay sense. No. Riddler is a smart guy but he’s not a powerhouse, and so the combat between Batman and Riddler exists on the intellectual level."

Rocksteady thinks carefully about its villain choices, and the Riddler’s return isn’t just a repeat performance of his Arkham Asylum puzzles.

"We are, through him, giving ourselves the flexibility to spec out a whole new range of much more physical, much more threatening mortal challenges that he’s constructed that lay on top of the verbal challenges, the puzzles, these quizzes that he sets on Batman. So that personality interpretation of Riddler opens the door to new gameplay opportunities for us, and characters have to meet that criteria before they’ll be included in the game."

Still featuring the voice of Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Tasia Valenza,Wally Wingert, as well as new additions of Tara Strong, Maurice LaMarche, and Stana Katic, Batman: Arkham City is set to be released on October 18, later this year, with a Wii U version to follow!

Cant wait for this game. I dont mind playing with catwoman in my bedroom.
I dont understand the hate secondary charactors in the Batman universe . I like all the robins (Dick, Jason, Tim and Damian) and I enjoy the 3 batgirls (Babs, Cassie and Steph). They add a family and Fatherhood dynamic to Bruce that makes him more obsessed when viewed thru their eyes.
Can someone explain why it seems no one likes them?

@ Dahamma
I agree I enjoyed Spiderman 2 also. If they could bring that back with the dangerroom from part 1 I would never stop playing.

Awesome! I just really hope that the Joker still has an important role in the game.

@Daharama Spiderman 2 was good, but inFamous and Prototype are much better, and they're both classes as superhero games

Yeah, InFamous is my favorite superhero game so far with Arkham Asylum right behind it. Arkham City seems to be giving me exactly what AA was missing and i suspect it definitely will beat InFamous. Spider-man 2 isn't very far behind either ;)

As long as there are NO Joker-Bane stunts like in the first game, this should prove interesting.

cosmicstranger@ Agree on that! Joker can keep his own in fight with Batman without doing something stupid like that!
The end fight was big dissapointment.

Hope they keep the villains in their normal form this time!:) Cant wait!

Arkam Asylum changed the genre of superhero games hands down. Rocksteady Studios took its time and gave us fans something worth while to play with a great look and story, innovative fighting engine, and the ability to use the dark knights detective skills as well. Throw in the cast from Batman the Animated series and you had a masterpiece. I have all the faith in Arkham city as well.

Hated the Joker battle at the end of the game. It just doesn't work for Batman, Boss Battles, none of his biggest enemies are strong enough.

@AlexDeLarge87- Come to think of it, I cannot remember a time when there has been a good fight against the Joker in a video game...so far.
