Wonder Woman Review

Wonder Woman Review

We have seen quite a few animated movies from both Marvel and Dc..some good, some abysmal! But i can safely say that Wonder Woman is the best yet.

Firstly, im not really a Wonder Woman fan..that is, i havnt read many of her comics. In fact the only times i have read any stories involving her were in Justice League or team up comics. That being said i have always liked the character..and after this movie..i love the lady!

Its generally assumed in the fan community that Marvel have DC beat hands down when it comes to live action movie output..which is true in terms of quantity, but not quality. For every Iron Man, theres an Elektra..every X2 a Ghost Rider! Im not saying DC havnt released they'r fair share of dodgy movies (Batman and Robin anyone?) but i think its a bit of an unfair assumtion. Ill tell you what i KNOW for a certainty, as far as animated movies go, DC really take Marvel to the cleaners. Wonder Woman is the 4rth animated movie (the others being the impressive New Frontier, Superman:Doomsday and Gotham Knights) from DC..and like they'r habit of releasing a slew of live action..Marvel have at least 6 animated. They vary in quality..actually im being kind, the only one that is is of a high quality is the latest, Hulk Vs..and even that does not stand up favorably to Wonder Woman. I mean its all about the quality..in every aspect. Wonder Woman boasts voice talent like Nathon Fillion, Virginia Madsen, Rosario Dawson and Alfred Molina, as well as simply gorgeous animation by Bruce Timm. Lets look at the Godawful Avengers movies by Marvel. Voice cast by the likes of..emmm..NOBODY, and the animation looks like something from early Simpsons episodes(i might be exaggerating..a tad!)..word of advice Marvel, spend a few quid next time and maybe watching your movies wont be an experience akin to watching back to back episodes of Superfriends!

Anyway, rant over! On to the review. The plot of the movie is based on George Perez' reboot of the character, specifically the "Gods and Mortals" arc that started the character's second volume back in 1987. On the mystical island of Themyscira, a proud and fierce warrior race of Amazons have raised a daughter of untold beauty, grace and strength: Princess Diana. When an Army fighter pilot, Steve Trevor, crash-lands on the island, the rebellious and headstrong Diana defies Amazonian law by accompanying Trevor back to civilization. Meanwhile, Ares (the god of War) has escaped his imprisonment at the hands of the Amazons and has decided to exact his revenge using the mystical “Hand of Rage,” an ancient artifact with the power to raise armies from the dead and infuse them with a thirst for blood. Ares intends to start a world war that will not only last for centuries – but will wipe out every living being on the planet, starting with the Amazons. It is up to Princess Diana to save her people and the world – by using her gifts and becoming the ultimate Wonder Woman.

One of the first things that struck me about the movie was how violent it is. The opening battle scene really is visceral. Theres even a couple of decapitations thrown in for good measure. Another thing is the great (sometimes shocking) humor that runs through the movie. Like i said before the animation is just a joy to behold and all of the voice actors are on top of ther game. I cant recommend this movie highly enough to both Wonder Woman and comic fans in general..see it folks, you wont be dissapointed.

Nice article man. Very well done and it really does make me want to see this one now. I have NEVER been a fan of Wonder Woman except the "Kingdom Come" and "Bullets & Bracelets" (even though she wasn't really Wonder Woman) incarnations as she was a total badass. But other than that, I've just never dug the character. I know she really is kind of cool, but I just can't get over the cheesiness she represents, and that DAMN LASSO!

But this definitely makes this a must-see in the animated department. Maybe it will entice me to pick up a few WW comics at the good ole Half Price Books. That place is awesome, 1 dollar comics. Freakin' AMAZING. Not crappy comics either, GOOD ones, from A-Z including the Cival War, World War Hulk, 52 etc. I can get all 52 issues of 52 for less than 50 bucks because of the discount you get for buying so damned many items. That place is great. Walk in with 11 bucks, walk out with 10 comics (tax sucks)

Ion - to each their own... I happen to be a big fan of our local Amazonian princess (thanks to my wife - but I will admit, some of the 'golden age' stuff does read as a bit hoaky to the modern reader). I will agree with you that 'bass-assed' WW is by far the best and am looking forward to seeing this adaptation...

Where is this mystical place you speak of where comics are less than a buck? Is this an on-line thing, or local store (in which case, THANKS for rubbing it in our faces!)? C'mon, share with the group...

They're a national franchise. They have locations in AZ, CA, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, MN, MO, NE, OH, OK, PA, TX, WA and WI. Here's the store locator.
http://www.halfpricebooks.com/find_a_store.html

You're welcome for the rub though... It's a used book store, and they have a great assortment of comics for a dollar a pop. From the 70's on. Whatever people don't want to read anymore, they sell it to Half Priced Books, and I buy them for a dollar. Occasionally more for some things, but that's rare. They also have tons of Graphic Novels etc. Again, it's a Use book store, so the selection is different in every location.

I actually spent 2 - 3 hours about 2 weeks ago thumbing through EVERY SINGLE BOX of comics they have looking for GL comics. I did find the entire 5 part run of the Recharge Mini series, which was awesome. PLus Vol 3 #0 and Vol 3 #55 which included Alan Scott in a much more modern and BADASS looking uniform, still the same colors as the original Golden Age fit, just cooler.

You're making me miss the first comic shop I went to back in the '80's. He had a big wall of comics that ran the length of the shop and everything was 3 for $1.00. There were thousands of books there, mostly DC and Marvel. That was where I built a lot of the back issue depth of my collection, including a lot of great Silver Age stuff. The older stuff was in a little rougher shape, but it was great if you cared more about reading them than grading them. Sadly, the owner moved away, and the shop closed.

Anyway, I'm leaning towards buying the Wonder Woman DVD, and am glad to see good reviews for it. I'd appreciate anyone else here who has seen it to put in their two cents.

Does anyone think Wonder Woman in the poster looks like Claudia Black from Farscape and Stargate?

I just got done watching it, and I was impressed. Definatley raising the bar for animated movies. It felt like I was watching an animated version of the shortened script they have in mind for the Wonder Woman live action movie. Plenty of action and dark humor as stated in the review. Definatley worth watching.

Iron man and Dr stange was kinda crapy, i havent seen Batman so I cant judge, Im just sayin that Hulk vs wolverine in particular was the 1st time I remember wolverine actually was cuttin in to people rather than just their weapons, it gets no cooler thatn that. the one thing i truely bellive in is that the Mass Majority of Comic Fans either have a bias torwds DC or Marvel, and im a marvel person, still like DC but i keep up with marvel faithfully.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/23/2009, 2:08 PM
zinext it is indeed better than Hulk Vs..which was to me just half a movie, i thought Hulk Vs Wolverine was very good but far too rushed to squeeze in the very disapointing Thor part.

Rorschach01 u are right That it was just half a movie, i still liked the thor however, but Im still gonna go buy Wonder Woman tho. Thanks for the review.

You're quite welcome Adamant. I absolutely LOVE HPB, we have 4 in Columbus and I frequent them ALL. I have one in particular on Lane Ave on the OSU campus that I frequent the most often as I find it has the best selection. But, still, Half Price Books is a great place.

Some of the best stuff they have is old, I mean OLD, original prints of books like The Wizard of Oz, Catcher IN the Rye, Grapes of Wrath, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn etc, that sell for many many dollars, but are well worth it. The shops are good, the people are friendly and quite helpful, and they have EVERY possible genre of books you can think of. Plus CD's, DVD's, Vinyls etc. I can only hope the other branches are as well stocked, laid out and maintained as the ones here are. If they are, I'm SURE you will be a frequenter of them too. Damn, I sound like I work for the place or something. Maybe I should get a job there, it would be awesome.

hey great job on the movie review man, i downloaded it last night and watched it and it was excellent. the DC movies usually are really good, the artistry is always amazing. the voicing was very well done also. i like that alfred molina was the bad guy. he did a great doc ock for spidey 2.

another lil tid bit, keri russell(wonder woman) and nathan fillion(steve) starred in another movie called waitress

I downloaded the film last Saturday, and I have to admit that the film's level was quite good, but I ended it a bit dissapointed. I don't want to spoil the people who has not seen it yet, but there were some actions and things in the film which don't fit with the comic history despite my desires of a loyal comic adaptation. Once more people has seen the film, I will reveal those faults.

I saw the film just now and i really liked it. everything about the film was good especially the fighting sequences wich were cool and also the way the origin was told, the movie didn't drag and it had a great cast. Wonder woman can deliver! In response to the marvel/dc competition in animated films i agree that marvel's films, need's to have better and longer action sequences.Hulk vs thor/wolverine were a little better and as far the avengers? i wasn't too happy with the action. I mean it's The Avengers! But marvel's focus is on the story telling and the meaning of how they became to be superheroes.not only that but they make them for all audiences of all ages but especially for younger viewer's. Wich makes sense that it wont be as dark as some of the dc films. Im sure the upcoming live action films are going to be different. when i say different i mean BETTER! Just look how well IRON MAN and THE INCREDIBLE HULK were! Dc animated films are darker and a little violent. Superman vs doomsday action was good but the story wasn't that great, the batman short films i liked, it told how bruce was evolving more into the batman persona. Justice League frontier film i did not like it at all. I fast foward to the fighting scenes. But above all, i hope marvel and dc come out with great Avengers and Justice League movies in the future cause we all love them both.

Weel, seeing that most of the folks have indeed seen the film, I will comment the aspects I don't like, besides a not-flying Wonder Woman:

1-Although the introduction is very good, it is also very different to the comic, which included the amazons creation and the Heracles episode.

2- The invisible plane's origin is not explained. They could have say that it is Steve Trevor's plane touched by that Hepkaestus's mirror or something like that; to me is an unlikely achievement of amazon technology in an isolated island.

3-If Ares masterplan is simply call back his henchmen and lay waste to humanity... I had imagined something more subtle, fine, psichological; like deceiving world's military leaders into a world war 3.

4-Amazons coming from their island to aid in the final battle against the forces of evil, it's not logical, but almost OK (although steals prominence from WW). But coming in ships without sails? Physics and comics don't fit very well at all :)

Even so, I like the voice acting, the action scenes are impressive and I enjoyed very much Steve's landing on Themiscyra.

Im not too sure about the no flying thing..i guess they made it so she has yet to aquire that skill..ala Smallville.

Merinator like i said i have never read her origin in the comics so cant comment on how accurate the movie was in that respect.

When Wonder Woman was being created goddesses & 1 god gave her gifts:

Aphrodite gave her beauty & a loving heart.

Athena granted her wisdom.

Hestia gave her the power to open mens hearts to help them heed her message of peace.

Gaea, Mother Earth, gave her life.

Demeter gave her amazing strength.

Artmis, the goddess of hunt, granted her the eyes of a hunter & ability to communicate with any beast from anywhere.

Hermes, the messenger of the gods & only male god, gave her the power of flight and speed.

Later, Wonder Woman's bracelets were forged by Hephaestus from the shards of Zeus's Aegis (shield) as prize for the most worthy Amazon.

Wonder Woman has vehicles of every type at her disposal- the only element they have in common is that they are INVISIBLE. All these wheeled, flying, or submerging vehicles are different aspects of the same miraculous machine. The super advanced technology came from an alien world and is capable of transforming into any vehicle Wonder Woman wishes for, whether she chooses to travel in an invisible jet, a deep-sea submersible, wonder-cylce or a horse drawn battle chariot.

The Lansanarians were mankinds oldest ancestors of 40,000 years ago. After gaining the Lansanarians technology Diana learned that it was part of an extraterrestrial artifact called The Ring. Together with Hercules, in his guise of Champion, Wonder Woman saved Lansinar & Earth from disaster. In their gratitude they gave the amazing artifact to WonderWoman that would become her invisible jet. This technology even briefly adapted itself to become the WonderDome, Diana's floating base, above Gateway City. Winged Chariots could be detached from the Dome's superstructure to convey visitors back & forth to the Themyscirian-insprired structure.

The Invisible Jet harnesses graviton particles-electrically-neutral, gravity-defying quantom particles- for subsonic propulsion through air and space. If stranded in orbit, the jet can reprocess Diana's breath for up to 2 hours of breathable air.

I still have yet to see the movie but I wanted to put it out there how she got her powers & the technology she used for the invisible jet to better explain it for those who were not too familiar with the Wonder Woman background. Though when she was being molded & given the gift of flight & speed at the time of her creation & would use it, the TV show never showed her flying other than to show her jumping up to a building or something. Only in the comics do you see her fly. In the movie back in '74 she didnt have any powers at all. I hoped it helped.

Thanks for the info keepitreal, i did know a few bits and pieces but that ties it all together. They will prob make Diana a 17 year old high school student that finds magic arm bands or something

How about this one for the Wonder Woman role?

If I rememeber well, she played the female General Zod's minion in Smallville. The comments are in spanish, but that won't be a problem.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!! I will NOT have a rehashing of the 'The Incredible Hulk Returns' POS made-for TV movie! Do any of you remember that? It's the one where David Banner meets a former student named Don Blake (hmmmm....) who found a 'magical hammer' that summons Thor, a Viking warrior prevented from entering Valhalla (not a Norse God!). I can only imagine the 'Wonder Woman' equivilant...

Well, I have seen the movie once more, in case I missed some details, but I think I haven't changed my mind. One thing I have to say positively about the movie is that most of people have enjoyed it, and that is the very best.
Not only because this is cinema objective, but also it should cheer up whoever is actually developing the movie with real actors, and also encourage the Justice League film project.
