During an interview with The Guardian, James Cameron (Aliens, Titanic, Avatar) had a few controversial things to say about the Wonder Woman movie, and, more specifically, what he feels is the misguided "self-congratulatory back-patting" that's been going on since the film's release .

Cameron believes that the character of Diana is an "objectified icon", and that her current status as a symbol for strong, empowered women is actually a "step backwards".

Well, as you can imagine, the movie's direcor had a thing or two to say about that.

Here's Patty Jenkins' response from late last night:

Though most of you guys tended to disagree with Cameron's comments, some could see where he was coming from. What's your take on Jenkins' response?

@CipherGuard - Cameron has a point as he directed two of the most popular female heroin lead movies in history(Aliens, T2)...which I have seen 5 times(in theaters)...WW was great but it is overrated in many ways!

@incredibleTalk - Yeah but in that regard, they're mostly popular with men. I honestly don't come across a lot of women who look up to Ripley or Sarah as much as other female characters. And just because his characters are popular doesn't necessarily prove his point over Patty. What she is saying is that WW is strong but not in the masculine way of other action heroes.

@incredibleTalk - It's not about the films though, it's about the characters themselves. I love both Ripley and Sarah Connor, but Patty Jenkins does have a point, if we can only see ultra-tough, hardened action women as strong role models for women, then we're limiting ourselves.

@incredibleTalk - 100% WRONG

Sarah Conner and Wonder-Woman was two complete opposites of female characters.
Wonder Woman was from the 1940's representing World War II where women stayed home. Women weren't even allowed to join arm services. Wonder-Woman was a comic book movie and the director did a great job sticking to the origin story. 5 STAR MOVIE

Conner was future living in the 80's and women did serve. Makes a big difference. Cameron is wrong.

AND Wonder-Woman is a God trying to look like and fit in with the women of that time period.

@Equivocal - Whether or not the movie was overrated is entirely irrelevant. This is purely about how the film portrayed feminism.
