EDITORIAL: The Top 10 Moments From The X-MEN Movies

FOX’s X-Men films have had their fair share of up and downs over the years, but there’s no denying there’s been some great moments along the way. This is the last in a trio of articles looking at the highlights of some of our favourite superhero franchises. Click to check it out!

For better or for worse, 20th Century Fox’s X-Men movies have been the one mainstay in the comic book movie industry over the last fifteen years. While they have come under heavy criticism for taking liberties with certain characters and source material, several rank as some of the finest CBMs ever made – impressing through underlying themes of oppression and equality.

Indeed, many cite Bryan Singer’s 2000 hit X-Men as the start of the current ‘Age Of Superheroes’. Finding the right blend between dark and campy, the first movie was a hit with kids and adults alike. Since then, the franchise has been plagued by inconsistency. However, the last few years have seen a rejuvenation of the series, thanks to the likes of X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days Of Future Past - with the much anticipated X-Men; Apocalypse and Deadpool movies on their way in 2016.

Anyway, without further ado, let’s have a look at my favourite moments from the mutant franchise...

Honourable Mentions

Don’t Get In My Way, X-Men

“We are the future Charles, not them. They no longer matter.” - Magneto

Professor Xavier and Magneto’s friendship-turned-rivalry represents the core of the X-Men franchise, and has produced some of its best moments. This scene introduces the pair perfectly, as two mutant intellectuals with very different ideals – while paving the way for the inevitable war that lies ahead.

Wolverine's Beserker RageX2: X-Men United

“You picked the wrong house, bub!” – Wolverine

This is a scene that’ll probably get into most of your own Top 10 lists – with great action and Hugh Jackman in explosive form. But perhaps what I love most about this moment is how it was foreshadowed in the first movie: when Xavier claimed to “feel a great swell of pity” for anyone who came to his school “looking for trouble”. He was so right.

Charles Xavier: Past & FutureX-Men: Days Of Future Past

“Charles, we need you to hope again.” – Professor X

If Michael Fassbender was the star of First Class, James McAvoy stole the limelight during the sequel. He was simply phenomenal as this new side of Xavier – one devoid of hope. Juxtapose that with the ever-impressive Patrick Stewart as the wise, inspiring Professor X we all know and love, and you’re guaranteed to have a corker of a scene.

The Merc With A Mouth, X-Men Origins: Wolverine

“Okay… People are dead.” – Wade Wilson

I liked Ryan Reynolds as Wade - almost as much as I hated “The Pool”. He was witty, charming and clearly psychopathic – nearly everything you’d expect from the Merc With A Mouth. While the CGI (like the rest of the movie) is horribly off, this ‘classically Deadpool’ mass-murder spree almost makes the film worth watching. Almost.

Top 10

10) Logan Vs Shingen, The Wolverine

“What kind of a monster are you?” – Shingen
“The Wolverine.” – Logan

Hugh Jackman and James Mangold managed to top the X2 beserker moment with this incredibly intense sequence in 2013’s The Wolverine. While the film had its ups and downs, the tone was almost perfect - and the fight scenes that didn’t involve a giant robot were second to none. Here, Logan battles the movie’s best villain, Shingen, in a fast-paced and brutal fight to the death.

9) The Recruitment Montage, X-Men: First Class

“Go [frick] yourself.” – Logan

X-Men: First Class is my favourite X-Men film. While I loved X2 & Days Of Future Past, for me, no one got the tone, characters and story more correct than Matthew Vaughn did in his 2011 flick. While the movie had its fair share of drama and emotion, it was also a lot of fun – highlighted by this montage more than anything else. Meanwhile, that cameo had me in stitches.

8) House Fire Fight, X2: X-Men United

“You know all the dangerous mutants you hear about on the news? I’m the worst one.” – Pyro

Arguably ‘the forgotten mutant’ of the original trilogy, Pyro was one of the standout characters of X2 and The Last Stand. His cocky act was entertaining, but there was always that element of the scared kid beneath all the bravado. Though he went on to show great chemistry alongside Magneto, this was the moment in which he truly burst onto the scene – producing a truly badass display of raw (fire)power.

7) The Brotherhood Begins, X-Men: First Class

“Erik, I believe?” – Emma Frost
“I prefer… Magneto.” – Erik Lensherr

I love Ian McKellan, but my favourite Magneto may well be Michael Fassbender. Broken and dangerous, his hateful anti-hero claimed all of the best moments in First Class. While the actual context of this scene still irks me a little (I don’t like the idea of Emma Frost in The Brotherhood), the execution was damn near perfect, and moment is made complete by Henry Jackman’s pulsating ‘Magneto’ theme in the background.

6) That Quicksilver Scene, X-Men: Days Of Future Past

“They say you can manipulate metal. My mom used to know a guy who could do that.” – Pietro Maximoff

This is a fan-favourite moment from Days Of Future Past, particularly on this site. I confess that I, like many of you, was pretty sceptical about Evan Peters’ Quicksilver coming in to this movie. However, it’s safe to say he and Bryan Singer proved us all wrong with this truly scintillating scene alone - bolstered by some impressive visuals filmed at a staggering 3600 frames-per-second.

5) Charles Is Paralyzed, X-Men: First Class

“I won’t, actually I… I can’t feel my legs… I can’t feel my legs…” – Charles Xavier

Oomph! Right in the feels. I love this scene, the pain, the sorrow, the regret… I guess I’m just a bit of a sadist right? In all seriousness James McAvoy’s acting here is superb - from convincing an emotional Erik they are not the same, to shockingly realising he can no longer move his legs. It’s an iconic moment, and one that has stuck with me since I first watched the film, three years ago.

4) Prison Chess, X-Men

“The war is still coming Charles, and I intend to fight it – by any means necessary.” – Magneto
“And I will always be there, old friend.” – Professor X

It’s P-Stew Vs. I-Mac, round 2! I feel like I’ve just ruined the moment there, sorry… This scene really showcases the complexity and longevity of Magneto & Professor X’s relationship. Both are natural leaders and intellectual equals, it’s obvious how they gravitated towards one another - but they have their clear differences too. If there’s one thing the FOX films got right, it’s the dynamic between these two legends.

3) That Nightcrawler Scene, X2: X-Men United

“My God…” – President McKenna

Nightcrawler’s badass one-man invasion of the White House is one of the greatest openings to a CBM ever. It’s still being talked about today! Containing some groundbreaking fight choreography and great visual effects, it’s makes for a fantastic action spectacle. It’s a shame we never saw any more of him, as he was arguably the standout character of X2.

2) Frankenstein’s Monster, X-Men: First Class

“Let’s just say I’m Frankenstein’s Monster. And I’m looking for my creator.” – Erik Lensherr

Throughout the series, Magneto has had a great many badass moments, but none rank higher than his brutal interrogation and execution of two Nazi’s in an Argentinian pub. Fassbender is truly frightening as the vindictive future Magneto, while Henry Jackman’s score again only makes the moment even more epic. The tension, the acting, the music, the quote – this scene has the lot.

1) The X-Men’s Final Stand, X-Men: Days Of Future Past

“All those years wasted fighting each other, Charles... to have a precious few of them back...” – Magneto

And so we come to it at last… No moment quite epitomises the X-Men series as much as this tear-jerking finale. Left with no hope of survival, they face their greatest enemy - the malevolence of mankind. The action is simply stunning, while there’s nothing more emotional than watching the likes of Storm, Iceman, Magneto and countless others fall in their final heroic stand against the brutal and terrifying Sentinels.

Also, as a little bonus, I thought I’d list my favourite X-Men films in order too…

X-Men: First Class
X-Men: Days Of Future Past
X2
The Wolverine
X-Men

X-Men: The Last Stand
X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Sorry! Couldn't resist it ;)

Well, there you go guys! Those were my ten favourite moments from the X-Men franchise. On another note, this’ll probably the last of these I’ll do in a while. I have LOVED all of your feedback and support throughout this process. I’m sure I’ll be back with more stuff… I not sure what, yet, but it’ll definitely be... stuff.

Anyway, d’you agree with these moments? Let me know your thoughts and choices in the comments, and if you liked this, then hit the big red thumbs-up!

Awesome editorial @Minty!

I would've added the extended Black Clan fight scene from the Wolverine, and the funeral scene... But that's just because I LOVED The Wolverine.

1. DOFP and Wolverine
2. X2
3. X-Men
4. First Class
5. Last Stand
6. Origins

You missed the one where Wolverine discovers the newly restored future in DOFP. That to me is one of, if not the greatest scene in X-Men movies. After so much death and destruction, we get to know that everything turned out alright for our heroes, and in a much more comic accurate present. I'd like to see more of the future X-Men in and X-Men 4, but this was a great send off for actors who have poured so much time into their respective characters.

You know what MY favorite moment was? It hasn't happened yet, because the films suck so far! *Rim-shot*

In all seriousness the entirety of 'First Class' was my favorite moment. Only film Fox has done right in terms of X-Men.

and the Wolverine vs Black clan extended edition is a must see.

Excellent article. My favourite moment is easily the "Training Montage" from X-Men: First Class, capped off by the incredible moment between Erik and Charles, where he conjures up Erik's happiest memory, that makes me tear up a bit every time and the film itself ALWAYS delivers every time I return to watch it. First Class is EASILY one of my top 5 favourite comic-book movies, everything just felt right and I hope that Matthew Vaughn can return as a director for another X-Men film, if not, any other comic-book film that would fit his taste because he is a phenomenal director. I could list tons of my favourite moments from First Class, but that memory scene is one that I will never forget, Fassbender should have got an Oscar nomination/win for that role, I thought he was just as brilliant as Heath Ledger was in The Dark Knight.

1st place: Best thing for Xmen franchise and wasn't even in a xmen movie…
Deadpool Test Footage!

2nd place: goes to Wolverine Berzerker Hallway scene in X2…

3rd place: goes to Night Crawler Scene at the beginning of X2.
Vadakin
Vadakin - 10/6/2014, 1:46 PM
Uh...how about the very first scene of the very first movie? Young Magneto being separated from his parents by the Nazis and displaying his power for the first time. It's a nigh-on perfect introduction to a superhero movie concept that tells you everything you need to know about the X-Men universe in a way that can be easily grasped by the audience. It was later recreated for First Class.

@thejon93rd

Can't say I disagree. Fassbender's performance in that film is still one of his best but since it's a comic book movie many people don't acknowledge just how great he really was.

That ninja fight with Wolverine in the unrated version should be up there, such a great fight scene.

And Banshee first time flying in the sky too

First one that pops into my head was that night crawler scene in the whitehouse......so gooooood.

1. White House Invasion, X2
2. Quicksilver scene, DOFP
3. Mansion Invasion, X2
4. Charles and Erik exchange on jet, DOFP
5. Bobby and Parents, X2
6. Wolverine intro in bar, X-men
7. Erik Nazi hunting Montage, First Class
8. Wolverine and Beast exchange at Mansion, DOFP
9. Xmen final stand against the Modern Sentinals
10. (Tie) Nightcrawler/Mystique exchange and Magneto/Pyro exchange in X2

List of movies
1. X2 has the action scenes, gets all the characters right and has the great moments of social commentary. By far the best.
2. X-Men: DOFP. If only it had bigger balls and more to say.
3. X-Men: First Class: If not for the silly ending (Singer would never had done it that way) and Emma Frost was just wrong.
4. X-Men, So much with so little.
5. Wolverine. Too bad the ending made us throw the baby out with the bath water. Ruined everything.
6. X-men: the last stand. I'd pay Singer to just tell us what he would have done instead. Who friggin wrote that movie?
7. Wolverine: origins. Shows that you don't give a good director a job just for a pay check. That guy should never do another movie again.

@MantiniuMan agreed. missing the nasi coin through Shaw's melon is a blunder and has to be a top 3 moment.

@Vadakin agreed. It set up the whole franchise. The 'weight' that most of the MCU films and certainly FOX Four and "Amazing" have yet to capture.

@minty. Solid article again, but sadly for the points mentioned above you fail. I'm a tough grader, what can I say ;-)

SWEET!! Yes! and Thank you!
Great stuff

Surely this had to be the hardest one- so many great ones to pick. Could probably have enough for at 20.

My top X-Men moments:

HM- Prison chess (X-Men)
HM- Logan stabs Rogue (X-Men)
HM- Young Angel tries to tear off his wings (X3)
HM- Bobby Ices Up (X3)
HM- Charles trains the students montage (X-Men FC)
HM- Bullet through the head (X-Men FC)
HM- Logan vs Shingen (The Wolverine)

10. Erik and Charles recruit young Jean (X3)
9. Frankenstein's Monster (X-Men First Class)
8. Bullet train (The Wolverine)
7. Magneto moves the bridge(X3)
6. Cage Fight: the Wolverine intro (X-Men)
5. That Quicksilver Scene (X-Men DoFP)
4. Erik's memory/ Moving the dish. (X-Men First Class)
3. Raid on the Mansion/Wolverine's Beserker Rage (X2)
2. White House Attack (X2)
1. The Senate Hearing (X-Men)
Kind of an extension of the "Don't get in my Way" scene. "There are even rumors of mutants so powerful they can enter our minds and control our thoughts...taking away our God-given free will." Kelly's debate laid the ground work that this was going to be a very "real-world" type of movie. And it made me giddy that the X-Men had finally come to life on the big screen. I loved the introduction of Jean Grey, Xavier in the back, and Magneto in the shadows.

A simple moment, but I always loved the line from the first X-Men, right after Wolverine wakes up at the mansion for the first-time, and Xavier introduces him to Jean Grey, Cyclops and "Storm". He turns to Xavier soon after and asks, "What do they call you? Wheels?" If I recall, from the director's commentary, that was an improvised line from Hugh Jackman. Someone mentioned this already, but the scene where Logan wakes up in the corrected future was another great scene as well. Biggest smile on my face throughout, nearly teared me up to see Jean and Scott again. That after credits scene, with a young Apocalypse moving the pyramids was jaw-dropping, literally left me chilled by the time the scene had ended, he's gonna be such a great villain when it comes to this next instalment.

Where is the Charles meets Charles scene from Days of..?

Why would the Charles beach scene be there over something like that?

Frankensteins monster-AWESOME Scene!

Quicksilver-One of the greatest CBM scenes of all-time!

House Fire Fight? Really? Good scene but the Mansion Invasion scene was a better, more classic example from that film...

Xmen-2 is a truly great CBM. Great filmmaking, great story. Not many flaws in that film

First Class- Same thing, great story, nice pace. Solid

Thanks for all the comments so far guys! Like I said in the article, I have loved all your feedback. Also some of you have some really great suggestions too - I guess the biggest problem with doing a Top 10 list is that you can only pick 10 moments!

Another big thanks to @BatManiac, @RebelVulcan, @GliderMan, @MantiuMan, @0megaDaGod, @WesleyGibson, @Odin, @DanteSparda, @DedPool for all the kind words and/or memes! :)

@MercwithMouth - Thanks as always man, I still haven't seen the extended cut of The Wolverine yet. I liked the movie, but I imagine I'll enjoy that even more

@Doopie - Cheers Doop! It's a shame you're not a big fan of FC though, I've always found it the most entertaining. But we'll agree to disagree mate!

@ScottMontgomery - Haha, then it's done its job! Man I love that film... and that quote!

@MrBlackjack - Cheers bro! I've really appreciated your support throughout these editorials. I'll take that Ron Burgundy gif as the highest of praise!

@Pasto - Haha! I'm sure my article appreciated being violated by your thumb Pasto... :P

@thejon93rd - Cheers man. You're not on your own in thinking Fassbender's First Class performance was Oscar worthy. It's one of my favourite CBM performances of all time

@Scorpion8125 - Lol, no worries Scorp, I remember that scene as well :P

@xcan - Thanks I guess? In all seriousness there were just not enough spots for not enough great moments.

@SauronsBANE - Thanks as always bro! Haha, then my article has done it's job!

@staypuffed - Cheers for the kind words man. I've really enjoyed making these, while comments like yours make all the hard work worth it!

@dethpillow - You know what, I agree the Angel bathroom was a good scene. I guess cause it was in the Last Stand it just slipped my mind. Nice spot man

@RobGrizzly - Dude, no problem, thanks for all your support throughout these editorials! I agree the Senate Hearing as a whole is a fantastic scene - really sets up the concept of mutants vs humanity. Tbh while I probs won't do another (for a little while), I may return at some point in the future with a Spider-Man one. But seriously man, I'm glad you've enjoyed this, and thanks for all the kind words!
