James Mangold On How THE WOLVERINE Will Differ From "Standard Superhero Sagas"

In the following snippet from an interview with Total Film, director James Mangold talks about The Wolverine's source material - The "Japan Saga" by Chris Claremont - and how it makes this story stand out from the norm. He also explains how setting the film in Japan makes it so unique..

James Mangold has been promising that we will see a very different breed of CBM when The Wolverine hits theaters, and while chatting with Total Film magazine he continues to do so. The site has posted the following excerpt from their interview, in which the director once again suggests we are in for a unique superhero experience, hinting at inner turmoil and conflict as opposed to the usual "big bad" formula.

“The graphic novel is so adventurous. It plunges into these ideas of destiny, honour and revenge - as opposed to your standard superhero sagas, which are generally about some gigantic villain out to destroy the Earth, a city or a football stadium. Japan’s such an exotic location, in the sense that language and culture play such a huge role in the movie. Usually you don’t find that at all in these kinds of films. To be staking out our own ground and be saying something unique was really liberating for me.”

I think it's fair to say that Mangold has put a lot of pressure on himself to deliver the goods with this one, but I for one am optimistic. A trailer should go a long way to solidifying opinions one way or another, and we'll be getting one very soon. For much more on The Wolverine be sure to pick up the latest issue of Total Film, on sale now.

He was most def referring to "The Avengers" and "The Dark Knight Rises" there!

...I like it! lol

Fox is truly going to get things right. It may not be 100% but I'm truly motivated that they are trying to get things right for their own slice of Marvel Studios.

Most anticipated films for me this summer in order are...

The Wolverine
Man of Steel
Kick-Ass 2
Iron Man 3
Pacific Rim

Cap looked like a fool in The Avenger's. A fool. Should have modernized his WW2 outfit because he is a super soldier not a super gymnast.

Hopefully Mangold will mix traditional Samurai Face Mask & Armor to give Logan a look that resembles his Brown & Yellow out fit and mask. This could become a ceremonial armor or mask he starts wearing in big battles and wears it in DofP.

Hoping this is starts the official solo WOLVERINE series with hardly any ties to X-Men. Hopefully we'll see the suit. Wondering if this film and DOFP will have any references to the FF reboot?

Wolverine's actual costume will not work on film. Cap's costume in Avengers looked like a pair of pajamas.

DAMN, dat Avengers and TDKR jab!

Love ya Mangold but that was uncalled for.

Still love the direction this is headed in! Sounds very unique.

What bold new direction?

In the above picture he has Katana / Samurai sword. So he's going to fight a Samurai with mutant powers. Superheros tend fight rather than chat around a cup of coffee, so where's this new direction?

Bring the trailer first before taking jabs at other films that have already reached the billion dollar mark.

*Director very confident about his project, casually references being unique compared to other projects*

*Users hate confidence and insult director for even slightly mentioning the flaws of other work*

I just see a bunch of jCameron's on that Train 'LOLing' away like a bafoon.

I feel this will be better than Wolverine Origins for sure, BUT, nothing or anything close to the City or Stadium's being attacked, NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Mangold may make some personal achievements out of this film, but Fox will fail over all as always, simple.

Dude, I ain't looking for a fight with you, but how is this guy showing confidence? We haven't seen anything from this film that could get you remotely excited. A dude standing around in a black suit and pants is something to use as an example to point fingers at this?

No one is hating anything besides the fact we are sick of these X-Men related movies feeling nothing like the source. Forgive some of us if we are looking for something different this time around.

Personally, I was fine with Cap's Costume in Avengers, is it perfect? No. Could it be improved upon or better? Yes. But it's good for what it is & is more tan fine or passable for the film.

Like DurtyTalynt said, at least Marvel Studios attempt their characters costumes.

When Fox attempt the Black, Blue & Yellow, the Brown & Yellow or hell, even the Black & Grey if they're too scared about bright colours / want to stay 'Dark', then give me a shout.

Fox & their Director's, Producer's & other Talents on board have NO BALLS to attempt on Comic looking costumes.

The only costume Wolverine has probably taking to Japan with him is his Black Jump Suit or a White Vest & Jeans.

No need to worry about the suit gang. Marvel will be sure to update the suit. It would only be logical to do so.

The suit in Winter Soldier will put all this dissing of the suit to rest; however, that can't be said for Wolverine. If Singer doesn't grow some gonads, and make a good source based suit there is no hope for these X-films in MY eyes (not speaking for anyone else).

The thing I like about Fox's X-Men now is that there's a low level of connectivity between them. It means, as a viewer, I can pick and choose which films are 'canon', and which I want to ignore, without it impacting the overall story.

I have very high hopes for The Wolverine, and I think it may be one of the four X-Men movies I choose to accept, along with First Class, X-Men and X2. It's also comforting because I'm pretty apprehensive about Days of Future Past, so I can ignore it if it turns out to be crap.

It's similar to the Superman movies I guess. I can ignore Superman III and IV because they're shit. Most other series' are too closely linked to ignore any of them and still flow logically.
