X-Men: First Class Opening Scene Details

As usual, SPOILER WARNING. But if you don't mind knowing how Mathew Vaughn's movie will open, read on. Plus, the director comments on those hideous poster that were released a while back..

Want one more spoilerfic scene description from Empire? Course ya do! This time the magazine details what happens in the opening scene of the movie. As we already knew, it begins with a flashback to Auschwitz, and a recreation of the young Magneto scene from the first X-Men. But we also learn about what's going on with the young Xavier, and get confirmation that Sebastian Shaw(Kevin Bacon) is a part of Magneto's origins..

"It starts with the recreation of the bold young-Magneto-at-Auschwitz scene that opened Singer's X-Men back in 2000, progressing to an introduction to Xavier as a child, discovering a young, homeless and shapeshifting Mystique rooting around his kitchen for food, and then heads back to Auschwitz for a raw, intense segment in which Shaw(played by Bacon with grey hair and a creepy tache) coerces a young Erik into unleashing his powers."

Empire go on to describe the vibe of the scene, and comment on some of the special effects used..

"It's uncompromising stuff, augmented with brilliant effects and is even slightly disturbing. It immediately sets X-Men: First Class apart from the DayGlo superhero fare coming our way this Summer, and is a world away from teh Mutants 90210 approach that could have been taken."

Vaughn himself follows this up with..

"I can't imagine Thor or Green Lantern starting like that! That's the fun of it. I can imagine people going "What the [frick]?" But I didn't want to make the kiddie version of X-Men"

Empire also ask Vaughn about those two posters that were universally torn apart. His response?

"It's not my job to market the film" He says diplomatically

[frick] all you Fist Ass loving sheeps. Its you people that keep pumping money into Fox Studios and allowing them to retain the rights to the X-Men. Until you stop buying into this bullshit and just settling we will never get the rights back to Marvel where they belong and see a true adaption put to screen. Plus there is nothing to spoil this movie was already rotten when Fox green lit this crap.

@ Rormachine all I heard was BAAAAAAAA... BAAAAAA...

@xXkryptoniteXx What? Please point out to me where I said anything about it be kid friendly? I said it should be with Marvel Studios where they obviously and sucessfully have adapted Comic Book Movies. Oh and being they created the X-Men im sure out of all studios they would know how to do it best.

A live action movie doesn't have to be grounded in reality. Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Pirates. These are all fantasy layered films. People buy into that. No matter how you slice it X-men isn't real. Neither is Batman for that matter. As much as I really enjoy the Nolan Bat films, and I am looking forward to TDKR. People now assume that everything Comic book related has to be "Nolanized." It's almost as if the life as been sucked out of peoples imaginations and wonder. Truth be told I'm not apposed to a realistic take on a comic book movie if it's done with respect (Batman Begins, TDK), but the idea that everything now has to follow suit is plain ridiculous.

I'm more of a DC fan so I'm torn between going to see it because it looks quite good and not going to see it because I disagree with the way they've treated Marvel fans.

LOL, I am sooo laughing at how he's dissing the other movies... like what? Jealous? Dude, rather petty for a guy that's supposed to endorse his movie in the light of the negativity by some die-hards that have been disappointed by Singer and his entourage. Childish really.

Not his job to market the film??? He DIRECTED it for crying out loud, he's SUPPOSED to market the damn thing by word of mouth in all of his interviews regarding it by discussing how he worked on it and extolling the highlights of the project. If that was his answer; then it looks like he didn't have confidence in his OWN damn work. He (and Singer and Co.) had to have seen those posters BEFORE they were released - Vaughn could have just said that the end-decision wasn't his call on but Singer/Fox.

Yeah I enjoy the realistic approach but I wanna see a REAL X-men movie, NOT some more of Singer's BS.I wanna see Magneto with magnetic wave effects picking up a frickin' sub and rip it apart without looking like he's conducting a symphony. And please get rid of that stupid purple helmet...the one in Fist Ass looks more like the comic version.Get some better costumes and lose Halle Berry and everybody else.In other words...REBOOT.

x-men first class isn't even worthy to be mentioned in the same sentence as thor & green lantern.

x-men first class is 10 Ilb of shit in a 5 Ilb bag.

"It's uncompromising stuff, augmented with brilliant effects and is even slightly disturbing."

I'm kind of sick of film makers thinking that setting a film or a part of their film in the context of the holocaust translates to serious, profound stuff. It has become cliche and tired to use concentration camp imagery as a means to make your film profound or meaningful: just take a look at the disaster that was "Shutter Island." Is this "serious" or "realistic"? Or is it just a cheap means of adding a sense of gravitas to your film by appealing to earlier cinematic treatments of the holocaust that actually WERE important and profound?

I know that the character of Magneto was put into a concentration camp as a child, and the Singer sequence in X1 powerfully captured that story. Rather than expand on this, however, I'd like a movie about the actual X-Men, set in the present, that contributes something substantive to the cinematic Marvel Universe. You're going to have do better than "hey, it starts with creepy Bacon in Auschwitz" for me to take your film seriously, whatever the genre.

Sorry dude. Give me another reason to see your movie.

He's NOT saying his opening is better than Thor or GL, he's saying he doubts that either of those could open in such a dark way.
BigK1337
BigK1337 - 3/30/2011, 7:29 PM
. . . Wow, really? Just because an opening is dark and gritty doesn't make it perfect.

I mean, come on, using the Holocaust opening again? I think people will more likely say "again" instead of "What the [frick]"; if those audience saw the first movie.

"I can't imagine Thor or Green Lanter starting like that."
Thats cause those movies aren't trying to be dark. Strange, he didn't mention Captain America; guess while he is impling that his movie will be more original in that interview, he is still thinking that Captain America might be the better of the comic book films.
Pompous, cowardly prick.
BigK1337
BigK1337 - 3/30/2011, 7:35 PM
@CaptainAmerica I think the reason for all the [female dog]ing is due to him impling (yeah I think I can't type the word right) that his film will appear more original than the other films.

Ironic concidering the fact that the other movies seems alot less grounded to reality and is willing to break the barriers of a typical super hero film (Thor with all the mentions of Gods and Magic, Green Lantern with all the sci-fi and space odyssey situations, and Captain America for being a super hero Indiana Jones, World War 2 type film).
BigK1337
BigK1337 - 3/30/2011, 7:40 PM
@TheTalent I salute your answer.
Like many other fanboys of X-Men, we all couldn't decide whether to see it or not watch it all, based on those very reasons you put out.

Though honestly, I feel its more reasonable to just watch the Green Lantern film first than wait to see how First Class turns out. Chances are, it pretty much might end up like Wolverine; not good, yet end up with alot of undeserved money.
