Rebecca Romijn debuted as Mystique in 20th Century Fox's first X-Men movie, before going on to reprise the role for X2 and The Last Stand (she also made a brief cameo in First Class). Though her dialogue was sparse throughout, the actress made a lasting impression as the shape-shifting mutant, and many fans still prefer her interpretation of the character to Jennifer Lawrence's.
Romijn has expressed interest in returning as Mystique in the past, and has now reiterated her desire to "blue-up" again during an interview with ComicBook.com - although she doubts the opportunity will arise.
“I don’t know if they would ever want me back. I mean, that was quite a few years back when I played that character, but I would love to, yeah, absolutely. It was a fantastic franchise to be a part of. I’ll love that cast until the day I die. We had a great time together. And yeah, I would absolutely be open to that.”
While it's true that Marvel Studios would most likely recast this role (if they even utilize the character) for the planned X-Men reboot, the introduction of The Multiverse makes pretty much anything possible. Romijn's original X-Men castmate Patrick Stewart will appear as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, after all, so a Mystique cameo down the line is hardly off the table.
