According to an exclusive report over at Entertainment Weekly, the director of Layer Cake, Stardust and the recent comic book adaptation, Kick-Ass has apparently been offered the chance to direct the movie that will focus on the early years of the X-Men. Of course, many of you will already know that Vaughn turned down directing X-Men: The Last Stand back in 2005 after he had already negotiated his deal with the studio. Here is an excerpt from the site's report:

"In a move that may tilt the axis of fanboys worldwide, Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn is in talks to direct X-Men: First Class for Twentieth Century Fox.

Of course, considering Vaughn’s history with the X-Men franchise, he could very well turn down the First Class offer, as well (sources say the studio is also speaking with other possible directors).

Should a deal come together, however, Vaughn would be helming an origin story of the X-Men crew, one that tells the story of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and the other X-Men in their younger years, played by younger actors."

So, what do you guys think about this? Is Vaughn the right guy for the job or does the fact that this is being made by Fox doom it regardless of who'll be directing? Have your say below!

Cool.

And cue the "He'd at least be better than Singer!" comments.

I hope it works as a sort of reboot, bringing back Iceman and Angel to the original team and sticking closer to the comics, doubt it. If not who do you guys think will be in the line-up outside the obvious? Judging from the X-movies it'd probably be something like Cyclops, Jean, Storm, Beast, with some other dude.

Will Fox let him actually direct and lead or just do what we say...

Does anyone know if there is a time limit to when the rights go back to Marvel/Disney?

This is great news but even with the involvement of a great director like Vaughn, I still worry about this movie. Plus, they may have offered this to him but I'd be shocked if he actually said yes especially after all his recent comments about the benefits of working more independently as he did with Kick-Ass..!

Regardless, he'd be 1000x better than Bryan Singer! (but then again, who wouldnt be?) :P

@BACKDOORCHIJAD
As long as Fox or whoever has a film in production featuring the X-Men/GhostRider/etc. then they keep the rights.

Anyway if this is still in the same continuity as the other X-films then Emma Frost (from X-Men Origins: Wolverine) will probably be in it.

I think Vaughn would be brilliant, but I hope he turns it down, and I wish Alan Moore type curses upon any and all their Marvel productions in the hope that Marvel get the rights back.

If Fox do make it though, I'm still going to find it difficult to accept a different "original" X-Men, even if they don't [frick] with the production like they always do.

They need to make it by a deadline, so as director upon director turns it down, they'll get increasingly desperate and will rush to get a work-for-hire director, a cobbled together committee-written script and will churn out yet another piece of shit, just to ensure they keep the license.

Or am I just being pessimistic? :)

blargh. he would probably make it 100 times better. but i don't know. after the 3rd movie, this series is dead to me, lol. unless they fixed X-3...which they COULD do, but won't.

i don't know, maybe this'll be better.

Cyclops, Beast, Storm, Jean Grey, and the red-shirt, "ensign" mutant that u just know will get killed off??

first class is "really" off the comics if they follow the x-men movies.. dang! i'm really tired of hollywood super changing the stories.. i mean i understand they have to make changes...but at least 85% close to the comic stories would be great... and the colorful costumes they have? that's what also makes them look so great! mostly all super heroes need color in there costumes. that's what first attracted me when i saw and bought my first spider-man comic.

This is awesome news, he did an awesome job with Kick-Ass, he will rock at X-Men.

Having this first class is a great idea. Its most of the original X-Men and Storm and Emma Frost could be good replacements for Angel and Iceman. But I really do think the original Brotherhood from the comics should be featured. Sabretooth and Mystique got their time to shine already, bring in Mastermind, Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver along with Toad and maybe include Unus the Untouchable.

And I think it would be cool to have a First Class trilogy. In the first movie, show how the original team came together (Cyclops and Emma rescued from Weapon X, Jean was shown to be recruited to the school in the X3 flashback so she would already be at the school, Beast could be introduced at the start of the movie) and have them begin training as the X-Men and they have to fight the Shadow King in Africa, and in the process they meet Storm. The sequel could have them as the proper X-Men and then have them fight the Brotherhood for only one movie as they were overexposed in the previous trilogy. The movie ends with Magneto fleeing with Toad and from there he would recruit Mystique and Sabretooth off-screen matching it up with X1. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver could reject Magneto and Mastermind could disappear until the third movie where he would be trying to join the Hellfire Club who are trying to manipulate Jean. The third movie could have a proper Phoenix storyline where the X-Men fight the Hellfire Club who unleash the Dark Phoenix and Xavier puts the psychic blocks on her mind before she gets too powerful and this also wipes her memory of the incident. The Phoenix is contained until of course X3. The third movie in the First Class trilogy should also have Emma Frost joining the Hellfire Club and Polaris, Havok and Thunderbird should be also introduced in this trilogy and then have Thunderbird die and Polaris and Havok leave with Emma to set up a new school to be financed by the Hellfire Club controlled by Emma

Then bring back Bryan Singer for X4 & X5 set after X3, with Sinister and Apocalypse as villains

I would much rather Marvel yank the rights from Fox somehow and film an X-Men movie in the current Marvel movie continuity. C'mon Fox. Do it. Its for the greater good.

@P89210: You mean Daniel Espinosa, the Swedish director with only 4 low budget, not very well received, Swedish/Danish films under his belt and with no English language, bid budget or American work to his name? That Daniel Espinosa?

Fox continues its search, talking to a strong list of directors that includes Timur Bekmambetov, Louis Leterrier, David Slade, Daniel Espinoza and Carl Erick Rinsch. A decision will be made next week on the director with an eye toward a late summer or early fall start.

Carl Erick Rinsch is my choice now if you have seen his short film Gift you will too
