POWERPUFF: The Powerpuff Girls' Creator Reveals Warning He Gave The CW About Failed Live-Action Series

The CW had big hopes for Powerpuff a few years ago, but The Powerpuff Girls' creator Craig McCracken has now revealed that he warned the network they were taking this iconic trio in the wrong direction...

When The CW revealed plans for Powerpuff, a live-action adaptation of Cartoon Network's The Powerpuff Girls, fans of the hit series were equal parts excited and trepidatious.

The network's approach to the material raised eyebrows from the start, largely because each member of the iconic trio was set to be portrayed by, and as, adults. Diablo Cody and Heather Regnie's role in developing the project felt like a step in the right direction, though, as did the fact Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. alum Chloe Bennet was tapped to play Blossom. Dove Cameron was chosen as Bubbles, with Yana Perrault picked to bring Buttercup to life on screen.

Talking to The Los Angeles Times (via Toonado.com), The Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken says he warned The CW that they were taking his beloved characters in the wrong direction.

"I had one meeting with them and I told them, 'When you turn them into adults, they’re no longer the Powerpuff Girls because if they’re adults, that’s just three super girls who don’t have to deal with being kids,'" he recalls. "That’s a completely different show."

The CW, the network responsible for the likes of Arrow and The Flash, clearly wanted just another superhero show and that no doubt goes some way in explaining why it didn't pan out.

"The Powerpuff Girls used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes, now they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting," read the synopsis for the now-scrapped series, confirming it was to be a far cry from the animated series fans know and love. "Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?"

After being shot, the pilot was later revealed to have fallen flat, with The CW's former Chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz admitting the whole thing was a "miss." The idea had been to go back to the drawing board and reshoot the episode, but the whole thing fell apart and the series was ultimately scrapped.

In the same interview, McCracken revealed why he's unable to pick a favourite from the beloved trio. "The girls represent body, mind and spirit. Together they make a whole person," he says. "They always play off each other. If you remove one the balance is off."

"When writing them, I’m thinking about what Blossom would say and I immediately go, ‘Bubbles would react this way and Buttercup would do this.’ They function as a single character to me."

While that live-action project is no more, McCracken is developing a new Powerpuff Girls project with Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, so it shouldn't be too much longer before we see them in action again. As adorable kids, of course, not miserable twentysomethings figuring out their place in the world.

This such shows just how desperate and moronic the CW has always been. Just from this here,

"...now they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting,"

you can smell the CW. Now with the end of S&L, they can finally be what they always wanted to be. The next Lifetime.

@DocSpock - Yeah, I try to be a more optimistic, “don’t cancel it until you’ve checked it out” kind of person, but I watched a good amount of “PPG” with my oldest daughter when she was little and got a pretty good feel for what the show was about, and what was being proposed for this new show was just not it. In fact it sounded like 9 miles of “not it”.

On the plus side it would have featured Chloe bringing all of her notable… assets to the screen. So there would have been that to look forward to.

@DocSpock - Yeah, or a least it could have been a good couple of points cosplaying as a PPG (amIright?), but sadly it seems that train has sailed.

This show was never a good idea. it was a corruption of the IP that, thankfully, got canceled.

@BobGarlen - Almost like that time we dodged another bullet with that Munsters reboot that got announced some years ago.

PP Girls was fun as a kid. It had a similar tone to Teen Titans Go. Didn’t take itself seriously, but it had interesting and creative characters.

I agree this show would be 100% different if they went through with it, and it would have bombed super hard.

Man, I used to love the hell out of this show in college. It was so superior for its time and kept a full audience invested with its humor (for kids) and its sophisticated jokes for 'older folk.'

Nothing had me cracking up more than the girls taking on the giant robot who produced like 50 missiles (which took a good 2 min.s to show hilariously!) and then set them off destroying the whole city except the girls :D

I miss this show

I still want them to release this pilot as a web-series.
Don't care how bad it is, matter of fact: the worse, the better!

Chloe Bennet's prime seems like it's wasting away. Have to wonder if she has a bad rep, a terrible agent or just flat out sucks in auditions.

@PartyKiller - I feel she just makes poor decisions.

Case in point, Logan Paul.

@PartyKiller - TBF she was still in AoS right up until COVID started shutting everything down.

I dunno what if anything she may have been lined up for that got dropped during lockdowns beyond this but she has had four projects released this year so deffo more maybe about what she has chosen to do than anything else although we don't know how much she has been offered/auditioned for either.

@Apophis71 - It probably did damage her some.

There were a few performers on the rise in 2019-2020 who then lost momentum with shutdowns. And performers like Bennett, needed to score new roles fast after going off the screens when a series ended.

Tom Welling took a year off after Smallville and that was a very big mistake that may have done great damage to his career. He needed to be doing more projects than Smallville in it's last two years and year after. He should have been doing other stuff especially in Smallville's early years when girls were so crazy for him. But he just did a Fog remake and a steve Martin movie. Welling seems to not have been able to become a part of the Hollywood machine. Bennett seems to be like Welling in that regard.

Hope she is able to get some career momentum or she's going to be doing 'Kevin Sorbo's Character Finds Jesus' movies.
