Spike Lee In Talks To Helm Oldboy Remake

Spike Lee In Talks To Helm Oldboy Remake

This could be the closest this excellent director could get to a CBM as word is Lee is in talks to direct the Hollywood version of the original Manga/Dark Horse comic book..

If you have seen Park Chan Wook's original Oldboy then you know that it wouldn't exactly seem like a natural fit for Steven Spielberg and Will Smith. But they are the heavy hitters originally in line to bring an American remake(although their version was said to be a more direct adaptation of the original Manga) to the screen. Well, Spielberg is out but Twitchfilm reports that another high profile director may take his place..

Twitch has learned that Spike Lee is currently in talks to direct the long-rumored Hollywood remake of Park Chan-Wook´s Oldboy.

Word of a US remake of the Park Chan-Wook revenge classic first surfaced in 2008 with word that both Steven Spielberg (in some capacity) and Will Smith were eyeing the project and now it appears to finally be moving ahead.

Smith was in line to play lead character Oh De Su(Shinichi Gotō in the comic) and may still be interested, as he did recently pass on Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. If you haven't seen the original or are unfamiliar with the story here is a rundown..

Old Boy (オールド・ボーイ Ōrudo Bōi?) is a manga series written by Garon Tsuchiya and illustrated by Nobuaki Minegishi. The narrative follows the protagonist Shinichi Gotō, a man who, after a decade of incarceration in a private prison, is suddenly freed. After his release, Gotō must find his captors and discover the reason for his confinement. Old Boy was serialized in the Futabasha magazine Weekly Manga Action from 1996 to 1998 with a total of 79 chapters among eight collected volumes released during that time. The series was picked up for North American localization by Dark Horse Comics and released between 2006 and 2007. The manga was also adapted into an award-winning South Korean film in 2003.

The Korean original is up there among my favorite movies and Spike Lee among my favorite directors, so needless to say I really hope this happens. What do you guys think?

If it ain't broken don't try and fix it. Hollywood has a history of destroying good foreign movies. "Abre los ojos" turned into the turd known as "Vanilla Sky", "Let the right one in" into the okayish but inferior "Let me in"... "La femme Nikita" remake "Nikita" was crap... Now Oldboy? Is nothing sacred? One of the best movies ever. Don't touch it.

I rather see direct japanese version of the manga thou.

Gunslinger, sure they mess a lot of em up but there are good ones too. You mention Let Me In which was more than "okayish", in fact it was actually more true to the original novel than the Swedish flick. Then there is The Departed, maybe not quite as good as Infernal Affairs but not far off. And David Fincher's Girl With The Dragon Tattoo LOOKS great at least. I'll give this a chance anyway.

@teabag Spike Lee never did White Chicks or Dance Flick. Anyway this sounds like a winner. SPike Lees has always been in my top 10 directors of all time.

American remakes of most asian films turns out bad with the exception of the Departed. but thats because the original (Infernal Affairs) was awesomee! Oldboy was really good and messed up lol i think theyre gonna soften up the plot =/

@ Ror - the Departed was very good. I actually like it better than "Infernal Affairs". Thing with Oldboy is... It's twisted. Brilliant, with great photography, a class cast and an amazing story, but twisted. Don't wanna spoil things for those who haven't seen it yet, but that big revelation and even some of the violence, would have to be toned down to appeal to the masses. It's not a feel good movie, and certainly not a family movie. I could be wrong though (hope I am). Time will tell.

Please no. Why the [frick] do we have to remake foreign films? Its like they're not good enough for us Americans if its not in English, and sometimes we remake great films that ARE in English (Death at a Funeral). Its just bull shit. I love Oldboy but there is no way its going to be as good. Choi Min-sik is outstanding in this and I really cant see a remake having the same impact on me. If anybody wants to see another great performance by Choi Min-sik check out I Saw the Devil, a very creepy movie.

Nice I [frick]in love the movie and Spike Lee seems to be an inspired choice. Jackie Earle Haley for the role Oh Dae Su!
@Shaman- that movie is [frick]in awesome! You should also check out "I Saw The Devil", one intense film.

Wow, this is kinda out of left field.
Spike is a great director, dont know if we necessarily NEED an Oldboy remake, but it was bound to happen I guess.

At least someone with talent is helming the project, or could be.

Whoa123 i was reading these comments and was thinking to myself "meh Spike's great I think he MAY be able to pull this off, but Will Smith? He's legendary almost with Denzel, but meh." Then you suggested JEH and I am officially 100% down with that idea. JEH seems like the PERFECT choice to use when adapting this for American audiences. The Oh Dae Su in the film wasn't muscular or anything like Will is, but he is almost thin like JEH...Awesome suggestion!!!!

Why, god, answer me: WHY??? The film is a f.ucking classic, it's simply perfect and... it's FRESH, new and modern... Why should have a remake? Pointless...

Just like those crap as "Quarantine", "Let the right one in"... just because ISN'T spoken in ENGLISH language... yankees can't read subtitles! F.uck it!

I really don't know how they are gonna do justice to the Korean film. that movie was just about perfect for its story.
OnLeatherWings

that movie is seriously twisted!!!!!! still good though. its gona get all Fd up with the american version and not be nearly as good. its gona end up being censored way too much cuz they are gona try to appeal to the masses so the story will change :(
AlexDeLarge87
AlexDeLarge87 - 7/6/2011, 9:13 AM
Jackie Earle Haley would definitely be cool in the lead role but i think Smith can pull it off too. He just has to make himself look like a common man not like a muscled action star.
But cause i rather see the original japanese version i would cast Tadanobu Asano to the lead role.

@RorMachine right on..Spike is an amazing director..and you can't forget Crooklyn, that movie was great, and i really dug his recent flicks,25th hour, the inside man, & miracle at st anna
I feel people's problem about remaking a good movie, but as long as the right people are behind it i'm not worried..look at the Departed (aka infernal affairs in korea)
