Los Angeles, CA – July 21, 2011 – The Indomina Group announced today they are teaming with Samuel L. Jackson and Gonzo Studios to make the live-action Afro Samurai adaptation:

It was announced today that The Indomina Group, the fast-growing U.S. and Dominican Republic based producer and distributor of film, TV and trans-media content, is teaming with Samuel L. Jackson and Gonzo studios to produce a new live action film based on the popular “Afro Samurai” animated series that has spawned an impressive franchise and a global following. The announcement was made by Indomina Group Vice Chairman and CEO Jasbinder Singh Mann who will serve as producer with Samuel L. Jackson and Gonzo Studios’ Shin Ishikawa. Eli Selden of Anonymous Content is executive producing.

Academy Award® nominee Samuel L. Jackson has been close to the franchise for a number of years having voiced Afro Samurai for the 2007 anime TV mini-series “Afro Samurai” and again for the 2009 Emmy® winning animated TV movie “Afro Samurai: Resurrection.”

Said Jackson, “This has been one of my very favorite properties ever since our amazing debut at Comic Con with the original series pilot out of Japan. I can't wait to produce the epic feature film version with our new partners at The Indomina Group."

“When Indomina was launched, ‘Afro Samurai’ was quickly identified as the perfect property for us to option and exploit through our vertical channels targeted to a fanboy audience,” said Singh Mann. We never took our eyes off the property and are very pleased to not only have the opportunity now to make an extraordinary film, but to do it with Samuel L. Jackson, who is just as passionate about ‘Afro Samurai’ as we are. This is a perfect collaboration in the eyes of Indomina. We look forward to going to work with Sam and Gonzo on this and making something discernibly unique.”

Producers plan to attach a writer and director this summer and complete casting by the end of the year. The film will be shot at Pinewood Indomina Studios in the Dominican Republic in 2012.

Indomina optioned the rights to “Afro Samurai” from Japanese rights holder Gonzo and will make “Afro Samurai” the first feature film production from The Indomina Group, which over the last six months has debuted its North American distribution arm (Indomina Releasing), international sales division (Indomina International) and Studio operations and facilities (Pinewood Indomina Studios).

Stacey Smart Stanley is overseeing the project’s development for Indomina while Chris Carlisle will oversee for Gonzo Studios.

Afro Samurai (アフロサムライ,) is a Japanese seinen dōjinshi manga series written and illustrated by manga artist Takashi Okazaki. It was originally serialized irregularly in the avant-garde dōjinshi manga magazine Nou Nou Hau from September 1999 to May 2000. Inspired by Takashi Okazaki's love of soul and hip hop music and American media, Afro Samurai follows the life of Afro Samurai who witnessed his father (owner of the No. 1 headband) being killed by the hands of a gunslinger named Justice (owner of the No. 2 headband) while he was a child. As an adult, Afro sets off to avenge his father's death and kill Justice.

The Afro Samurai dōjinshi was adapted into a 5-episode anime TV series by Studio Gonzo in 2007. The same studio also went on to produce a made-for-TV movie sequel entitled Afro Samurai: Resurrection in 2009, which gained two Emmy nominations, for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, which it won, and Outstanding Animated Program. After the release of the anime series, Takashi Okazaki remade the original Afro Samurai dōjinshi into a two-volume manga.

In addition to the success of the anime series, Afro Samurai has also been adapted into a video game. For the TV series and the film, two soundtracks by the RZA of Wu-Tang Clan have been released as well as a profile book in Japan.

AWESOME! Afro rules!

Sam probably plays just Afro´s father in the film.
Andre Benjamin would make a bad ass Afro.

Oh and btw, this is an official announcement, so "Reportedly" in the headline isn't necessary.

Own both the series. and have been waiting to hear about a live action film. I wonder if Sam will still play Afro? I think if he does this should be an original sotry that takes place later with an older Afro. I don't see him playing the 20+ version. But if he does whatever I'm in!!! AFROOOOOO!!!!!

@AlexDeLarge,

I agree, Andre Benjamin would make a bad ass Afro...but I've always pictured Mos Def as the perfect choice since I first saw the movie. Afro looks just like him in the anime and Mos Def is an excellent actor and great opportunity to transition to action hero!...

MOS DEF FOR AFRO SAMURAI!!!...

They should just make a feature length animated film for theaters. When was the last time we had an adult animated movie?

@Alex YOU ARE CORRECT, SIR.

3000 is just about the only person I can think of who could pull off the look and brooding mood of Afro.

As for the rest of the cast;
Sam Jackson as Afro's dad, Rokutaro and/or Ninja Ninja, of course. Willem Defoe for Justice. Donnie Yen for Kuma. Devon Aoki for Okiku

Perfect Casting. You're welcome.

Sam says on the audio commentary, that his favorite character to play was Ninja Ninja (the old Afro doppleganger that follows him around), I think that would be a perfect roll for Sam. That way he controls the narration, because afro is an almost silent character.
StrangerX

Sam should play afro's father

AEStark - 7/21/2011, 9:49 AM
I'm liking mos def for Afro. They have to get Jackson to be ninja ninja, even if they have to use some kind of cgi. Amarilloblacks cast is awesome, just wishing Ron pearlman could get thin enough to play justice. The voices are such a huge part of the franchise, and Ron pearlman as justice was fantastic.

Oh, the big Russian from transporter 3 should be #6.

And the rza should do the soundtrack, and if they could throw in "guillotine swordz", that would be sweet.
CROVL

@AmarilloBlack,

Love Andre 3000, but always thought he would be perfect as "Fo-Sho-Nuff, the Shogun of Harlem" in a sequel to The Last Dragon, as the son of Sho-Nuff, the original Shogun of Harlem...

My cast for Afro Samurai:

Afro......Mos Def
Rokutaro....Michael Jai White or Wesley Snipes
Justice....Timothy Olyphant or Bradley Cooper
Ninja-Ninja...Samuel L. Jackson
Okiku.....Kelly Hu

btw, must concede that Willem Dafoe as Justice would be totally gangsta son! He would rock it!...

You guys might want to suggest a few actors that can actually fight & pull off the martial arts action, if the fights look bad then the movie will suck!

@AESTARK&ALEX THANKS!

@CROVL...yeah, ur cast is sh*tting all over mine lol MJW 4 the WIN! Olyphant would own as a demon cowboy, too.

@WENEED...
My fro blows in the wind. Bizzy Bone's can too, just depends on the level of blowout they're willing to undertake. And you are correct, no one but Zack Snyder (or Robert Rodriguez) should try this on for movie size.
TheAmarilloBlack
TheAmarilloBlack - 7/21/2011, 1:55 PM
@ eDubya72 my thoughts precisely

OH, and I don't know who will actually direct this movie, but whomever does (hopefully Robert Rodriguez), Afro has GOT to be smoking a FAT ass doob whenever he's not either sleeping, slaying, or sipping (lemonade). Carry on...

@MarvelWeiner
Excuse me, I don't usually address trollishness, but how can a movie based on a manga and anime inspired by Takashi Okazaki's love of soul and hip hop music and American media be anything like a movie spoof inspired by Michael jai White's love of Blaxploitation and Chinese Kung Fu cinema be anything alike? Other than the fact a badass black man with an afro will be kicking major amounts of ass using martial-arts?
TheAmarilloBlack
TheAmarilloBlack - 7/21/2011, 2:53 PM
Or do u just mean it's going to be just as awesome? Because if that's the case, we have an accord, sir.

Natetrix79 - 7/21/2011, 5:24 PM
I think Mickey Rourke would be cool as The Demon Cowboy, he's got the build & the voice, a little make-up & boom cool ass villain! And the sword play should be like it was in Ninja Assassin.
