Joe Cornish Offers Vague ANT-MAN Update

Ultimately confirming the film still in the drafting stage, make the jump and check out a quick word from the co-writer of Marvel & Edgar Wright's Ant-Man movie, Joe Cornish.

Marvel Studios is undoubtedly moving forward with new Iron Man and Thor installments for their first slate of films post-The Avengers. While they're much-anticipated, I for one was hoping they'd be introducing new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe; particularly the long-productive Ant-Man movie.

While "drafting" seems to be all director Edgar Wright and co-writer Joe Cornish have to reveal lately, Cornish's recent chat with I Am Rogue isn't too surprising. Check out what was said below.

“Yeah, Ant-Man is still going,” confirmed Cornish. “Edgar and I were writing on it only the day before yesterday,” he admitted. I followed up by asking if they were doing a lot of rewriting on the script. “Yeah, we’re just drafting and drafting,” he said. Finally, I wanted to find out if Cornish thought that Edgar would still end up directing the movie. “Yes,” Cornish answered. “I’m just a humble writer on that one,” he said in closing.

Other than Edgar Wright revealing last year that it's essentially a high-tech spy heist film with somebody with a very particular power, there isn't much known regarding the cinematic adaptation for the Astonishing Avenger, Ant-Man. And while Marvel Studios' president once stated they could be releasing at most 3 films a year, post-The Avengers, I wouldn't rule out Ant-Man for 2013 just yet.

However, since the film has been in development for about four or five years now, I won't get my hopes up for a 2013 release if they're still drafting at this point. So, if CBMs haven't died down by then, 2014 is likely. What do you think?

I dunno how I would feel about this... at least have it tie in with the current MCU... also not super cheesy as it could be *cough Green Lantern cough*

Ant-Man DOES NOT need his own movie. Give someone in the Marvel Universe thats worthy of the Hollywood treatment.

Sounds amazing, Edgar Wright can do no wrong IMO. Aaron Eckhart for Hank, Shannyn Sossamon for Janet..

C'mon guys, save Ant man for Avengers 2. I dig Ant man though, would look great on screen. Maybe he should be in a short

Um, I like him if featured in AVENGERS, but a solo movie...not really!

@Intruder: Ant-Man just doesnt have that IT factor thats needed to make his own CBM people will be drawn to IMO. Pym and Janet are better off in an Avenger sequel. If anything, Hank's Giant-Man persona should be the one thats incorporated into the MCU.

We don't need an Ant Man movie. Put him in The Avengers and their sequels, but Ant Man would be a dumb move for Marvel Studios.

LOL at these people who don't think Ant-Man can be done well. Where's your imagination?! Thor was hard to translate on screen and oh look, it was successful. This isn't Warner Bros/DC. This is freaking Edgar Wright and Marvel Studios!

Ant-man is going to be a tough cookie to sell. But out of respect of the original Avenger team, Antman and Wasp should definetly be in it. I would love to see a Black Panther film more than anything. By far my favorite Marvel character.

Thats like making a Vision movie, or a Quicksilver flick. Cool characters but they'd be better off in an Avengers movie. Even as cool a character as Hawkeye is, he just doesnt have the right-enough tools to get an effective solo flick.

@Intruder I thought GL would be successful too with Martin Campbell at the helm, but I guess we all make mistakes. :)

Edgar Wright though, is a whole different story. He translated Scott Pilgrim very well on the big screen. Why not Ant-Man?

@Intruder:The thing about Blade is that he had his own set of villains and didn't originate out of shadows from a team.

Im not saying that you have to be a major well known character to have your own successful CBM, but you have to atleast have enough of your own solo power to carry it well on the big screen.

Actually, I can see an Ant-Man movie working, but just barely.

Ditch the tights. Hell, don't even worry about his ability to communicate with/control ants. It'll just come off as a Batman rip-off.

In his first appearance, Hank tries to "sell" his research to the government, with the shrinking application intended to make storage a whole lot more effective.
IE: Shrink 300-fold what would go into a cargo plane.

Now if you brink this into movie-form, you can easily mirror how much this kind of shrinking application is NEEDED in this economy. How much gas would this save, etc.

That's how Doctor Pym becomes an icon. He's made up as a brilliant scientist who seems to have the answer to our economical woes. He could be up for the Nobel Prize. Time Magazine's "Man of the Year."

Suppose now that this background could go any which way. Pym is unstable. He suffers from a personality disorder, and just may feel as though his work isn't perfected enough. Feelings of inferiority, not even brought on or amplified yet by the Avengers. So at this point, Hank constructs an assistant. Meet Ultron. Ultron is going to be his test dummy. A drone who is programmed to be a bit TOO gifted, considering Pym being a perfectionist.

Long story short, Ultron gains sentience while being experimented on repeatedly. Like Skynet, it assumes that humans are not only hostile, but a pestilence. After all, he was created to guarantee Pym's solution to the economic crisis; to save resources - to save humans from themselves.

So Ultron sabotages Hank's "Pym Particles" only just before they are deployed, making everything that is shrunk down destabilize. Hank's reputation is ruined and he is arrested on a whole bunch of trumped up charges....

it seems like a lot of people are doubting this movie but it could turn out good.

think about it. Ant Man is a good enough character. have wasp in the film and even better. throw in a little bit of ultron references in there and even better. ( maybe a black panther reference?! hey they need to do it sometime)

the only thing the would be difficult would be a villian
Jolt17
Jolt17 - 7/10/2011, 12:16 AM
@Tainted Thanks a lot, you've just convinced me that the movie can work!

Well I'm not into ANT-MAN, saw him only in AVENGERS and old FF issues, and hence I don't know if he has that enough villain!

But ULTRON should be very nice, smart move, and his psychological pressure (the only thing I have imagined for the movie) is nice as well!

; )

I always dug antman :) I can probably picture it, on the other hand I'm not really bothered by corny things as others might be.

The most interesting thing to me is the dynamic of a crime fighting couple. Yes, it does sound corny if you put it like that but it just hasnt been done right yet. The potential of two heroes who put their lives on the line, yet they also care for each other's safety as well. There can also be some fun banter when Hank and Janet are fighting - which will mesh well with marvels humor in their movies.

Other things include that they can enhance their powers. I want to see wasp in mini- size flying into the gut of a villain and sending him away with her concentrated strength. It'll be fun Hank going mini and reappearing as if he's teleporting to confuse baddies.

I want this simple with just one antman. Scott Lang can be in it without the powers. Again simple where he's pretty much antman the entire film but fails at one point because he is small. Then we all get surprised at the end when he can grow and destroy the bad guy. Imagine giantman falling on a building O_O. Yeah I'm on board where I want this to happen.

Making this movie would be a huge mistake (no pun intended) Ant/Giant man and the Wasp don't need their own movie, just graft thew into the Avenger flick as S.H.I.E.L.D scientists.

Does the very concept of Ant-man and The Wasp automatically give the thought of a movie a high potential of being a commercial fail? Yes.

Does it have very high potential of being corny and campy? Yes

But if this movie turns out to not only be a critical but a commercial success, will it be a game changer? Most definitely.

I say go for it. Marvel has made a household name out of two unknown heroes and in two weeks, Captain America will be more popular than ever. I have faith they can achieve the same with the Pyms... that's IF the movie is done right.

Just because the idea of this hero is far fetched doesn't mean this movie can't work.
Every super hero movie doesn't have to take itself seriously, Like The Dark Knight or Spider-Man 2 to be good.
That's why I think Edgar Wright is perfect for this, he an expert at serious satire.
Remember Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz are both making fun of their respective genre, but are also damn good additions to that genre.Other examples of this besides Edgar Wrights movies would be like Galaxy Quest or the Evil Dead Trilogy. He will explore the more comical side of a guy that shrinks, while simultaneously making a damn good story out of it.

Yo @TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY, DC shouldn't make any CBM movies other than Batman and Superman. DC shouldn't follow Marvel stunt okay? Give most of the CBM slots - harmony achieved.

DC should only do what they do best: cartoons.

Is it so hard to finish that script??????

Its starting to get ridiculous.

Its logical to developt a script during a year, doing your research, read the comics and all...

but 4 years???? come on!

you wont write the masterpiece of the movie history....

so why to wait much more time?

I think this movie would only work in my mind to have Ultron as a villain if it lead straight into the Avengers 2; I couldn't see it working any other way.

I like wright. I like ant man/giant man and wasp in earths mightiest, I just don't know about a solo flick. Just his ant man persona? They could easily be explained in five min in avengers.

I like fillion, and he does have a whedon connection, but curious why he seems to be the fav? Are we just throwing male sy-fy leads out there? Macgyver, Flanigan, hewlitt, browder??? Lol
