Peter Jackson is still regarded as one of the most respected filmmakers of the 21st century. With the whole
Lord of the Rings trilogy under his belt, the creator has become less active following the release of
The Hobbit trilogy. With no narrative directorial efforts on his schedule since 2014, it leaves fans wondering why he did not take up
Aquaman, an opportunity he was offered twice.
In an interview with Empire, Jackson revealed his situation with Warner Bros. regarding the (at the time) development of
Aquaman.
[Warner Bros. CEO Tsujihara] said, ‘Are you a fan of Aquaman?’ I said, ‘No,’” Jackson said. “Six months later: ‘Peter, are you a fan of ‘Aquaman’?’ I said, ’No, Kevin, I already told you this.’ I’m not a superhero guy. I read Tintin…Look, films are hard. I only want to make something that I have a deep passion for. I don’t really anticipate making another theatrical film for a year or two.
Thankfully, James Wan's ultimate direction seemed to satisfy a multitude of fans, doing fantastic holds throughout the first quarter of 2019. It is hard to imagine anyone putting as much effort as Wan into the material.
Considering the lack of passion and rushed nature of his recent blockbuster outputs, it is no suprise that Jackson is taking a more apprehensive approach in options. But no matter what, his next narrative directorial effort will be a welcome one.
