May 2012 is going to bring us a movie that I think we've all been waiting for. A live action Avengers film directed and written by Joss Whedon. An iconic team that is FINALLY making it to the big screen. I want to share my thoughts and opinions about The Avengers and the movies that have led up to it. As of now the hero line-up for The Avengers looks like this:

From left to right: Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Clark Gregg Agent Phil Coulsen), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans(Captain America), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner), Joss Whedon (Writer, Director).

I don't know about you but I'm only about half satisfied with this casting. My main grievance with this is Chris Evans as Cap and the Hulk switch. Now don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like Mark Ruffalo. It's just that when you go from an awesome performance from Ed Norton and that gets taken away it tends to rub this fan the wrong way. Norton just comes off as and can just personify badass. These days Bruce Banner is much more of a hard ass than he was back in the day and Ruffalo just doesn't scream BE SCARED OF ME! Maybe he'll surprise me, who knows? It's a moot point now but it's still in issue in the eyes of this fan. My other issue is that of Chris Evans as Captain America. As an actor I'll give him his credence, he's done great work. As Captain America I won't. He in no way exemplifies what Captain America is. That being a hardcore American patriot and soldier. Having to convince myself he's Steve Rogers seems like casting flubbed up on this one. Mind you the movie is due to be out this month and he could very well surprise us all.

Now as for the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D that is a different story. Having already made a cameo in Thor, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye is a great casting choice. He's a fantastic actor who to me has already proven himself in The Hurt Locker, and The Town. Scarlett Johansson, I've loved her in every movie I've seen her in. Nick Fury Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. being played by non other that Sam Jackson himself is just perfect, not a single complaint whatsoever there.

Now word on the geektree is that The Skrulls will be one of the villains in the movie. All I have to say to that is thank Cthulhu! I was worried before I heard this that the villain might just be Loki or Red Skull. Loki will be involved heavily but the Skrulls will be the ultimate threat. Need a force powerful enough to require a gathering of superpowers? Let's use the entire Skrull Empire. That's right...empire. Rumored plot goes like this, Loki angered by his defeat at the hands of Thor uses the Cosmic Cube to summon the Skrulls. He attempts to use the Skrulls to defeat his brother and take control of Asgard. If your not familiar with the Skrulls here's a quick run though:

“Millions of years ago, the Celestials performed genetic experiments on the reptilian ancestors of the Skrulls, resulting in three branches of Skrulls that eventually warred with one another. The Deviant branch — possessing the innate ability to shapeshift — were triumphant, and afterward wiped out all members of the other two races until only two were left: the Skrull Eternal, Kly’bn and Prime Skrull of the original Skrull race. Kly’bn implored them to spare his life, as killing him would kill part of their heritage. The Deviants’ leader, Sl’gur’t, fell in love with him, with the two eventually becoming the gods of the Skrull pantheon. As Kly’bn could not change, Sl’gurt vowed to never keep the same shape for too long. Prime Skrull escaped to Earth in the 20th Century and later became a member of the Underground Legion. From that point, the Skrulls began to expand their territory. The Deviant branch later split into two more groups, the modern Skrulls and an anomaly called the Dire Wraiths, a parasitic race that could still shapeshift and had use of magic, but were not as technologically advanced as the Skrulls.

The modern Skrulls originate from the planet of Skrullos, in the Drox System in the Andromeda galaxy, and were originally a mercantile civilization, primarily interested in free trade and willing to share their technology with all races they deemed worthy. When they encountered a new race, they simply transformed themselves to resemble that race. The Skrull empire that resulted from these contacts was based on free trade and mutual cooperation. The empire is controlled by an Emperor and each of the 978 worlds is controlled by a Governor.“ - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skrull

The Skrulls have been a threat to the Marvel Universe since 1962 in an issue of Fantastic Four #2. The Fantastic Four being the team who are most familiar with fighting the Skrulls will not appear in the movie. Although rumor has it that Super Skrull will make an appearance. Super Skrull is a Skrull that has the powers of all four of the Fantastic Four. How that will be explained is a good question. More than likely a quick reference to the FF, or even no explanation which is not unlikely. The most recent Skrull threat was the Secret Invasion in 2008. Which was a comic book crossover storyline that ran through a self-titled eight issue limited series. An amazing storyline I think you should pick up. If you follow these movies and want some insight into the Skrulls, Secret Invasion is highly recommended.

So how is The Hulk involved in the movie if he's not the antagonist? Good question guy I just made up. I believe Hulk will be The Avengers first mission, but a small one until the Skrull show up. Which is when I believe The Hulk will switch gears and help take them out. Basic premise which they've done over and over...and over. At this stage I'm okay with that, because it's gonna look damn awesome.

So as of now we have one more movie, that being Captain America: The First Avenger before we move on to The Avengers in summer 2012. We've gone through 2 Iron Man movies, 1 being the better of the 2. A Hulk movie that Mark Ruffalo wasn't in that was excellent. Thor that was sub-par at best. It had it's moments but overall wasn't what I hoped for. I'm putting a lot of faith in the Cap movie. From recent trailers I believe it will surprise me and others as well. Getting past Chris Evans will be the only hurdle. We'll see soon enough how big that hurdle is.

I've given some of my opinions and insight into The Avengers movie. Now I want to know your opinions. Do you think those chairs above deserve to be filled by the actors portraying them? If not how would you cast these iconic characters? What issues did you have with the movies out so far, if any? Do you think The Avengers will live up to expectations or kill our childhood dreams?

The Avengers releases May 4th 2012, don't hold your breath.

Maybe if Norton wasn't such a self serving prick then he would still be Banner.

but he doesn't give a damn. He just wants the world handed to him on any movie he's in, and if he doesn't get it, then this is the kind of thing that happens.

[frick] Norton, welcome Ruffalo!

The Skrulls haven't been confirmed... or denied if I'm correct. And, I've NEVER heard the rumor about Super Skrull

Mark Ruffawhatever??? Show a bit of respect VenomBA. The guys definitely on the up and up, very well respected in the industry and has worked very, very hard to earn this role. I personally think he will be the best Banner since Bill Bixby did the TV series, as he naturally has that sense of vulnerability (which Bana definitely didn't have, and that Norton had too much of), coupled with a real edge (and not to mention he looks just like Bruce should look). I'm really looking forward to the moment he first loses it in the movie, lab coat and struggling around his lab. PLEASE PLEASE GO FOR WHITE LENSES NOT GREEN CGI!!

And as for saying The Incredible Hulk was an excellent movie? Marvel has yet to make an excellent movie. Iron Man was very good, and both TIH and Thor were enjoyable, but nothing excellent SO FAR (come on Cap!)

The Avengers is definitely going to benefit from having a bunch of lead characters - no bit players for 90 minutes, no Sam Rockwell, Jane Foster, Pepper Potts types - the leads from other movies sharing screen time together should be very interesting stuff. Plus, they are all fantastic actors, and then consider that Sam Jackson is going to get a whole lot more screen time and kind of be the boss man of this movie definitely wets the appetite.

in all fairness, everytime he mentions the skrulls, he does say its rumored.

@ Corndog: I know, I just was noting that it is possible the Skulls being in the movie are more truth than rumor. Though, I've never heard the Super Skrull rumor.

This sounds like fanboy whining...They are making an avengers movie!...Let that thought marinate in your head for a little bit....who'd ever thought that they would make an Avengers movie?...you are whining and complaining about the cast, Ruffalo is a great actor and I believe he is more than capable of filling Bruce Banner's shoes

@yossarian: I understand you don't care my views on Mark Ruffalo, and as I said in the article I clearly said it was a moot point. Meaning I know there's nothing that can be done so I do "move on." As far as Cap/Chris Evans goes every other actor in the movie at least has something that shows they were right in casting them. Be it Robert Downey Jr. being ideal for Tony Stark due to his personality and overall look. Chris Hemsworth is huge and blond (which isn't saying much) but he at least looks like Thor. When I look at Chris Evans I don't see Captain America, I have to convince myself to just go with it. In my opinion I shouldn't have to do that. Casting means finding someone who is naturally convincing.

Granted it COULD have been a lot worse, and I am excited to watch an Avengers movie after yearning for one for so many years. I just see certain things as being lazy and settling when it came to certain aspects of the movie.

If my opinions don't sit well with you I apologize but that's why they are my opinions. Some are a bit too harsh and I accept that.

Too soon to tell. Also, I disagree with the Thor evaluation. To me, it was sub-awesome at its worst.

I had low expectations for Thor and loved it.

I like every single casting choice they've done for this, particularly Downey, Jackson, Hemsworth and Johansson :D

Well written article. Nice work!

Shame I disagree with about 100% of it :o))

I still don't get the love for Norton. His performance in TIH just seemed so 'phoned-in' it was unbelievable.

Banner should be world weary and desperate. He should be at his lowest ebb and feel terrified of what he could become. That hundreds of innocent lives could perish because of his actions.

Did not get that from Norton - but from Ruffalo I can really see Banner coming to life.

Also I don't understand the worries about Evans. The guy can act. In fact his range has always been pretty impressive. But then I have never see Another Teen Movie or Scary Movie or whatever it was called so I don't have that stigma with him.

And your comment about Johansen was a little ungallant my friend!

Just one last moment to pimp my Avengers timeline - worth a look (and a comment to put me straight) for those interested in how all the MCU films link together.

Dude, with all due respect, I really disagree with all your complaints.

THOR - AWESOME.
Scarlett Johansson - fine
Chris Evans - absolutely nothing to suggest that he is doing a bad job and we can only really judge when the movie comes out.
Mark Ruffalo - a very good actor; we'll give him a chance.

I have no complaints at all, it felt like a very organic casting process over what, 5/6 years to get the whole team? Introducing one character at a time, slowly and cautiously. There was no rushed descisions and i'm very happy with this group.

I agree with you about Ruffalo. It's not that he's a bad actor, it's that he doesn't even look the part. He looks more ethnic or middle eastern or something. Which of course is fine, but thats not Bruce Banner. Plus, I loved Norton's performance. Anyway I do wish him the best and I hope does good. I mean, why would you want him to fail. lol. However, I do like Evans as cap now that I have seen the trailers/photos. In fact, I think he looks fantastic.(no pun intended) I think people were and are worried because of who he plays in the movies he has done. He always plays the stuck up jerk. But in reality, he seems like a pretty cool guy and it doesn't really matter that he played the human torch because that series is done and will probably be rebooted. The rest of the cast is also good, and RDJ and SLJ are just spot on.

I also think Chris H is spot on too.

I agree, and I say that it's not that I don't like Ruffalo. As far as Banner is concerned I don't see it. Despite the character Ruffalo seems to act the same with each one. He constantly looks like he has to use the bathroom, it's disheartening to say the least. I personally was more pleased with Norton. At this point there's no point in arguing hence why I stated it was a moot point. As the trailers came out Chris Evans didn't seem such an issue. I just know that it's going to take some mind adjustments to get use to him. That's really just my problem.

Ok who would you have cast as Captain America? John Krasinski from The Office, or go with LEE's man crus Arm & Hammer guy?

Chris Evans seems fine as Cap from all the trailers & tv spots I have seen.

Chris Hemsworth was great as Thor, better him than who the wrestling fans wanted and that was Triple H.

Chris Evans in Sunshine is very close to a Captain America, so if you haven't seen that, that movie should lay some of you doubts to rest. I think he may be great in this!

The only thing I don't like is that Hank and Jan aren't Avengers. I really want the original line-up.

Still, I can live with that.

The Skrulls could be pretty cool and most movie-goers can relate to it, but alien invasions are becoming so cliche. How many movies/TV shows are about that? Battle: LA, Skyline, District 9, V, Falling Skies, etc.

I'd rather it be Kang, but that can wait for one of the sequels.

Ultron would be another good choice (though the whole Man vs. Machine thing has been done to death with Terminator and Matrix).

But I don't care, I'm just pumped that my favorite comic is hitting the big screen. Unless they put Howard the Duck on the roster, I'm good with whatever they do.
Ultron8872
Ultron8872 - 7/12/2011, 10:11 PM
Also, Super Skrull wouldn't be hard to explain.

Just a Skrull with super strength, fire powers, invisibility powers, and stretching powers.

Even in a universe where the FF does not exist, those are still four very effective powers to have.

I wouldn't mind having those four powers myself. LOL!

Since there is no FF, there is no need to explain anything.

Those just happen to be the four powers that the Skrulls were able to give their best warrior.

Comic geeks like us are probably the only people who will even make the connection to the FF.

I like the casting so far. The things I had to take in to account when casting this epic are: 1) Can these actors carry a solo film in their roles? That has been proven. 2) Can these actors get along and have chemisty in their respective roles? Ive seen nothing to prove otherwise.
To me it doesnt matter if they look exactly like their comic counterparts seeing as though pencilers change small details in their appearence all the time. Chris Evans will suprise you and The Avengers will be an epic movie surpassing all other introductory movies thus far.

Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man): I don't love him as Tony Stark, I think people like his smarmy sarcastic humour so they like seeing him but he does not feel heroic imo.

Clark Gregg Agent Phil Coulsen): He has an amusing quality, no complaints.

Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow): Can't act, looks amazing, good fight scene in IM2. It is what it is.

Chris Hemsworth (Thor): Thor had some cheesy moments but I think he did a good job, plus he gets to play him larger than life so it should be all good.

Chris Evans(Captain America): Not sure, haven't seen him as Cap yet.

Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury): Jackson has gone from fear-inducing bad guy to cheeseball over the years, I don't like him much as Fury but maybe they'll flesh him out and toughen him up.

Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye): Good actor, he should be bad-ass.

Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner): Hard to say, he is a different cat. I guess we'll see, I'm sure his acting won't have much to do with the Hulk anyway.

Joss Whedon (Writer, Director): We've got a lot riding on him but I like his work so I'm confident (I think).
