Further Indications That The Skrulls And Kree Will Villainize The Avengers?

The guys over at Spinoff Online have an interesting theory that an upcoming trading card release is further proof that Marvel Studios have chosen the aliens as who The Avengers will face off against next year...

Despite some misleading and inaccurate reports that Tom Hiddleston told the audience at Kapow! Comic Con in London that he wouldn't be in The Avengers (I was there, he didn't - read CBM's full report of the Q&A HERE) it's believed by most that we'll see Loki come to blows with the superhero team. However, equally rumored are the alien baddies, the Kree and Skrulls.

Now, our friends over at Spinoff Online have a theory which they believe is yet another indication that we'll see some sort of adaptation of the classic Kree-Skrull War. Here's a brief excerpt of what they had to say. You can read more by following the link below.

And now Upper Deck has announced The Avengers: Kree-Skrull War, a 190-card set that can be assembled to tell five original comic stories centering on the classic storyline from The Avengers #89-97. As ICv2.com notes, the July set will mark the first time Marvel comics stories have been told using trading cards.

It’s not indisputable evidence, obviously, but why else would Marvel and Upper Deck release a card set based on a four-decades-old storyline if it didn’t tie into something new and marketable?

I'm not sure about you guys, but I think they might just have a point! While the Skrulls have been spotted in the Marvel Universe recently with event, "Secret Invasion", many newer fans are more than likely clueless when it comes to either alien race. (especially as the storyline took place back in the early 1970s) This could be a great starting off point for Marvel to bring the characters back into the minds of past, present and future comic book readers in preparation for The Avengers in 2012.

What do you think? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

With an all star cast which includes Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Rufallo as Bruce Banner, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, The Avengers is set to be released on May 4, 2012!

I think it will be the Skrulls because Whedon and Penn used the Ultimates as one of the sources for the script and it features those shape-shifting aliens the Chitari so...yeah.

I love the ammount of "facts" people have reported from Kapow that simply were not true (hiddleston saying he wasnt in the avengers, duncan jones saying he was due to have a meeting with fox about wolverine) its quite funny

I've been saying skrulls since the beginning!!! Oh how i love to be right!!

But this could also be because of the avengers cartoon that's going on now, because at the end of season 2,
(SPOILER)

Skrulls start to invade

It needs to be a villain that no single Avenger would be able to deal with by himself. It has to be some cosmic entity or it just wouldn't make much sense. I don't think a team-up of Loki, Red Skull and Mandarin would be good either as it would just seem too cartoony and a bit lame... IMO, of course.

SPOILERS

The after-credits scene guarantees that Loki is a villain in the Avengers. If Skrulls and the Kree are in the Avengers, then it would most likely involve Loki manipulating them to come to Earth. And since the scene involves the Cosmic Cube, it might also further prove that Skrulls are in it. I did some research on the Cube, and found out that the Skrulls were the original makers of it.

Anyone care to speculate on the possiblilty of the Infinity Gauntlet being used? It'd bee cool if it became the plot focus of a second Avengers movie if anything.

I'd love to see it. At the beginning the avengers are formed to contain the hulk menace, and after he's controlled (and banner regains control over himself, too), we come to be presented to the real threat: an alien invasion!

And I bet that if the krees are going to appear in the movie they will be convinced by the avengers to help defeat the skrulls.

Awesome!

@TyrannicalOverlord

Spoiler Alert:

Could it be, since we've seen the infinity gauntlet as a possible easter egg in thor (probably in the vault where the Niflheim's casket of ancient winters is). Just to remind that the gauntlet itself was created by Thanos, who incrusted the gems on it.

Rodimus: that's exactly what i was thinking.

If The Kree make an appearance then it's entirely possible that we could get a little original Captain Marvel action!

And even of Mar-Vell doesn't show, then there still could be some awesome Kree warriors that use similar gear.

soaponapope - 4/19/2011, 11:13 AM
i really don't think this has anything to do with the movie. i'm not saying that skrulls won't be in the movie, just that it's more likely that they are simply re-releasing cards based on a very popular story arc...

They shouldn't introduce them in the first film. They should be set up in the 2nd or even 3rd flick.

When i started writing this i initially thought the skrulls were going to be too much to pull off but i remembered the story and i think this is a WIN# now!
They're gonna have to include the guys coming together to stop the hulk in some way though....i really wanna see cap boot hulk/banner in the face at the end!
Can someone remind me...do the skrulls attack first then hulk goes crazy or the other way round...could read the comic but hey thats what this site is for right? Hook me up

I know that this movie is chock full of stuff already but i hope that we get some taste of Hank Pym so that in the next one he builds Ultron. The A.I. goes wrong and then the avengers assemble again. Eventually leading to the creation of Vision. And by then the CGI should be updated enough for Giant-Man not to look like Gullivers Travels.

ROBBEATZZZ - 4/19/2011, 11:44 AM
I JUST FEEL FOR IT 2 BE A AVENGER INITIATIVE FORMED BY FURY..IT HAS TO BE A HUGE THREAT..THE 1ST TIME FURY MENTIONED TO STARK ABOUT THIS..LOKI AND THOR EVENTS HASNT HAPPENED..SO WE HAVE TO THINK OUT OF THE BOX ABOUT WHY HE IS TRACKING BANNER..TRYING 2 HELP STARK..AND STRICTLY MONITORING ANY SUPERHUMAN AND STRANGE ACTIVITY..WHETHER ITS A THREAT OR SOMEONE HE CAN BENIFIT FROM..
ManThing
ManThing - 4/19/2011, 11:46 AM
This is the damn KING of all movies, son!!

Hey they could do all of the above OR do some in one movie and save some for later movies.

Either way there's more classic Marvel here than you can shake a stick aT!!! BOOYA!
ROBBEATZZZ
ROBBEATZZZ - 4/19/2011, 11:49 AM
@WellDrawn THATS VERY POSSIBLE SPECULATION AND I WOULDN'T BE THAT SURPRISED
Rodimus9
Rodimus9 - 4/19/2011, 11:55 AM
They're gonna spend the whole movie developing relationships between everyone, probably with little skirmishes against homegrown badies and just when u thought none of these heroes can work together the worst possible scenario! The Hulk!! Then an after credits scene showing skrull ships headed for earth.

TyrannicalOverlord
TyrannicalOverlord - 4/19/2011, 11:57 AM

If they play it right they can build on the skrulls paranoia and make it reminiscent of "They Live" in the sense of who's an alien and who isn't either way its gonna be epic
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 4/19/2011, 12:10 PM
Based on the contracts of the stars of the Avengers, it will most likely be a trilogy, so I see no challenge with the Skulls and Kree as being the villains. Makes sense.
